Woman tased by police officer. Is she REALLY a victim?

Did the cop do the right thing or did he used too much force?

So this is the full story about the lady that got tased by the cops on cnn's website; http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/26/tasered.woman/index.html .

I read this previously, about a week ago, and then saw it in the news again today, and read today's news, and I find it just too god damn ridiculous. So ridiculous that I had to make a post on MERB something completely irrelevant to this forum and give my opinion.

This lady is CLEARLY NOT a victim! I don't understand why so many people are so interested in her case that she has to get so much publicity and gets to go on national tv saying how she was a victim of this cop and how the cop overused his power and should not have tasered her so many times etc etc etc....

1. Had she not been in that bar DRUNK and shown disorderly conduct.. and throw an object at the barperson... the cop would have never been called or had to show up at that bar.

2. Had she not tried to run away from the cop and go into someone else's car, the cop would have never had to tased her. Did I mention during this whole time she was drunk and disturbing the peace?

3. Had she just co-operated and gone with the cop to his car, she would have NEVER been tased.

4. Had she not kept being so bewildered and crazy and DRUNK and just listened to the cop and obey his orders, she would not have kept on being tased.

5. Had she not KICKED OUT the window from the police cruiser.... she would NOT have been tased also.

6. If she was to co-operate while going to the other police cruiser and not acted like a lunatic and tried to run away again, she would not have been tased AGAIN!

Point being, DON'T BE A DRUNKASS, DON'T TRY TO RUN AWAY FROM THE COPS, DON'T KICK OUT THEIR PATROL CAR WINDOWS, AND DON'T TRY TO RUN AWAY.....AGAIN!!!.... and he won't have to pull out the taser on you....

I mean, in all honestly, we all "hate" cops/pigs, whatever you want to call them. But the reason we hate them is because they got us doing stuff we shouldn't be doing, speeding/uturns on solids lines/running a yellow etc... and i'm sure there are a fair share of stories out there where police officers have REALLY gone over their power... but overall... they are here to try to protect us. I mean, this is coming from a guy that probably has 15 points off his driver's license that needs to be defended by his lawyer or else he'll lose his license... but nevertheless... I STRONGLY believe cops are there to help us and protect us...

Can you imagine and picture living in a city/country where there are no cops, and it is run by thugs and terrorists or whatever othey crap there are out there to worry about? We don't have to think/worry about that picture because we have police officers everyday risking their lives to try to protect innocent people that are not out there to cause trouble.

When was the last time you saw a normal person crossing the street minding his own business get smacked down by a cop? Never, at least not to my knowledge. How often have you seen a thug or a bunch of kids try to rob/jack that normal person crossing the street minding his own business? If it were not for the cops being around, there'd probably be a lot more of these senseless acts of violence from people.

All in all, I hate it when I get a ticket from a cop. But in the end, when it comes to real serious and violent situations where a normal person like you and I would run away from the scene, that is the first place where you'll find cops. They'll go in and risk their lives, to try and help protect the innocent people around. This cop that tasered the woman, GOOD JOB to you! If i were him, i'd do the exact same thing. I don't know what she has on her, and if she has any weapons or sharp objects. I have a family and kids to go home to, I risk my life to protect innocent victims, but I would not risk endangering my own life or the welfare of my family over a drunkass of a lady that is causing so much ruckus!

Unfortunately, this cop is on paid leave, and this lady is on national television telling "her story" of how scared and what a victim she was... unbelieveable.. shit like that just makes you think that being the good guy is really not worth it sometimes... he's taking all this heat for only doing his job properly...

Please give your opinions as well.

Are you... serious? If you were in the cops' shoe... you would try to grab her and put her down while she was intoxicated and not knowing if she had any weapons or any sharp objects on her? So you would risk your own neck and your family's neck by approaching a woman where you have no idea if she has a weapon or not, just so you don't tase her? You would be a GREAT cop... one that would probably not last for more than a few months until you encounter a situation where you use your same mentality and use too little force to subdue the "criminal" and he/she will actually have a weapon on him/her and end you right there.

But lets say you did subdue her without using a taser... then she will sue you for "molesting" her and touching her in ways that are inappropriate or whatever other interesting things her lawyer can come up with...

If I was the cop, i'd think about MY safety first, NOT someone who's drunk and being disorderly. I am the person that is doing MY JOB and doing a favour to the people around by taking HER away. SHE is the one thats causing all these problems and this situation, NOT ME. Why should I risk my own skin in getting cut or whatever by her, when I can just put her down with a taser?

Normal people after getting tased, will calm down and know to relax the fuck a bit or else they will get tased again. But her being as smart as she was, keeps fighting and keeps breaking shit and keeps trying to run away from the authority. The cop is authorized to use necessary force to stop someone, and its not like the cop did not warn her beforehand, or tased her while she was co-operating. He tased her when she tried to fight back, run away, break a patrol car's window, and tried to run away again.

So where on earth in those scenarios was she EVER in the "right" and why would anyone have sympathy for the instigator?

And you're right. The cop IS fully armed. With a gun, baton, pepper spray, and a taser. Had he used a gun, then he would have been whack. Had he used a baton, that would have broken some shit or whatnot. Had he used a pepper spray, he would have "hurt her eyes" and been sued also. So he decides to use a taser, which he is AUTHORIZED to use by the law, and he still gets heat for it...

Why give him all those stuff if you don't expect him to use any of it? He is given all of those things so that he can subdue a "criminal" without having to go to close range of them to avoid themselves from getting hurt unnecessarily. For each situation, you use a different weapon, in this situation, he didn't take up his gun, or his baton, or pepper spray, but opted for the taser, so why's he getting heat for doing his job?

What is up with this these days?

Is it so darned cute to ask a question if you THINK you already know the answer? I happen to agree with you MA - but you asked a question if your title, but are clearly not interested in a debate on the subject...

Just to add some more things to consider:

Police training does include many different types of restraint techniques.

IMHO: If She had been properly restrained in the first place then the taser should have not been needed or need not more than once or twice and not 6 times.

Hmm... I do THINK my answer is correct. SA made his opinion. And I voiced mine in regards to his comment. He can reply to my opinions as well if he liked. And if he makes a valid point, i'll concur, if I think I have something to respond to his point, I'll do so....If that isn't a debate.. i'm not really sure what a debate is...

Hey Ronnie,

I do agree with you here, but to restrain someone, they have to be subdued and the officer must be able to restrain you. If the person is kicking and flailing and running, it does make his job of restraining her a lot harder. If she stopped flailing and trying to run away, he would restrain her and end of story. But that wasn't the case it seems. She acted like a total mad woman and needed to be tased numerous times before she was able to be restrained. Once she was restrained and put into the police car, she decided to kick the window out and tried to run away again when the cops tried to transfer her to another police car.

They DID restrain her, up to a certain extent, but no cop ever really restains a person to the extent that they can't move any part of their body/arm/leg. She broke the window after being restrained... so she got tased again...then she tried to run away again... so she got tased again...

Obvious Questions

The following questions should be answered.

1.) Why didn't the bar cut-off the booze much earlier?

2.) Where was bar security? Granted drunk women are harder to handle, but from the published accounts nothing was done to calm the situation before calling police.

3.) What went wrong between the bar and the cop car? Suspect that the cop did not follow certain procedures.
