MD,

I don't like Stewart either. He has no class, seems very scripted and most of his humor is of the insulting variety. What is funny about announcing which actresses in attendance are pregnant, or that Angelina Jolie has adopted many needy children? He is a boob. They should fire him and bring back Billy Crystal.

Marion Cotillard looked absolutely gorgeous. I have not seen La Vie En Rose, but I will now almost certainly rent it on DVD after watching her last night.

I thought Javier Bardem gave a very classy acceptance speech.

What was the deal with the man and woman who won for best song? They brought the woman back out because "she did not have the chance to speak." Did I miss something or did she step up to the microphone and get liplocked? Or did they just cut her off?

The Coen Brothers certainly were not very talkative for two guys who had to know they were going to win something.

Regarding Johnny Depp, he is a very fine actor and it's probably only a matter of time before he wins an Academy Award. He has 3 nominations without a win already, so it won't be long.

Did anyone notice Daniel Day Lewis's kiss of George Clooney as he made his way to the podium? Lewis later commented that he kissed Clooney because "he was the nearest fellow nominee."

Acadamy Awards is almost an unwatchable show. 89% pompous baffons who think that making movies is somehow something of great importance.

To me this criticism is chiefly warranted with regard to the red carpet preliminary to the actual show, and the portion of the actual show where Jon Stewart was speaking. I thought the rest of the show (non-Stewart portion) was good. The performances of the Oscar-nominated songs were all pretty good. For the most part the acceptance speeches were good and avoided pomposity.

The older gentleman who won an honorary Oscar for production design (forgot his name) gave a particularly good and lucid acceptance speech despite his advanced age and obvious frailty. He thanked Alfred "Hitch" Hitchcock for introducing him to his wife. Which pretty much tells you how much of an old timer this guy is.

It seems like every year they give an honorary Oscar to someone who is almost dead. It seems like the attitude is, "let's honor someone before they croak." It's a bit of an odd tradition...........

I did happen to see the first nominated song sung by Amy somebody. It was absolutely brutal and the woman had a decent voice so it wasn't her fault.

It was definitely the worst of the five nominated songs. I thought the third and fifth of the nominated songs that were performed were the best. As noted above, there seemed to be a glitch with the acceptance speech of the duo that did win, resulting in the woman being brought back out after a commercial break to deliver her acceptance speech. I am not sure what happened, and I don't think that I have ever seen someone given a "second bite at the apple" to give an acceptance speech, as this woman was. She did make the most of it though.

Marion Cotillard is absolutely amazing in La vie en rose. One of the best actress performance I have seen.

But as Equanimity said, if you are mostly interested in her beauty (I agree, she is gorgeous and so charming), you will be disapointed with her in that movie.

I was hoping, without believing it really was possible, Viggo Mortensen would win best actor. He is so good in Eastern Promises. I have not seen the movie with Daniel Day Lewis but I read he's not natural at all in it and that his acting is close to what we've seen in Gangs of NY.

Regarding the woman who won the Oscar for best song (along with her male partner), Stewart decided to bring her back onto the stage out of sympathy since just before the commercial break when they won, the man spoke & then when the woman came up to the microphone to give her thanks, she was suddenly cut off by the music since they duo had extended their allowed time to speak. I heard that there was quite a commotion going on about this backstage during the commercial, so Stewart brought her back onto the stage for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Good for him.

Yes, the Coen brothers are not exactly the most talkative people of the bunch. A room full of such Coen brothers would make a very dull party. As for Johnny Depp, he's a great character-actor. I'm still not sold that he's a leading man, able to carry a big movie on his own. But he was up against the mighty Daniel Day-Lewis, who was largely favored (even by his peers) to win the Oscar (see my quote at the bottom of the post). What an actor! As for the best actor in a supporting role Oscar, it went to heavily favored spanish actor Javier Bardem, who was extraordinary in "No Country for Old Men". EB must be fluent in spanish (since he enjoyed his speech), since i barely figured out what he said since most of his speech was spoken 120 miles an hour & then in spanish. Maybe Jack (who was sitting next to him) slipped something into his drink, who knows. As for the best actress in a supporting role, i forgot her name but she plays the corporate lawyer in "Michael Clayton". Her win came as somewhat of a surprise, but what on earth was she thinking when she was chosing what to wear for the awards show? My grandmother had drapes like that in her living room! As for Marion Cotillard's win for best actress, it came as a shock to most people, but not to the few people who've seen her movie where she portrayed Edith Piaf. People tell me she was absolutely extraordinary in that movie & the academy does often go for actors going through serious physical changes for a movie. She's unrecognizable as Piaf & as one of the posters mentionned, totally un-beautiful in that movie. I didn't even recognize her when she appeared on the Red Carpet prior to the proceedings.

