The recent thread about cameras in the Latin Quarter got me thinking about all the panhandlers one sees in the downtown area. Is it my imagination, or does Montreal have more of these vagrants than most North American cities? Some of them are quite familiar, like the elderly blind woman and her guide dog, or the guy who plays the spoons. Others seem to come and go on a daily basis. Do you ever give money to these people? Is it a good or a bad idea to do so? Are street "entertainers," like the spoon player or that awful Irish tenor with the music stand, different from people who just hold out their hands, like that fellow who sits near the side entrance to Ogilvy's? Have you ever been threatened by one of these people? I was once, several years ago on Rene Levesque, and almost got into a fistfight. Does anyone have an opinion?

u think thats bad? in some asian countries, beggars follow you for awhile asking for money.. they are telling their stories and such too

if u want to help, donate to a soup kitchen or dans la rue.

i just dont like the fact that i give them money and they go boozing up

my two cents.

Clemenza and Eager, you've obviously never been to Toronto ! They have way more panhandlers and beggars then we do in MTL. Same goes for NY city, although that's normal given the size of NYC vs. MTL. Or maybe, since I live here I don't see them anymore since I'm used to them ? I don't know

To give to the needy is fine, however most panhandlers are drunk from the time they wake through the the time they go back to slee. Here in Ottawa and other major cities,I find that these people are too lazy,Iit is not a good policy to try to help people who don't want to help themselves.Try and offer a job to one and you will get all kind of excuses as to why they are as is.Donate for a good cause as chowda mentioned, not to promote lazyness....Ayata

Actually I have been to Toronto on a couple of occasions and that's one of the reasons I asked the question. I didn't notice any panhandlers in TO. Now, I'm certainly much less familiar with that city than Montreal, so maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places or maybe they're more spread out because TO is a larger city.

I can say that out of all the places I've been (US, Canada, Europe, etc), the beggers in downtown Montreal are the worst... There's so many of them and they just fucking badger you every inch of Ste. Catherine...

There was a time me and my friends were followed 2 blocks by one guy begging us for a smoke... And if we weren't so drunk he probably would have gotten on our nerves a lot faster then he did.

I'm with you on that one SL. Plus, as I've allready said on a few occasions, if you don't feel safe in our city (with so many panhandlers and muderers), then just stop coming here ! That's more SP's for us ! If I went hobbying to Boston or NY or which ever US city and I didn't feel safe or didn't like the place, then I would't bitch about it all day long, I would just bring my $$$'s elsewhere.

Eager, here's your quote

"I suspect that you do not wear clothes that quickly identify you as American as I do which is the only way to explain the differences in our experiences"

Out of curiosity, what the hell are clothes that identify you as Americans ? Do you walk around with a big US flag on your shoudlers ? ;)

Let's not make posts any more persnonal then they allready are. Let's keep this civil guys.

The kids panhandling that EB referred to earlier are picking up donations for their hockey team. I don't know if he should have included them among the rest he mentionned.

I've travelled all over the continent, and all over Canada spefically, and the situation in Mtl isn't worse than it is in Toronto or Vancouver. Yes, there are panhandlers. But i've learned to block them out when i'm strolling along Ste Catherine street and they really don't bother me. At times, i've even given them some spare change.

What i find a lot more annoying are the scalpers that hang around Bell Centre. Talk about aggressive and sometimes rude!!
If LE would decide to clamp down on them (as is the case in various other cities), i'd be patting them on the back!

Guys guys guys... C'mon... this is getting WAY out of hand! Eager take it easy man. I'm a MTLer but I also own a few harvard sweat shirts and college football or baseball caps, that doesn't make me an american target (or so I think). Anyways this has gone too far. Eager, I have nothing against you personally. I just didn't agree with what you said on this particular thread. No big deal ! Chill my friend ! I'm here to share info with other guys (and gals) who enjoy the same hobby as me, not to start picking fights and making enemies.

Peace :D

I guess so!

My intent in starting this thread was certainly not to slander the city of Montreal or its inhabitants. The very fact that I come to the city 3 or 4 times a year, on both hobbying and non-hobbying trips, speaks to my high regard for it. I think the safety of Montreal, relative to American cities of similar size, is indisputable.

Like most of you, I do not give money to the panhandlers I encounter, although I will occasionally donate to street musicians if I feel they play particularly well.
