Eliminating prostitution: a waste of time

Don't they realize that the world's oldest profession has been among us for nearly 3 milleniums??

I can't believe there are still some people out there that think prostitution can be eliminated. It will be among us for centuries and centuries after we are gone.

It's the same thing with people that think we can eliminate illicit drugs. It will never happen! Especially not in a society such as ours. The other day, i was reading an article in Maclean's. The reporter had interviewed several Iranian teenagers and young adults in Iran. Most said that the West would be shocked if they found out how open their society actually is. They go to the same type of discos most of us go to, they love to dance and listen to rock/pop music, and many use Ecxtasy when they are out partying. Yes, in Iran! However, theirs and our governments do not want us to find out about how open their culture actually is. They'd rather wants us to believe that they are all strict followers of Islamic Law and live in a repressed society, with no rights whatsoever.

The point i don't like about their argument is they associate prostitution with rape and violence. All the customers are not violent cromagnon male with no brain. As i can see in this board, most of merbites has quite some class.
Of course the prostitute has to deal with some violent man by the nature of their job. But if we legalize prostitution, maybe we can more protect them.
Eliminating prostitution is not going to resolve the problem about violence against women. I believe probably, it's going to have an opposite effect.
When i am talking prostitution, i talk about a girl who decide voluntarily to work this way. I think everybody should thank them for the good work they do. I am sure the humanity will go worse without them.

I have the feeling some of you have a rather idealized view of prostitution outside the HDH market...

    Cargo:
Most of merbites may have some class, but I'm not sure they are representative of they average customer around the world.
They're living in relatively rich and peaceful countries, and the most frequent contributors seem to have both decent income and education. I've seen first hand the work (and life) conditions of some EE SW in a French city, it was downright revolting.
However, I agree with you that legalizing and 'normalizing' (making it a more respectable job) may improve the situation than outlawing and making it taboo.

    EB:
"I think that the women who are advancing these points of view are radical feminists who represent the extreme fringe of the political left." "I also think that most of these women are lesbians"
Are you sure you're not falling into the same kind of extremist clichés they are?

    Hi o.o.b.e.,

I've seen first hand the work (and life) conditions of some EE SW in a French city, it was downright revolting.
That's why i mention the girl who voluntarily do this job. I don't agree about the girls who are forced to work as a prostitute like the EE SW. The guys behind the EE SW take advantage to the non legalize situation that surrounded that job.
