Started this discussion over 30 years ago with a lawyer that used to frequent SCs including one where I worked. Recent posts revived memories of those discussions. Coupled with the benefit of some hindsight and hopefully maturity I will outline the discussion as a starting point.

Escapism - a TEMPORARY mental or physical diversion that allows the participant(s) to escape from the drudgery of a routine. The participant relies on external stimuli for the diversion but is realistic about the limits of the activity.

Fantasy - a mental or physical diversion that allows the participant(s) to separate themself(ves) from the drudgery of a routine. The participant relies on a combination of INTERNAL and EXTERNAL stimuli for the diversion.

Will use a hockey analogy to illustrate. A 40 year old business man plays hockey in a garage league once a week.

Escapism = showing up on time with his team, playing the game, relaxing afterwards with some refreshments while enjoying the comraderie.

Fantasy = showing up equipped like Sidney Crosby motivating himself to play better by trying to imitate the moves of Sidney Crosby, attributing more importance to the game than others by arguing with the referee and others.
Tracking his teams performance by subscribing to the latest stats package.

Discuss as you see relevent to the board.

Are you asking if I am sometimes a little insane or sometimes fully insane?

As a insane person, I cannot fully understand if I am just sometimes a little insane or in fact fully insane?

Having said that, I find it hard to believe that a high percentage of MERBites are lost in a fantasy hobby world. Or that either choice is really that bad?

you could be very...very...very...very...very.......very surprise about how much pple can be into this

True enough. I have only been to one GT and I have only really talked to 5 MERBites longer than 10 minutes. It would be really hard to know who the true freaks are without being one myself....... it is equally as hard to decide at what point is someone really a freak, needing medical help, without being a trained medical doctor specializing in this field.

EE,

I've noticed in the last few threads that you've started, you ask members to give their opinion (or information) on a topic that you evidently find interesting/important. Whether its your favorite SC, the importance of the age issue, or escapism vs fantasy, isn't it appropriate to give your point of view to start things off since you started the thread?

Maybe you can edit the 1st post to include what you actually think about your thread topic(s)...

Regards,

Voyager

Bargain night - three answers for one post.

Favourite SC thread is a prelude to a poll. A pollster should not reveal his opinion on the topic being polled. Otherwise he is not polling objectively but trying to bring others to his point of view.

The age issue. The topic was introduced into various threads and it was hard to determine if the views and replies were the result of the original thread or the the age issue. I had a suspicion that that a distinct thread would provide a more accurate picture. My own feeling is that it is a very insignificant issue.
This seems to be supported by the lack of specific replies to that thread. Also showing that a thread does not need many posts to make a point.

The Escapism vs Fantasy thread. I outlined the distinction. There seems to be a perception that Fantasy is the counterpoint to Reality. I am suggesting that there may be a third alternative - Escapism not necessarily a point in between Reality and Fantasy but off to the side, somewhat like a rest stop or a change of pace.
