PM says Bernier's personal life none of his business

OTTAWA - Dismissing the opposition as "busybodies," the Conservative government said Thursday the fact that Canada's foreign minister recently dated a woman once linked to Quebec biker gangs is a private matter that is "none of your business."

A bitter debate rife with moral indignation exploded in Parliament after the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois attempted to question Maxime Bernier over reports that his ex-girlfriend, 38-year-old Julie Couillard, was once married to a Quebec biker gang member.

Insults and catcalls flew across the floor of the House of Commons during a fight that centred on a politician's right to a private life versus concerns over national security.

At one point, the Conservatives openly questioned why the Speaker of the House of Commons, Liberal Peter Milliken, was allowing the questions on the subject in the first place.

Milliken threatened to extend a boisterous Question Period by 20 to 30 minutes if the Conservative benches did not cease booing his attempts to hear questions, ruling that the opposition parties were raising valid national security concerns.

A University of Ottawa security expert, appointed last year to the prime minister's national security advisory council, said that a significant other with past ties to biker gangs could be considered a "very considerable" risk by national-security officials within the government.

"Nobody takes the Hells Angels lightly," said Wesley Wark, a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

Prior to Question Period, Prime Minister Stephen Harper came to Bernier's defence by lashing out at Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe and Liberal Leader Stephane Dion for raising the matter a day earlier.

Who is Julie Couillard?

Drug dealer chose Julie Couillard over Hells Angels career

n 1997, a man's love for Julie Couillard forced him to make a tough decision, choosing marriage with her over his successful career as a Hells Angels drug dealer. It was a decision Stéphane Sirois would later regret. But it also set off a chain of events that turned him into one of the best witnesses to testify against the biker gang in Quebec.

Couillard has caused a storm on Parliament Hill. While recently dating Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier, the divorced 38-year-old Laval resident drew public attention in August by wearing an eye-catching dress to the ceremony at Rideau Hall where the minister was sworn in. Now, questions have been raised about her past relations with men in Quebec's murky underworld.

But there was nothing mysterious about the clear ultimatum Maurice (Mom) Boucher put to Sirois more than a decade ago. With the biker gang war at its violent peak in 1997, the Hells Angels leader saw potential police informants under every rock. Sirois had to choose between marrying Couillard, who had previously dated a man Boucher suspected was an informant, or continuing his life dealing drugs in Anjou and Tetreaultville as a member of the Rockers, the Hells Angels' puppet gang.

Sirois chose Couillard. But, as he would later testify in court, it was also a choice that turned his life around. Sirois's marriage to Couillard lasted only two years. The marriage seemed doomed from the start. Hours before the wedding, members of the Rockers gang paid Sirois a visit and claimed he owed the gang $5,000. Feeling his life was in ruins, Sirois sank into a depression in 1999, when he suddenly remembered the business card a police investigator gave him just after he married Couillard.

The Wolverine squad, elite investigators from various police forces assembled to target the province's biker gangs, knew Sirois fell out of favour by marrying Couillard. They approached him about working for them.

Harper and the CON servatives are a bunch of hypocrites - if this was a Liberal cabinet minister and they were in opposition, they would be asking the same questions, probably being even more nasty about it

You could well be correct but that doesn't mean the Liberals are saints. In general politicians appear to be offensive lowlifes who are good at finding real or imagined faults in their opponents but are usually equally guilty themselves. I haven't got an ounce of respect for any of them.

Frankly she looks a little dumpy... those in power can usually attract better looking and younger...

She seems to fall in that fascinating group of women who are attractive to men in power... I expect she would be a very interesting person to get to know... also I imagine she would have above average talents in relaxing a man...

I think the press and Ignatief come off looking like Jerry Springer on this one. They keep classifying her as having "ties to biker gangs". Those ties consist of being married to a biker 10 years ago and trying to get him out of the gangs. In fact the gangs didn't like her as a result. Moms Bucher is quoted as saying he considered putting out a hit on her. This was all a very long time ago.