My sentimental favorites didn't win last night, unfortunately. I had hoped for Halifax' Ellen Page to win the Oscar for best actress in the great "Juno". I watched this movie on Saturday & absolutely loved both the movie & her strong performance. Here is what Roger Ebert said of Page in his review of the movie: "Page's presence and timing are extraordinary. I have seen her in only two films, she is only 20, and I think she will be one of the great actors of her time." I cannot agree more. Of course, while i had a strong feeling that "No Country for Old Men" would win the Oscar for best movie, i would have been very pleased to see "Juno" win. Well at least, the movie's screenplay writer "Diablo Cody", a former stripper, won the Oscar. I'll even go on to say that this movie directed by Canadian Jason Reitman & filmed in Vancouver has to be one of the best movies i've seen all year, if not 'the' best. It's that good! By the way, it also stars Canadian actor Michael Cera (that geeky kid in "Superbad") in a supporting role. He plays Juno's best friend Paulie, who impregnates her at the beginning of the movie (she wanted to know what it was to get laid, so she chose her best friend to help her out). Another one of my favorites this year didn't win much. It's the movie that won at the Golden Globes, Atonement. What a great movie that was! It's based on a book written in 2002 or 2003 which later was voted as being one of the top 100 fiction books of all time. Hey, what can i say...i'm a sucker for love stories. Two of my favorite movies i've seen in the past 5 years are "The Notebook" (with Rachel McAdams & the wonderful Ryan Gossling) and "Pride & Prejudice"....the Keira Knightley version.

Generally, the Oscars were once again a ho-hum affair. These shows have become so long & predictable that i know prefer watching the Red Carpet show prior to the proceedings. My favorite awards show have been the Golden Globes for the past few years. It combines both tv & movie actors, etc....and the booze is flowing all night long & they looked more relaxed. Jon Stewart is as good as anyone who's ever hosted the show other than the fantastic Billy Crystal. Crystal is the one who chose not to host the show....i guess he doesn't want to be another Bob Hope, who hosted the show for what seems like forever. Come on....you can't tell me that Ellen Degeneres & Woopie Goldberg are better hosts than Stewart! The problem with hosting the show is that they always fall back to a comedian for doing it. Why not try something different for a change & have a different type of host? The best person, in my mind, to do it lives right next door & his name is Arnold Schwarznegger. He'd be perfect!! One of the things that makes Crystal great is the fact he's in the movie business himself. People like Stewart, Degeneres, Letterman & company are tv people. George Clooney might be a good host, who knows? It doesn't always have to be funny. What makes the show worse most of than not is when the jokes aren't funny. It makes the show look stupid. Okay, here's my choice for the show's host next year: Bill Maher. He's one of the smartest, funniest people in showbiz & he'd be great. I'll bet you he'd be the closest thing to make people forget Billy Crystal, who's totally fed up with hosting the show. Bring on Bill Maher!

Bill Maher as host of the Academy Awards is an excellent idea! I have seen him in person and I think he is so funny. But maybe just my kinda humor. Of course most of his funny lines would be censored out so also added benefit of shorter show.

Billy Crystal is my all time favorite. Hard to replace his quick wit and humor during unexpected moments in show.

I enjoy watching the Oscars but I am a little biased since I live in Los Angeles and work in the Entertainment Industry.

Years ago I went to an Oscar rehearsal the day before the show and then an Oscar after party. Trust me, it was fun. Almost as much fun as seeing beautiful, sexy French girls in Montreal..... ;)

That's the difference between Crystal and Stewart. Stewart is completely scripted and can't think on his feet like Crystal can. On top of that, he is an annoying, pompous twit. He absolutely should be relieved immediately of his hosting duties by the Academy. I don't care who they bring in, but please just get rid of Stewart.

Chris Rock was probably the only bigger disaster. Who can forget Rock continually mocking Jude Law throughout the show, only to have Sean Penn take the stage and retort by defending Law's acting ability, in the process making Rock look like a total asshole, and insuring his subsequent termination as host by the Academy. All that can be kindly said about Stewart is that he avoided the all time low achieved by Rock.

Let's give Steve Martin another shot. He's underutilized in my opinion. I also believe he can think on his feet better than Stewart, and he is not a twit.

Hey..I like movies..so I would like to say a couple things..I did see a lot of the movies that were nominated...

I did not see mention of " The Kite Runner " or " Before the Devil knows you're dead "...both excellent movies...

La Vie en Rose was an excellent movie...too bad I do not understand French, but the story of Edith Piaf was brought to life...The actress did a lot of physical changes during the course of the movie..all the way until the end...

The best foreign film is about to play in the NYC area..the Counterfeiters..a story about the Nazi's using a concentration camp prisoner to print fake money...did anyone see it yet ?

Persepolis was quite a film...drawn by hand...rather than Ratatouille, which had huge computer assisted drawing..I really think that it is a shame they both compete in the same category

Javier Bardem is doing Penelope Cruz..quite a year for him !!!

