Besides movie stars, fashion supermodals have certainly greatly influenced the woman body criteria. This is one of the many websites where you can find a short biography along with a series of classic pics of some of the best known models:

Cindy Crawford, Elle MacPherson and Linda Evangelista in their prime would certainly qualify, under my criteria, among the most gorgeous women of our era...

I think that facially, women today are just as beautiful as previous eras.

I like the hairstyles and clothing of the 40s better. Back when women actually dressed like women (skirts, nylons, and heels, and NOT low riders and flip-flops  ).

There has been a noticeable thinning of the bodies. Not that women in the 40s were BBW, but they weren't stick figures either. 10-20 pounds extra was used to fill out their figures better.

For example, I like slightly muscular yet feminine legs that require some meat. Not "cankles" and not "pegs" either.

Substitute Heidi for Linda and I'd agree with you.

Heidi has certainly an interesting set of "criteria"...but while she would definitely make my Top 10, I'm keeping Linda in my Top 3. ;)

sorry Tex, I think this little homegrown hottie beats Pam in many categories (like say, talent, class, looks, etc)

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1431940/

(be honest, if Pam had never glued on those canons of hers, would we still be talking about her over 10 years later?)

Hello all,

I think my boy Brady has a great eye for women as well as on the field.

Whew,

PS

Shijak...anyone can glue on some great guns. But Pam does have that unique beauty that is eternal. Yes, we would still be talking about her.

Ok...how about a young Kathy Ireland then :D if it must be a brunette.

I like gorgeous blondes but I do have a natural inclination towards brunettes...after all, we marry them, don't we?

Strangely, I much prefer Kathy Ireland now, in her mid-forties, than when she was younger. Hard to say why, something about her face which is more "in harmony" with her stunning body these days than ever before.

But Kathy is definitely someone I would have considered, at any age, for a good "workout". :p Not sure she would have considered me, though...:(

One of the principal elements of beauty is health; with modern day medicine, dentistry and knowledge of nutrition and the benefits of exercise; with the lack of a hard life as was known historically in many parts of the world (life expectancy 35 yrs); with the makeup available and cosmetic surgery possible; with the delightful unashamedly unrepressed expression of femininity in all its delights; with all this and more, the women today would put their ancestors to shame with very few exceptions. I have seen even girls who do not possess the coveted regular features of professional models and movie stars but who are glowing with health and inner beauty possess a very fetching demeanour. And they are holding onto their beauty much longer. (We have companions working long into their 50`s). We are so used to seeing this degree of beauty that it may begin to take on the aspect of the commonplace. Sorry, but those of the past from the the Mona Lisa to the tribeswoman, coarse and rough with all the teeth rotting out of their heads leave me cold. By the way, a lot of this applies to the guys also. Not being condescending here. Just calling a spade a spade. Just glad to be alive in this time.

Hello Regualr Guy,

While our era has much greater advantages than any other time in dealing with health issues it doesn`t mean we are healthy. Yes, it`s true many people look healthier and seem to stay younger looking longer. Having so much to fight disease, stave off hunger, and having better living and working conditions has contributed to all of that. However, when I hear from so many kids about all of their health problems it`s obvious that being part of the ``fattest generation in history`` has severe downsides that many will pay for later in their lives whether they seem more ``beautiful`` or not right now. Clearly, staying healthy into middle and later life has required a lot of maintenance that previous generations never had access to. Is this era better off...maybe not. We just have much better band aids along the way. The human race has not evolved, it has just developed more help. But beauty...beauty is timeless...in any era. ``Better``...is just a matter of taste and trend.

Sincerely,

Korbel

Well first off I would have to have records to compare. Are we the fattest generation in history? We do have better food sources but I for one would want to compare child mortality rates with generations past. I fear you would find a much greater disparity. Our children by and large are much healthier, notwithstanding the conerns we have with childhood obesity. Just look at children from third world countries and that will give you a rough comparison.
Is this era better off...maybe not. We just have much better band aids along the way. The human race has not evolved, it has just developed more help. But beauty...beauty is timeless...in any era. "Better"...is just a matter of taste and trend.
Of course beauty is timeless. Evolution is not the product of a few centuries but of thousands of years. I would never suggest that isn't so. But it is also true if you read my comments that life can wear one down. Health not evolution is the key here. A lifetime of heavy toil, lack of an advanced level of medicine and dentistry, proper nutrition are some of the factors which influence the general health of a population. Now you say beauty is a matter of taste and trend. To some extent I agree. But what is hard wired into our species like any other is the desire to breed and often we are geared to find attractive those qualities in others. There is a theory that men find womens' hips attractive because they indicate potential future childbearing success. In addition to that there is a certain element of aesthetics which enters into the picture. Now all that considered: Perhaps we find regular features attractive not only for aesthetic value but perhaps because we find an innate genetic quality therein. In the end analysis, common sense alone will dictate that the technological advances in living alone will show a greater degree of the population healthier and manifesting a much lesser degree of the physiological impairments which are all too obvious in populations with a less advanced standard of living.

I also like the beauties of the past.

BUT ...

I don't think it's possible to accurately judge todays women with the women of the past. There are so many environmental factors which are clouding our perception so as to render an impartial judgment impossible.

Photography: The black & white, arranged photography of the past covers up a lot. With today's ultra high resolution color photography, you see it all, including warts and love handles.

Hairstyles and clothing: Very subjective. Do you like the woman, or do you like the hair and the clothing of that particular time?

Age: Without accurate photography, how do we know what Lana Turner and Betty Grable REALLY looked like? And how can we really compare them with today's beauties?