She has no criminal record and has never been charged with a crime. Bernier is Foreign Affairs so this so-called security expert must be smoking something if he sees some kind of security threat. Like the Hell's Angel care about our policy in Bosnia.

I was driving through Ottawa yesterday and heard parts of the House Question Period on CFRA 580. Iggy was trying to hammer the Conservatives on this and a guy from the Conservatives stands up (not Bernier) and says " Mr Ignatief , it's clear that you are no Trudeau" The whole place burst out in laughter.

Layton also critisized Iggy for wasting the Parliaments time.

Public opinion from the phone-in appeared to be 80% in support of Bernier as it should be in my opinion.

This should be good for Dion in an odd way as his chief rival, Iggy comes off looking like a low-level jerk.

The idiot in this story is the honorable minister Max "NUMBNUT" Bernier.

How much brain is transfered to your dick to date an ex biker wife. I'm sure he had a background check on her and knew her past. Still he dates her. Imagine if this was in the states.

Maybe he seduced her with a Joe Louis cake like he did with the boys in Afghanistan. I'm so ashamed to be Canadian with such idiots running our country. Who are the real whores?

I hate politicians that make a big deal out of another politician's personal life and sex life.
It offends me that assholes like that would think that the Canadian public would be shocked.

And it's about time that the liberal party gets rid of the ferret faced pissant, Stéphane Dion. And clean out some assholes like Scarpaglia who should represent RDP on not the WI

Yes, because a natural thing to do is to have a background check done on a girl you date.

By the way, I bet 90% of SPs have current "ties to biker gangs" of one sort or another. That doesn't exactly put you in a great position to criticize him.

If your in politics yes indeed. If I'm not sure about someone, there's private eyes that can do the work for you. Don't you know that almost all women are gold diggers!

I'm not in politics or a public figure. You really think I would have encounters with sp on the south shore if I was? It would be a political suicide.

By the way are you Max "NUMBNUT" Bernier ?
Obviously you're not in politics or a public figure.
I'm not saying don't date an ex-biker chick. I'm saying if you're in Politics, think with your brain not your dick! Everybody is out to get you. I still think that he's a total idiot.

Nahh not a big deal just bad PR. If he was smart he wouldn't bring her in the spotlight. We all know that organized crime is involved all over in politics but rarely they will make waves.

What country you talking about?

Thing is... it is a NATURAL thing for ministers and high officials to have background checks on them, yes. This is before official appointment to any important position. It has been reported in the news over the last few days (sorry for not posting the link, I feel a bit lazy, but read the articles on this topic and it has been written...). So 2 people come out like dimwits here:
Bernier... for doign this...
And Harper, for appointing him nonetheless!

The state has nothgin to do in my bedroom, but i am not part of the State, so...

It has been known that some men have spilled their secrets to lovely ladies in their lives in the past... and it has been known that criminal organisations have come to "recuperate" connections to people previously in their orbit... So yes I think it is something for us to wonder about!

How did they meet?

I'd be curious to find out how they met. I mean, how does a high ranked member of government get to meet a former high profile criminal biker's wife who's been involved with various members of organized crime for nearly a decade? This is what i'd like to know & which i consider as important as all the rest that's come up.

I feel the same way and I'm very curious to know as well. IMO, its a fair and valid question to ask with respect to a government official's person life. Her past is suspect, and that reflects on him, whether he likes it or not, because it raises questions on his own character and choice.

On a milder note, I don't think she's hot and for him to put it all on the line for her, I think he's an idiot lol.

I agree, but for those who are into that kind of stuff, she might be MILF hot. But whoever wrote that she was hdh material needs to consult an ophtalmologist. As for Bernier, he's an idiot. The guy has the judgement of a George Bush. He's put his foot in his mouth a few weeks ago during his visit to Afghanistan & now there are pictures of him smiling & shaking hands with a Mtl businessman with known ties to some Mohawks organized crime groups. I'll post the story in my next post.
