I'm going to be in Montreal in a few weeks to check out the scene. However, I won't have my computer with me to check MERB, MERC, etc. Is there an Internet cafe where I can do so in downtown Montreal? Any in Laval, Brossard, etc.? Thanks.

Not sure of the name but there is a Cyber/Internet Cafe on du Fort. I believe it is located right across the Hotel du Fort (or another hotel on du Fort).

The Internet Cafe is between Rene Levesque and Ste-Catherine and you can't miss it.

It's another Battle Net, and it is open 24/7 just like the one on Parc.

One thing to consider:

What is the policy on porn at these places?

The average bystander won't know what MERB is, and just assume you'll be looking at porn. Or the average person sees that you're looking at escort sites, and the average person thinks prostitution is illegal.

If someone complains, you could be tossed out of such place, or even worse, draw unwanted attention to whatever sites you were surfing.

While I know this would happen at a public library, it might also occur at a private internet cafe.

I've not looked at anything risque in an Internet cafe. I know that Canada (and especially Montreal) are more liberal and has less prudes than the US, but for something risky like that, I can't help but worry about busybodies.

If I were you, I would make it a top priority to have laptop and internet access in private.

It's true ... public places are not good for surfing.

I usually use them to check my e-mails & verify meeting times/places.

And what kind of wine I should get ;-)

Right on Maissoneuve & Montagne there's a "Couche Tarde" convenience store with a cafe attached (forget the name of the cafe at the moment) but they have internet access via a usage card you buy for 15/30/60 minutes. There's a few of these places around town, too. They all have the same deal so you can log in using your card say by the Old Port area or downtown as well.

That seems to be the most convenient. But it's like a Starbuck's kind of place so privacy is slim to none. Just read e-mails.

In the same Crescent St. area there's alot more Internet places that are really more geared to college students (Concordia/McGill/etc.) where you pay by the minute. Generally located more west (south) of Crescent.

Again privacy depends on how many people are around.

Be prepared for the possibility that these sites will be blocked. When I was in TO and a internet cafe close to eaten center Terb was blocked and I didnt have the bulls to ask them why, but someone told me the place had to block the site as it had problems with some users, you can imagine.

BJB,

This is not a realistic concern. We are talking about Canada, not the USA. I have used both Battle Nets as well as the Stanley Cyber Cafe referenced earlier in the the thread to surf MERB and other escort boards for probably hundreds of hours as I don't use a laptop. Hundreds of hours! Never had a problem. Nobody cares! The two Battle Nets on Parc and Du Fort are run by Asians and they are mainly preoccupied with keeping the place clean. In the winter the floors are mopped constantly, the Asian girl walks by with mop and she can see what everyone is viewing on their computer. She doesn't care and it is not her job to care.

The Stanley Cybercafe is run by a Turkish family I believe, and there seems to be a few Arabic types going there. I have seen a guy viewing what looked like an al Qaeda site. If I complained about that do you think they would care? No chance..............they would probably slap me in the face and kick me out. Bottom line, in Montreal, people don't care about these issues.

A much bigger problem than someone viewing MERB is what is going on at the Parc Battle Net with the video war games. There is a group of young Anglo Canadian guys who go in there and play video war games and they are VERY loud. These guys are really getting into the game, and one guy in particular who is always there, when these fictitious action figures do not cover him, he yells (or I should say screams) "Cover Me!!!!! Cover me you fucking hosers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" It's very annoying to me and all the other customers. But nobody ever says anything to this guy, who is there all the time. If the Asian guy who runs the place ever came over to me - a well behaved and bespectacled guy who quietly performs his scholarly research on MERB - and asked me to leave, without asking that other idiot to leave also, I would punch him in the face.

It's ridiculous to compare these places to libraries. People don't play screaming war games in libraries.

By the ways, these Asian owned Battle Nets are selling an Asian Aloe Vera beverage in their cooler which is excellent. It is like an Aloe Vera juice, and it is bottled somewhere in Asia. It's quite tasty and filling.

Also, one time a few years ago I was at the Parc Battle Net and another guy saw me and the guy who used to post as Stripper Lover surfing on MERB on adjacent computers. It turned out this guy was also surfing MERB and wanted to know who we were. SL and I told him we were lurkers, LOL.

