    Music Thread

I just discovered a wonderful kind of music today and am really excited about it. I thought it might be interesting to have a Thread for music.

I discovered FADO : Traditional Portugese music and felt like sharing this find with you. It is a very rich emotional kind of music based on the poetry of the story told with singing. It is accompanied by a Portugese Guitar which has one of the most beautiful sounds to my ears.

What are your recent musical finds??

Fado is indeed superb portuguese folksong.
Great singers of Fado: Mariza Reis Nunes, Débora Rodrigues
In that same genre (close to fado), you have the Morna: a genre of Cape Verdean music related to Portuguese fado,
You surely have heard of Cesaria Evora from Cap Verde. She has couple of Morna Songs.
My favourite artist for such kind of music is another Cape Verdean singer: Maria de Barros.

She performed in Mtl about 3,4 years ago and that was a blast!

I listen to all kind of completely opposed genre of music (from Bach, Mozart, to flamenco, to hip hop, to Celtic music,
to house, congolese rumba, Ivory Coast's Coupe décallé, Blues, rock & roll, jazz, ukrainian/greek/arabic folkloric music..you name it...really all kind). I do not have any particular recent findings, but I've been recently mainly into the following:
-The Album "Night Owls" of Vaya Con Dios (great and interesting variety of rythms + awesome strong voice from their singer)
This is quite relatively old now, but it's a personal all time favourite of mine.
-The Album "La Cantina" by Lila Downs - Another all time personal great classics. The album is great and has
a variety of interesting rythms on it as well. All albums of Lila Downs are of great interest in terms of both
the messages they carry and the rich material of mixed musics she arranges.
-Bran Van 3000: their techno infused sound really amazes me (I've been listening to them countless times.
Their album "Glee" is pure classic for the genre. I've just bought their latest album "Rosé" and I'm quite
    content with it. Really great!)
-Kitaro (My favourite for my quiet moments).

I heard Mariza "O Gente da Minha Terra" and thought it was just so incredible.

She starts crying in the middle and is really touching.

I will check out the ones you suggest and get back to you on them.

    Have a good night!

You forgot Amalia Rodrigues. No, I'm not a fan of fado as I find it a bit too lamenting. I do like the group "Madredeus", which I don't think is fado, but is of a similar style. My tastes in Portuguese music run more into Brazilian jazz.

Also check out Virginia Rodrigues. She sings in "Candomble" (not sure about the roots). She is a large woman with a powerful, beautiful, voice. The first CD you should buy is "Nos".

    Some of my favority things!

    YouTube - Jay z - Say Hello

Usually i am a purist and i listen to a lot of jazz, too much samba in fact it is never too much, classics, bossa nova but lately i decided to listen to some hip pop and guess what? I find it is sexy and deeep and cool, energizing music to face the snow and all the cold.
I love American Gangster as a record, it is the encounter of old R&B/Motel/Rap and Hip Pop i would say only a genious would make such a powerful yet funk soungs.

I agree, it is never too much. I LOVE Brazilian jazz. I have to say, though, that I have no time for hip hop - it all sounds the same to me - bada, bada, bada, bada !

Jay-Z is great music, well at least American Gangster is, and that is all i know about Jay-Z.

YouTube - Luiz Bonfá - Manhã de Carnaval

Obviously i cannot play Jay-Z during a massage so i chose the Brazilian Classics which are suave and relaxing for my massages, such as the above Luiz Bonfa.

Interesting part is that i can share Jay-Z with my school coleges, but
i dont see them enjoying brazilian classics. Some of the more funk open minded clients have danced Jay-Z with me, and that was so cool!

You just HAVE to listen to Virginia Rodrigues singing that. It is amazing done by that deep, profound voice.

Reminds me of the movie, "Donna Flor and her Two Husbands" with Sonia Braga. It starts with the end of the carnival.

I preffer more modern brazilian music, Virginia is too much old fashion.

Yes i have heard Virginia Rodrigues, her style is too conservative for my taste, i preffer something more contemporary, like this:

The name of the singer is Adriana Calcanhoto, and she write all her songs.
The name of the song is Por Essa Porta Agora.
