T76 asked me to re-post this here, I alwys do the bidding of nice people, so here it is; For real - you can do this yourself girls, and run it all from a cybercafé.

Domain: $8/year
Anonymous Domain: $20

http://godaddy.com

Website hosting: $100/year http://superb.net

Photography: $400 - four hour sesion (PM me - I'll give you the name of a photographer I know who is great at this stuff)

Graphic Design for photo touch-ups: $35/hr (PM me for the name of a very talented designer who can handle pretty much anything, and who is extremely experienced)

Website design: Plenty of free applications for Mac and Windows where you can use templtes - or use pages.google.com if you want something quick and dirty.

Email: use your domain thru godaddy, set accounts up to point to gmail.com

Advice from me on how to do all this: $50/hour, one hour minimum. PM me but I'm busy so this really isn't a solicitation for business. I don't need it or want it.

It depends on how professional you want it to look. Try www.1and1.com
They claim that you can do it all yourself.

Good point - 1and1.com are also very good. Google pages have limited templates but they are easy to change, with a good eye and a little work, it really isn't hard.

Let's face it, sites with all sorts of flash animation and other garbage are not necessary. Guys want pictures, prices and a phone number. maybe some links to reviews. I could not care less about flying logos when I have a problem in my pants demanding attention. In fact, website design that gets in the way just makes me move onto another agency.

What I want

Is a web site that display on a my blackberry - skip the flash and keep it simple.

Also avoid putting buttons as part of graphic images - doesn't play with BB either.

be careful to make sure whoever is doing your web hosting allows for adult content or they will shut you down...

This is a time where it is important to read your agreement!

I would highly recommend spending the extra buck$ and getting the anonymous domain. I have found quite a few sites, both indy and agency, where the operators name and address are available.

As for registrars and hosts, I use Network Solutions. A bit more expensive than what is listed above (about 150$ US a year for both the domain and the hosting) and they have an easy site builder with a large choice of templates.

Thank You YVO,

I was wondering if this could be done without having any connection to ones home internet service or connection. Is it possible for a homeless guy to own and operate a website using a laptop only.

And what would the basic software needs be before pursuing the gaol of making ones own basic website.

HarmonyNYC, the system you have is not going to be the host of the website. You can access and modify your site from any system at any time, you could even do everything from an internet cafe without owning a system at all.

Many web hosting companies will provide you with the tools you need to build a basic site. There are also a number of shareware and freeware programs available. Check here for a list of some as well as links to download them:

One thing that no one has mentioned...when registering your domain through a hosting company, make certain that the domain is registered in your own name and that you have the right to move it to another host if desired. Some low end hosting companies can be a tad unscrupulous and may register the domain in their own name and charge you a fee to take full ownership.

I have a plan? Let me know if it is a good one or not?

I've told a friend of mine that we will get together this Sunday to watch the NFL and to take the afternoon to build a website with a modest erotic theme (some nude girls but no porn). Please let me know if I've got this correct or not.

I am taking from this thread that all I will need is:

- an internet connection
- my Apple MacBookPro1,1 laptop (OS X version 10.4.6, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM)
- a credit card
- and time and patience (dealing with any frustrations involved)

Should I:

- hold off till Monday, rather then doing it on a weekend?
- register my website now or do it at the time I have set for building the website?
- go with bigdaddy, 1and1. Network Solutions, or other... and what is the difference?
- ask more questions I have not yet asked?

Thanks!

p.s. regarding "shareware"... I am too afraid to dabble in that and I figure it is not needed, so any advise should not include "shareware" suggestions.

Ummm, there's nothing to worry about with shareware. It's not pirated software, it's legal programs that either have some features disabled or they are time limited versions of the full program. This gives you the opportunity to test out a program before spending the money to buy it.

Now, before you commit yourself to any hosting company, make damn sure that they have no problems with erotic content. Many regular hosting companies prohibit any such content. If that's what you want to put up, I would advise you look for an adult hosting company such as this one... http://www.nakedhosting.com/

This site could also prove useful to you... http://www.theadultwebmaster.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=tawindex

Have fun!

How about these guys for hosting (great package deals).

So I have a friend of a friend who has told me he just discovered this:

http://www.lunarpages.com/solutions.php

He say's they have great package deals for great prices. Deal's that include many e.mail addresses and large storage space, all at half the price as godaddy.com.

But, I am afraid to go with them because I've never heard of them. I don't want any "fly-by-night" operations who may be gone in a year or so or who may be less then reputable (like Techman warned about).

I'll see if I can find anything more about them over the weekend and then decide if I am going to go with them.

The easiest and cheapest thing to do is sign up for a gmail account, then go to pages.google.com and use their pre-fab system, and yes, you can do it from anywhere, without software except Firefox