Finally, if they did not want you viewing sites like MERB at these Cybercafes, they could block access to the websites. But they don't. Blocking access is exactly what they do at US libraries (I have been unable to access MERB at my local library), just another reason why you are comparing apples and oranges.

Any privately owned internet access does not care one way or the other what you watch.

Public institutions such as libraries, public access venues in small communities,
schools, etc are very strict since they simply do not wish to become part of a political debate or agenda.

MERB and MERC are not blocked at any of the Battlenets or at the Stanley Cybercafe. As Eastender mentioned, these are private for-profit businesses, and they do not give 2 shits about what you are surfing, so long as you stay on line. They don't care about your politics, they don't care about your sexual preferences, and they don't care if you pretend that you are an al Qaeda terrorist blowing things up while playing war games online. All they care about is you staying online and doing whatever you must do so that they can make their $3.50 or $4.00 an hour off of you. I have spent many hundreds of hours in these places surfing escort related websites, and never had a problem except with noise from kids playing video war games. My own observations are that nobody cares what you are viewing online.

BTW the Stanley Cybercafe offers 3 hours for $10, you get a card and there is no expiration date on your username and password. There is no AC in there, but a fan keeps things cool as it is at basement level. They have about 15-20 monitors. The Battle Nets are much bigger and have more computers.

There is also one machine at the Cafe Depot on the northeast corner of de Maissoneuve and rue de la Montagne, catty corner across the street from Wanda's and the Hotel de la Montagne. I believe it is about $5 an hour there. But at least you can get some good coffee to keep you going. No blockage of any escort websites there either.

Some posters in this thread are posting speculative fiction. I suspect none of them have actually ever been in any of these places.

That Turkish Family who runs Stanley Cyber Cafe have been nice to me whenever I went to check my e-mail. If you sit in back, maybe no one will notice, Its next to the peel metro entrance. Also not so much downtown, on Rue St. Denis, is netopia, a couple blocks north of the Beri-UQAM metro..( and a few doors south of a decent strip club who's name escapes me...(maybe XXX? or Exxxstacy...something with an "x" in it). The computer stations are arranged in such a way that you'll get a little more privacy there.

Yes, it is Avenue du Parc (referring to the Mount Royal park). It goes from Sherbrooke St up to Jean Talon St. Battle Net is just a few blocks north of Sherbrooke St, on the eastern side of the street.

It should be noted that south of Sherbrooke, Parc is called "Bleury", even though it is the same street and nothing changes except that it intersects Sherbrooke as it goes north. So if you are walking around on St. Catherine and looking for Parc to intersect it, it doesn't. Look for "Bleury". It's the same street.

Guys, there's nothing illegal about reading MERB or any escort site, for that matter.
If you are concerned about the guy next to you, you can always disable the pictures in your browser and then you are left with text only and no one will know you are reading about who you'Re gonna fuck next...

Being a guy who likes to get as far away from his computer as he can, I still had the urge to read up on MERB at a Bell Internet Kiosk on St. Catherines.
One word: Forget it! Okay, that is two words, but my experience was a total waste of time and $. They don't allow access to MERB...yet Bell is one of the largest distributors of porn in Canada.

There is a cyber cafe on St. Denis between St. Catherine and Sherbrooke. It's open 24 hours, run by a bunch of Koreans.

Ah, I don't think you have to worry about looking at porn sites from internet cafe. If you do that in the public library, like in the big one near Berri Uqam, they would tell you to stop. But that's abou it.

At the corner of St. Catherine and Guy Street....

there is a small place called PC Globe or something like that which is open to 6 p.m. some nites and 8 p.m. other nights, although I cannot remember which nights it closes at which times. they have 3 computers you can access the internet quite easily. I only went there for business purposes, not to check out SP web sites like MERB or anything. I guess I would have been a bit concrened too if somebody had looked over my shoulder if I had been reading the MERB site. Guy street is near Crescent street, is about the nearest point of reference I can give.

also, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Select in chinatown, and while not overly thrilled with the hotel, the computer works pretty well. I did check out MERB there several times, without too much problem, although again was a little nervous about who would be walking by looking over my shoulder.

Hope this helps. I have not forgotten about my SP reviews, which I still have to do. They will be regarding Katarina fo Satin Dreamz, Honey of eleganza, and Jessy of Girls on Fire. sorry about the deleteriousness, but it is just that I tend to become overwhelmed by other events sometimes.