The old man was Robert Boyle...among his Hitch films was Shadow of a Doubt, and North by Northwest- 2 great films

Best Regards

I agree that Marion Cotillard was amazing looking.

But my favorite was Amy Adams.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought Tilda Swinton was hot in Michael Clayton; she looked horrible at the Oscars though, like the hippie MILF at your kids' school.

I was surprised that Bourne Ultimatum got so many technical Oscars.

I was just glad to see the Coen Brothers finally get their due. I have been a Coen Brothers fan for years and I own nearly all their films on tape or DVD. I have to say however, that while I liked "No Country for Old Men" I thought a few of their earlier movies were even better. For example, I believe that "The Big Labowski" is the best movie ever made. It is the "Gone With the Wind" of our times. I also thought "Fargo" was a better movie. My problem with "No Country...." was the ending. It also didn't make me laugh like many of their other movies did.

During their acceptance speach one of the Coen brothers talked about making a film with his brother in the Minneapolis Airport when they were kids. I'd kind of like to see that film.

Coen Brothers & Marion Cotillard

hungry 101,

Not to mention "Blood Simple", "Raising Arizona", "O Brother Where Art Thou", and "The Man Who Wasn't There", which featured a young Scarlett Johanssen in a role that put her on the map. The Coen Brothers' resume is as good as any filmmaker's over the past 20 years.

Regarding Marion Cotillard, some pics of her with her Oscar:

And a couple of duds like "Intolerable Cruelty" and "The Ladykillers". Regardless, the Coen brothers filmography is indeed pretty impressive and it's good to see them coming back to form with "No Country for Old Men" which is undoubtedly their best film since "Fargo".

I do however, believe that "There Will be Blood" was the better film and that in 20 years time, it will be considered a classic and will make it's way into the top 100 AFI list. But this was the Coen brothers' year.

As for this year's Oscars, I din't really have a problem with Stewart as a host although a lot of the jokes fell flat. The problem isn't the host, it's the Oscars themselves. Too long, with a bunch of categories mainstream audiences don't care about, presenters (with a few exceptions) with little start power (I mean come on, The Rock? Cameron Diaz? etc...), retrospective segments that are getting old, and this year, little to no suspense aside from Tilda Swinton's win. All the other main categories were fairly predictable. Add to that very few films with mainstream audience appeal and the "globalization" of the Oscars (for example, none of the supporting/best actor winners were Americans). All these factors combined into the lowest rated Oscars in history, with a 10.7 rating among adults 18 to 49. Not even Billy Crystal could have "saved" this year's Oscars.

Come on, Beave. Aren't you a tad exaggerating? Did you at least watch those Oscars, or did you just read this stuff up in your weekly right-wing tabloid? This isn't how it happened at all. Chris Rock was joking around and actually praising today's acting legends & comparing them with today's 'stars' which many people have never heard about or wouldn't recognize if they stood in front of them. He'd say something like "now, there's Jack.....now, that's a star. Jack! Clint Eastwood. Now, that's a star! But then you have other actors....(and he went through the process of naming a few of today's acting stars who are mere weaklings compared to the giants he named earlier)....Jude Law! Who the heck is Jude Law?" He was joking & obviously, you don't get his humour (nor Jon Stewart's humour i see). Sean Penn is the one who looked like a complete ass when he walked onto the stage (to make a presentation) and took a moment to put down Rock for his comments in regards to his co-star & fellow actor Jude Law. Everyone in the place shook their heads, including Rock at the press conference after the show. Penn's outburst caught everyone by total surprise, probably even Jude Law himself. As for Penn, i think he's an acting genius & a very underrated director...however, the guy is a total ass.

Look, i'm not a Chris Rock fan. But to say he was the one looking like an asshole on that night is totally incorrect & not telling the folks how it actually happened. There was only one asshole that night (and the majority is in agreement) and it was Sean Penn. The guy simply has no sense of humour & cannot take a joke. Sound familiar? :D

JB,

You are probably correct as far as your analysis of that low rating. But there always has to be a scapegoat when there are record low ratings, and it is very clear that the scapegoat this year will be Jon Stewart. I am sure that ABC is communicating to the Academy, as we speak, that ABC is not happy with the 10.7 rating and the Academy better do something about it. And the something will be: (1) termination of Stewart as host; and (2) addressing some of the other issues you pointed out (at least those which can be addressed), like getting more star power for presenters, perhaps shortening the show and streamlining the telecast so that only the award categories that people care about are televised. That means no TV for the awards for costume design, production design, etc. which often go to boring geeks that do nothing to enliven the show anyway.

I have to say though, even with the idiotic, pompous hosts that they have had in the past few years since the Billy Crystal days ended, I have always watched and enjoyed the Academy Awards. That's just my personal opinion, although I can see that a lot of other people are bored by the show and the perceived lack of drama.

Given that there is not much competition being offered up opposite the Academy Awards, the 10.7 rating is truly shocking. It does send a message that a lot of people just don't care.
