Buffets

I remember The Maharaja on Rene-Levesque blvd, corner Drummont (I think?) was exceptional. I went there last summer and of course planning to revisit again late April. I am a big sucker for Indian and Greek cuisines.

The Indian spicy stuff at The Maharaja just makes you want to get up and start dancing!!!

Don't know of any Greek buffet in Montreal or for that matter anywhere else, are there any?

protagoras... by the way you are responsible for Plato's quest for the search for transcendent forms or knowledge which could somehow anchor moral judgment.... may I have the address of Casa Corfou please ? Can't wait to get stuffed with dolmades, BBQ lamb legs and saganaki!!!

Al Mahrajah is the best indian buffet (their commercial is claiming that, and IMHO it is true). The buffet is at the corner of Rene Leveque and Guy st. Casa corfu is the best international buffet, and is definetely the best when it comes to desert :). Le commencal is a vegetrarian buffet. There many locations : st catherine st (probably the nicest one), st Denis, Cote des Neiges...

Chinese buffets

There use to be a lot of chinese buffets in the Montreal area. Which ones are good these days? I can just go to a chinese buffet and sit and eat just egg rolls and won ton soup all day. (I was told that these are not realy authentic, but who cares I love the stuff!)

There is a chinese buffet on China town. It looks very nice from outside, but it is really dirty (though always packed !). You can find chinese food there, but you can also have some authentic chinese pizza ;)

The buffet at the casino Montreal is the one of the worste casino buffets ever. I've eaten at literally every single vegas strip buffet, 50% of the downtown buffets, all the Atlantic city buffets, and even some indian casino buffets, including foxwoods and mohegan sun. By far, the casino de Montreal buffet was the worste in terms of taste of food, availability of selection, and time of wait in line. PUKE!

Dr. Torpedo,

The Montreal Casino could also have the worst odds of any of the casinos you've mentioned.

When I'm not eating Filet-O-Fish, I enjoy going to Chinese buffets. The big one in Chinatown is called the Poon Kai-Jardin de Jade, and it is indeed always busy. The good thing about this is that freshly cooked food is always being brought out to keep the trays full. This is an important consideration because friends of my brother got sick once having a buffet supper at the old Nanking (RiP), and we suspect it was due to food being left out too long from lunchtime. The PK-JdJ being bigger than most restaurants, there is a wider selection and a greater variety of dishes, including one counter of vegetarian cuisine. Towards the front there is a row of platters of stuff freshly chopped up from the meat counter, which people often overlook because it is away from the rest of the food. They also have a lower price during the mid-afternoon if you're having a late lunch (or very early supper).

There is nothing particularly Chinese about the pizza, other than the fact that someone Chinese likely prepared it. As such, it is a poor imitation of what one normally expects.

Another big buffet is the Kim Foo on St. Antoine Street, southwest of Place Bonaventure. When I walked by in January, it looked like they were doing renovations or had scaled back hours temporarily. When it first opened, it was quite good in terms of the number and variety of dishes, but more recently doesn't seem to be as busy as it once was. I'm told though that it does well when ever there's something going on at the Bell Centre, which is only a couple of blocks to the west.

A variation of the buffet concept can be found in a couple of Szechuan restaurants, but unfortunately the only one I know of in the downtown area closed awhile ago (I think the name was Flamingo, north side of St. Catherine near St. Mathieu). You pay a fixed price for the meal and order off a menu of single servings, and they'll keep bringing out the plates as long as you can eat. The price is higher than for the Cantonese style places, but the food is hot, individually served and not picked over by others from a common tray.

Captain, if your preference is to pig out on egg rolls and won ton soup, it doesn't really matter where you go. Although the Mandarin (formerly on Stanley, now a Szechuan (?) place) was in a class of its own for the quality of the food, there was nothing special about their egg rolls or soup. You could do equally well at the Poon Kai or Kim Foo.

Buffet at strip clubs.

I do not know if there are any strip clubs that offer a free buffet like they did years ago. A word of warning if you are offered a free buffet at a strip club, I would suggest that you decline the offer. These places wheel out a buffet one day, and what is not eaten today will be served tommorow. Have you notice how the chicken wings are realy spiced up at some places? Could it be they are tryinmg to mask the odor of decomposing chicken?

Have you had the real Dim SUM or the factory type?

I have been told that the Dim SUM that they serve at the buffets are made in factories (like they make McCain Pizzas) I like to go for the real stuff that they serve to you on a passing cart. I have also been told that realDim Sum is served only before noon. (that is the tradition)
