Okay,

baseball is about to begin the first thing I have to say is f*ck the Yankees.
I hope you go bankrupt. I feel sorry for the smaller teams like Montréal, Milwaukee, Twinkies ECT, a 200 mil salary. Baseball defiantly needs a salary cap, like football or else smaller teams will never advance to the playoffs. There are some exceptions of course (Oakland) that don’t spend a ton of money, but are always in the playoffs.

I hope A rod blows his knee out playing basketball .. Just kidding
:D
Sincerely yours
A disgruntle redsox fan

Salary caps

Well, i hate both the Yankees AND the Red Sox. Baseball would be a lot better off without these two big spenders around.

You're correct, baseball does need a salary cap, but MLB blew the chance to have one when they went ahead and signed the present collective bargaining agreement with the Player's Association. Their fault.

Hockey also needs a salary cap. Big time!

Hockey will get a salary cap of sorts in the next agreement, that is almost a given. The league has popped up with a report this past week that shows almost 300 million a year is losses. No league can support that sort of thing indefinately without there being major "victims".

The Montreal Expos and many other smaller market teams in baseball are victims of no salary cap, limited income potentials, and a playoff system that disqualifies a majority of the teams before the season is half done. It makes it almost impossible to get good enough players, to make good enough money, and to keep people in the stands for more than half the season.

I think all sports should have "anti-trust" exemption status that allows the salaries to be capped by rule, without player agreement. Without this, some dumbass in a major market, with the largest TV revenues, and with the largest pocket book will buy the championship for that league, and pretty much put everyone else out of business.

They will get a salary cap, i agree. Even if the potential lock-out has to last 2 years or so. The problem with the report, however, is that the NHLPA isn't buying any of it. They state the person who did the report was biased, since he was getting paid nearly a quarter of a million $ by the NHL. They are positive their own figures are the correct ones, and not the NHL's.

I'd even go further and state that the large majority of major league baseball teams are eliminated from winning the World Series even before the first pitch of the regular season is thrown. Heck, make that the pre-season.

Quoting the great Howard Cosell, the professional sports business in general is very, very ill.

Think about this, & answer HONESTLY, if the Red Sox had been able to acquire the services of ARod & not at the same time lost the services of Nomar, would you be saying that baseball needs a salary cap ?
\

SL I would love to have A Rod and hate to see nomar leave. I still would be in favor for salery caps though.Sports should be competive.

I totally agree with you. However, the NHL obviously wasn't certain how the outcome of the report would turn out, which is why they kept the whole thing secret.

IMHO, anytime ARod over Soriano!
Specially for NY.
Too bad they didn't land Vlad for right field.
Relievers are questionable though!!
I would take the Brewers for the series!!!!!!!!!! That would be great!!!

I agree. Look at the NFL it has been more competitive with the salary cap. Baseball needs to do 2 things to make it more competitive 1. min to max salary cap. Let’s say a team has to spend a min. of X mil and a max of Y million. These are just imaginary numbers that I invented though it can be any number. 2. Get rid of the D.H.
I want to see Roger or Pedro throw at some ones head then step in to the batters box

This is all good, healthy and fun and all of you will be glued to the TV sets when Yankees play Red Sox in the playoffs next fall so you cannot be heard to say any of this is bad for baseball. It's just the way it is.

No this rivalry is great for baseball. The ALCS was more interesting then the World Series this year. It would have been better if Grady was not there though:D

In Saturday's Globe & Mail, there was an advertisement offering for sale a big chunk of the land which was destined for the "Labatt Stadium". However, the current owner, who bought the property from the federal government after the Expos' option was allowed to expire, is only accepting offers until next Friday.

Allow me to dream for a moment that what could have been could still be ;)

Life time Yankee Fan

From the perspective of a life long Yankee fan I have to say I could not be happier about this trade. After Soriano's poor post season the NY fans will be ready to take it out on him at the first sign of weakness so it is good he gets to make a new start in Texas. ARod can only get better with the line up surrounding him, can you imagine being a pitcher and having to face that line up? If ARod playing third and Jeter at SS does not work out then Jeter will step up as team captain and volunteer to move to either 2nd or 3rd but I do not see that as being necessary. This trade will enhance every single team's revenue not only through the revenue sharing but when the Yankees come to town...you will not see many half empty stadiums when they are playing. And it won't be because people want to see them win but even more will want to see them lose (not me). Oh and to Willyapd, we'll find out about Clemens since in Houston he will have to bat...I am curious how that will affect his high inside fastball. Last thing, it is going to be a great year for MLB especially in the American League East where Baltimore really improved their team but seem destined to be also rans. Can't wait to get down to Tampa for Spring Training....see you there!

Yankees give it to the Red Sox again!!

Just heard a great phrase from David Wilbon (Pardon the Interruption) on his ESPN show, talking about the A-Rod/Soriano deal:

"George Steinbrenner is to the Red Sox what JR Ewing is to Cliff Barnes! He keeps giving it to them again and again and again!!"

Wilbon also went on to mention that a strong and great Yankee team is great for baseball. Hmmm....and i thought he was a Cubs' fan?

As for me, i cheer for both of Canada's teams, even though i know their chances of getting to the post season are remote.

Prediction

Steinbrenner hires a helicopter to fly in low over Fenway infield during a the 1st NY/Sox series. He drops bundles of cash between second and third during the Yankees first at bat. Nomar bolts from the field (cash in hand) into the NY dugout, changes uniforms and emerges as the new Yankees second baseman.

The Yankees will need to score 12 runs a game because it looks as if they'll be giving up 10.

My bona fides? Saw my first Yankees game at age 8 vs. the Washington Senators. If you sat in the lower level you left the stadium by walking around the edge of the field onto the warning track and out the center field gates.

BTW...say what you want to about Jeter's fielding. He's clutch, always around the ball for the big play, and has a feel for what's happening behind him like few in baseball have ever had. He's as pretty as Brad Pitt but works like Gene Hackman.

F*cking stats

I'm studying advanced Anatomy and Physiology and the formulas and charts aren't nearly as confounding as Regnad's stat sheets.

Here's a nice stat for you; 9 continuous years in the play-offs.

The Yankees started winning World Series when Jeter took over short from an injured Tony Fernandez in early '96. Were there other, mitigating circumstances? Of course there were. But...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Is A-Rod a better shortstop? He may very well be. Is he a better all-around athlete. He may very well be that as well. That being the case, it makes sense to put him at another position and allow his natural atlheticism to flex its muscles.

What sets Jeter apart from so many other "star" athletes is that he never once allowed himself to get bigger than the game.

OK. Back to the books.

What about A-Rod?

Do you think he went kicking and screaming to NY? Not in the least.

a) He's a local kid from the Bronx

b) He's good friends with Derek Jeter...who stood by his side at today's news conference.

c) He knows that the Yankees have a commitment to winning and deal decisively with malcontents (see the sudden departure of Raul Mondessi).

d) His best chance of getting to the World Series before he turns 40 is with the NYY. And most important....

e) He's that much closer to the SP scene in Montreal

;-)
