Where did you hear about this "Mary's Chicken House" ? I highly doubt that such a place exists or should I say, not with that name in Quebec. It has to be in French to exist here but you never know.

Hi there,

Well, the last time I was in Montreal was for the World Cup Of Hockey and a few people we met in Montreal recommended a place called " Mary's Chicken House " which was right by the old Forum where the Habs played. I only remember the entrance being like old wood surroundings. There was actually a lineup to get in and the food was excellent. Someone on Yahoo chat who is from Montreal knows of the place but could not remember the exact location. It is a real gem in Montreal that only the locals know about, I suppose. That's why I proposed the question here to see if the local folk know about it. Thanks

Hey thanks Larry88!

I also heard the restaurant located at the Bell Center is excellent but you have to be there early to get in. As for those clubs, where is Cleopatra's? May look for some fun after the Leafs/Habs game. Thanks...:)

Is that the truth? It's illegal for an establishment to have an English name? I've been going up to Montreal for years and I never knew that. Plus, I'm almost certain that I've been to places with English names...but now that you mention it....

This sounds like one of my favorite Ribs n' Chicken restaurants, the famous Bar B' Barn. It's located on Guy street, just south of Ste-Catherine street. It's fairly quiet now, as compared to a few years ago. I remember having to wait in line outside in order to get in, about 10 years ago. I used to go there and have supper before every Montreal Canadiens' game on Saturday evenings.

This restaurant was also a favorite of former Expos catcher 'Big' John Bateman. He created quite a rucus there one evening...

The place across from the old forum was called Texan restaurant with all the wood etc. It ahs been a closed up shack for yrs now.

The restaurant in the Bell Center is called La Mise auy Jeu & the last I knew, you needed to be a member & a reservation to get in but that might have changed. It's ok, but not great seeing as this is Montreal.

Moes', across the street is a fast food place if that is what you are looking for.

The Restaurant in the Bell Center is called Cage aux sport, and you don't have to be a member.
As for Mary's, someone in Montreal said there is such a place and looking at another post it may have a different name now.

I'm from NJ but originally from Brooklyn, NY.

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not complaining about Quebec signage. I guess it's because I've seen Gap, Burger King, Second Cup & Roots signs it never occured to me that there were regulations.

As a visitor I can honestly say "don't change a thing".

Fuck, now this is turning into a Quebec vs Canadian debate on what should be English or French.

The place people? Anyone who is local that knows the map of the city, please help me out here. Thanks

You can't be serious ? You are coming to Montreal to eat at such a place. It's a fast food chain of chicken & ribs that isn't even that good, it's shit ! At least if that is the type of food that you are coming to Montreal to indulge in, at least go to the best rib place here called Baton Rouge. Not that far from the Bell Center, about 1 mile east but on Ste Catherine St West at Jeanne Mance across from Place des Arts.
Rob, I'm from Montreal, & I've never heard of such a place & no place with such a name, is allowed to exist here. With such namea as "Mary's" & "House", words that are both English. There is no apostrophe in the French language, it's unique to the English language.

Dude,

Someone who has also lived in Montreal mentioned the place at the Bell Center and said there were lineups to get in. Cage Aux Sport has lineups for a reason but I didn't say I'd be going there.
As for Mary's, I'll take your word on the French thing about naming places but I remember the place but can't remember the location. As for Baton Rouge, you say it's the best Rib place? I'll have to check it out, Thanks!;)

Hmmm
Maybe a bad translation for St.Hubert!! Never heards of this place...
As mentioned above the best for Ribs is Baton Rouge, as far as close to the Bell center-Mo'es is good and usualy fun, Hurleys Irish Pub,for more upscale hit Queue de Cheval for some of the best steak in the city and just steps from the Rink.

Mr. S. Lover

"don't change a thing" is idiomatic in that that it implies that things are great the way they are.

As in, "you're beautiful...don't ever change"

I meant it as a compliment to the city, the people, the food, and yes, the signs.

A specific exception to the rule about the use of English words on business signs is where the business is the owner or licensee of a registered trade mark.

... It's illegal for establishments or companies who are headquartered in Quebec to have English names & public signs must at least have French (supposedly twice as big as English) but can have both (never unilingual English).
Companies that have head offices outside of Quebec, such as The Gap, are allowed as they can't be forced to change their corporate name.
Companies from outside of Quebec, even if they have a unilingual English corporate name, must adopt a French trade name before their Quebec business registration would be accepted. Whether or not the company actually uses the French name is another matter.

With respect to the original question by H.R., I think he was probably being directed to the branch of the Cote St. Luc BBQ which was next to the now vacant McDonald's at the corner of Atwater and St. Catherine. I gather that there was a contractual dispute because the place has been known for years now as Cote St. Catherine BBQ. People would have lined up to get into the Cote St. Luc, but definitely not the St. Hubert BBQ!

They must have made a mistake, I have never heard of anything close to "Mary's chicken house", maybe in another city, but not Montreal.

There is a newer St. Hubert's right next to the Bell Centre in the old Windsor Station on de La Gauchetiere street

Dude,

For the record, the last time I was in Montreal was September 14, 1996 for the World Cup Of Hockey when Canada lost to the U.S. in the final game. I remember this place but I don't remember its exact location. I also remember on the train ride to Montreal there were hockey fans talking about the place. Yes "Mary's Chicken House" and some people on here have said maybe the name changed. The only thing I remember from the place is the old style wooden architecture from the front entrance and the stairs leading down into the restaurant.

Another city? nope! Cause I was there dude!

Ciao;)

baton rouge

Just a little note here. Was at the Bell Center 2 weeks ago and noticed that the Moe's restaurant which was just a few steps across the street is now being replaced by a Baton Rouge. So if Chicken and Rib's is your thing, you'll enjoy this place. As far as La Cage aux Sport which is located in the Bell center. The only time they really get busy is on game nights but the rest of the time it's rather dead.

Urban legend or joke?

H.R.

In our haste to be helpful to what appeared to have been a legitimate inquiry by someone, I begin to wonder if your (short & long-term) memory is failing you or if you're having some fun at our expense. I raise the question because no one local knows of such a place, and the facts you have presented evolved somewhat.

1. Who told you about this place?

First you said people you met in Montreal told you about it, then you said people on the train to Montreal were talking about this place.

2. What do you mean by "right by the old Forum where the Habs played"?

Three chicken restaurants which are or were within one block of the Forum at the time of the World Cup have been suggested here, but they don't correspond to the description you gave of the exterior decor. The wooden decor matches the Bar-B Barn on Guy Street, but this restaurant is 6 blocks away from the Forum.

3. Did you actually go into the restaurant?

You start out saying that you only heard about it from people, and want to know where it is. You then later are able to describe the entrance and the fact that there was a line-up, adding that "the food was excellent".

Thinking on this...when I was in Niagra there was a place called Mary Brown's Chicken...the motto was "Mary Brown has the best breasts in town" ( true)...this was more of a KFC type place...
