    Canada's thought police

I stopped posting here because it became quite clear how one-sided everyone is. It seemed no one shared my opinions. How I got hammered on my free speech warnings. Well, once again I feel vindicated and more enlightened than the merb who’s …who.
I am not posting for self-gratification. If your country doesn’t get it’s sh*t together on free speech, the cancer is going to spread to my country. The truth=hate speech!

Speaking about free speech... we all know how speeking freely about some people in the US can get you in deep sh*t nowadays...

Although this article talks about some guy not being treated properly by an organisation in Canada... We've seen this all over the world including in the US.

We're not in the 'Walt Disney' era anymore.

    Where are your sources?

“The United States, however, is an isolated exception, as Western nations seek to impose wider restrictions on what has come to be called "hate speech."

Freedom of speech does not exist. It never really did.

And yes, it is an "american" concept but people are not really much more "free" to say what they want in the USA than they are in Iran or Saudi Arabia, or France, or Botswana, or anywhere else. The main difference is that if you say something offensive in the US, it becomes a media circus, followed by lawsuits etc... In some other countries (France for example) people will protest in the streets and the customary strikes will take place. In other countries yes (say, Iran), they just chop off your head, which is much more efficient for the taxpayers.

I've been down this road when it comes to merb, and trust me, you will find more free speech in a stalin-era soviet gulag than here. Don't try to push it. Take your bread crust and dirty water and be thankful that you are not working in a salt mine.

Beautydigger -- you say a lot of dumb things, which is why people rarely agree with you. In this case you are right though... There is no free speech here. So let it rest. You can start your own board if you want ultimate free speech. I gave up on this issue a long time ago.

I don't think you really need to worry about our Canadian "cancer" spreading to America.

A scary number of people in the US have never even heard of Canada and most of those who have can't point to it on a map even though it's MASSIVE.

If I were you, I would worry about other, more poignant things such as an economy running a 10 trillion dollar deficit with a 3 trillion dollar GDP. Free speech won;t matter much when everyone is poor and starving in 25yrs, wondering why the Chinese are living it up

My source is part of my profession.
I know a great deal about laws and history... and freedom of speech is like Ben Dover says... it is allowed whenever it is.

Many people think that 'rights' aren't 'responsabilities' as well and yet... read the constitutional act, the criminal code or whatever you want to read and you'll see.

Basically... you can say whatever you want to. Unless you mess up with someone who has more money, power or will to make you shut up !

It's the basic law on this earth my friend !

Not too professional. I guess your profession does not deal with the 1st amendment of the US constitution, but I do realize that Canada does not protect a citizen’s right to free speech.

I will worry about Free Speech in Canada if (big if) this guy is convicted and if (huge if) this conviction is not reversed on appeal. I am willing to bet that he will win in the end.

As for comparing free speech in Canada vs. Iran, I invite anyone who thinks this is true to experiment it themselves, or to ask an Iranian what their views are on the subject.

As for this board, I've posted stuff that people have disagreed with before. They've responded. Sometimes I'm in the majority, sometimes in the minority. That's what free speech is about.

That's exactly what you do BD
You guess !!! ...all the time !

Do you really think you will help the 'anti-Americanism' as you call it, by saying things like Canada should get it's sh*t together ?

Well...guess what ! I have really close relative in the US.
And... I studied the 1st amendement among other things.

It's cute and beautiful on paper... but there is so much more you should know than just an amendement.

I think it's due to mass "ennuie" caused in part by a proliferation of stupid people and stupid threads.

    censorship?
maybe for a couple people (I guess that was your stated reason for leaving), but I don't see a trend here. And, if you are here now, does that mean you never left?

    US dollar?
Again, maybe a few people are hobbying less, thus checking the board less...

    Anti-americanism?
I don't even get this? You mean that canadians are driving americans away from the board? Seems ridiculous. But, then again, you never know what the "big terror threat to the north" is plotting, do ya!

I believe an relatively equal number of "old" canadian posters have vanished...

Maybe people are getting a life! Or maybe they are just dying off from natural causes...

I'm relatively new to this board, but I've only seen people get kicked out for abusive comments, never for just expressing an opinion. Now if you express an unpopular opinion, some people will jump all over you. So what? That's free speech. I don't let them bother me.
