For those of you who live up in the winter climates I just want your opinion on parking your car indoors or outdoors. I hear that it's not good to park your car indoors because it will cause more rust to appear because it's always being thawed out campared to the car being left outdoors where it's always frozen.

Thanks

It depends Don. I'm going to assume that it is heated indoor parking, and not just a detached garage. If it is heated, then yes it will accelerate the rust process. One way to counter that is to place a garden sprinkler, at low pressure, under the car for 5-10 minutes to wash off the salt. Don't laugh. An elderly neighbour of mine did this, and kept his early 80's Oldsmobile solid for over 15 years. Don't forget the wheel wells either.

Salt only becomes ineffective after (I believe) -18c. The heat radiating from your exhaust, especially the catalytic converter, will keep it working for quite a while after you park.

Stick to outdoor with a tempo (if you're allowed to have one) if

you must use indoor its preferable that its not heated.

If only I knew...
Indoor parking, if heated, must be well ventilated to avoid rust. If you see water puddles on the ground or if the car isn't dry after being in the garage all night then, it's too humid and the car will rust. LOts of places won't ventilate enough to lower heating costs.

The garden hose trick isn't bad either. Only problem is, if water temp is too high versus the car temp (-30C weather and 15-20C water) the windshield might not survive... Also, water sipping in door locks and not drying before the car is returned to the cold will freeze, making the lock unoperable. Even worst, the seals around doors might freeze if they are still wet and the doors will be shut closed, possibly locking you inside.

Hey metoo4. You just reminded me of that old joke:

How can you tell when it's a (insert racial slur) car? It's the one with the family locked inside!....The joke's free. How good did you expect it to be?

Hey DON;

I agree with MtWallet, I have my car over 10 years now, not 1 bit of rust, and my garge is heated at 10 degrees, but the secret take 5 min and rinse it everytime you finished with it. Could seem like a pain for some, but you see I never had my car shot for rust (Oil Treatment) and it's over 10 years old, & 200K, works like a charm.
You have a choice, do this in the winter, or leave you car outside and use up the moter. 90% of your motors life is used up the first 75 sec when you start your car under -10 C. Army statistics.
And yes the salt point on your car is not -18 but -10 C.

My 2 cents.
