If you were thinking about Providence...

As many of us Merb characters drive up to Montreal from New England, I thought I would share a recent sojourn to Providence, RI– the only place in the US (other than Nevada) where Sp laws are about the same as in Montreal. So as long as one is not engaged in "street action," you are pretty safe from the law. Needless to say, as providence is significantly closer for me than Montreal, I decided to give it a try.

Now, I have been going to Providence for strip clubs for many years. It has always had better clubs, and much better service than other states in the region. I particularly like The Cadillac Lounge. A friend and I go there at least one per month. And have met several great girls there; it's a lot like Cleo's. A real range of girls, not all barbie-doll types, and you can get to know them better. It's fun.

Anyway, I went recently and met a tiny little spinner type. She's only 19 but already has two kids, so her life is a bit messy, but I thought she was pretty hot in the dimmed club light of the Cadillac, so I got her number (easy), and we set up an incall visit for later in the week.

So here I found myself in my first non-Montreal SP situation. What would it be like? Had I found a new, equally good situation, right in my own backyard? This could be fantastic, no?

Alas, don't get your hopes up. I drove down and was finally given the actual destination as I approached. In retrospect, it seemed odd that she wouldn't give me an address when I was still an hour away, but it didn't matter, my GPS got me right there quickly. I parked in the tiny lot adjacent to a two story building with a pizza parlor and tanning salon on the ground floor. I called her again to confirm that I was there, and she agreed to come down and meet me. We went up a dingy staircase, and entered the skank-iest trailer-trash two room apartment that I had been inside of in 25 years. The single living/bedroom had fluorescent lights in the ceiling (very romantic), and a single bed on one wall, with two infant beds (one in a cinderella motif, and the other a Spiderman) on the other. As we entered, I was asked to place my $250 (for one hour) on the TV (there was only a TV and a cheap stereo unit; no other furniture). I did, and the woman I had seen as an angel only a day or two earlier was now before me, unceremoniously removing her hip huggers. She stripped down, and so did I. I embraced her and tried to kiss her, but quickly realized that was not on the menu. Indeed, hardly anything was on the menu. We settled on the tiny bed, and she immediately brought out a condom for a CBJ. No kissing, no DATY, no touching of anything.

We then spent 20 awkward minutes trying to get this old one even remotely excited enough for activity, meanwhile she stopped three times to answer three different cell phones. Whatever hopes I may have had for enjoying this blue-lit, trashy dump, with no contact and lots of interruptions soon faded. I had spent $260 actually (a stupidly generous touch, I am), and was clearly going to receive nothing.

By the way, in addition to the less than stellar ambiance, I noticed, just adjacent to the Cinderella bed, a thick, sharp steak knife lying on the floor. Maybe it was for packing (was she moving?) or maybe it was for defense. I don't know. I do know that Montreal has nothing to worry about, and that I regret my brief thought that it might.

I apologize, Montreal, for being unfaithful. Can you forgive me?

I was thinking about Providence, but not any more. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Hello Urbanite,

Back a few year ago when I couldn't wait 6 months over the winter to get back to Montreal I considered booking someone through Craig's list. I found someone I liked and emailed her. She told me the address in Boston, but I held off booking. Because I had to go to Boston I took the opportunity to check out the address. When I drove by the place it looked like total crap, old, run down, disgusting. I never even tried to enter and I forgot about the idea permanently. I suggest you stick to Montreal or Montreal escorts visiting nice hotels in our area.

    Good luck,

When will we realize how good we have it?

I agree completely with the posters above - I've been to many, many places all over the world, including Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Bangkok, J'burg, Sydney, FKK in Germany, private clubs in Amsterdam and London, etc..., and nothing compares to the variety, value, and charm of the Montreal hobby scene. Period. If you're vacationing anywhere and expect to find action, get a taste to cross it off your list, but save the money and effort for the guaranteed, grade-A product we get here every single day.

    I know, I know...

Well, you guys are right, and I was a dope. Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly with you collective wisdom, and after all, the drive to Montreal is lovely (even if a bit long). And I agree that we don't realize how great a deal we've got in Montreal. It's the best, and when this run is inevitably over (and it will end, somehow, for some reason), we will look back on this as an incredible golden age. All I can say is that outside of this community, what other middle-aged men are having anything like the fun we are?

    Answer: none.

Hey, you took a chance and it didn't work out. Don't stress about it, it could have turned out to be a diamond in the rough but you wouldn't have known had you not taken the chance.

It does bring back memories though. I haven't been to Cadillac Lounge since it was a "bring your own booze establishment." Lol. Nothing to me will ever compare to the old Mario's Showplace in Johnston Rhode Island though, had many an amazing night there as well as a couple take out sessions that were also fabulous!

First strip club I ever visited...and I was 16 years old.

Funny story, I was on a bachelor party that night and most of my friends were older at the time and the groom was about 24, anyway, we rent a suite in a hotel room at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, the hotel is designed so that all the floors circle around a large dining room on the ground level and there's also two all glass elevators to see out while traveling up to your room.

At one point while returning to the suite in the elevator I look out the glass and there goes a body flying by the elevator from about the 18th floor and lands smack in the middle of the dining right next to people trying to enjoy their dinners. Lol. Luckily it wasn't anyone from our party, but the ensuing interviews with the PD that lasted a few hours put a damper on the festivities as well as the gals we had booked.

    Hello Special K,

I used to love the old Fantasies myself. Those big padded chairs and little side rooms were soooo much fun.

Hey Eastender: how the hell did you know about the Naked I?

    The devil told me.

Education and work took me to Boston about 3-4 times a year in the mid 1970's-80's. BTW the combat zone was never the same after the Harvard FB player was stabbed in 1976 or 1977.

    memories

    Eastender, Special K, and Korbie-

I was first introduced to the strip club scene here at the Naked i in the mid-1990s, a couple of years before its demise. I wasn't around during the real combat zone days, but I enjoyed the Glass Slipper back in the day, not because of the contact of course (there was none), but because the girls were cool, smart, and often very hot. I had plenty of take-out from the GS between say, 1998-2002. And like the Cadillac and Cleo's it always offered a kind of run-down roadhouse atmosphere so superior to the rancid polish of the more corporate clubs (which now includes the stock market-listed CENTERFOLDS chain as well– what a clip joint that is!).

If we are reminiscing, I guess I could share my very first exposure to this world, in Baltimore, on what they call The Block, in the mid-1980s. I was a very poor youngster starting my professional career (reference point: my apartment cost $200/mo), but I found it necessary to save enough for occasional trips to The block, which again, frequently included take-out. I guess I just didn't realize then that this was an outstanding feature that one couldn't take for granted. I still enjoy some TO in Montreal, but certainly not on a regular basis. I suppose the fact that I am no longer in my 20s makes it that much harder to pull off!

Anyway, here's to these non-corporate clubs, where we can still meet interesting girls, and occasionally, have some fun afterwards as well. But as for seeking escorts in Providence, I think I am done.

I have to admit that I was hopeful reading your headline but then that hope faded when you got into the details of what actually happened.

Yes, the Naked I brings back memories. I never knew how good we had it until it went under the wrecking ball.

Did anyone save any part of the parquet floor at the back? Kind of like what they did with the parquet from the Gahden?

I've been nowhere near the "gentlemen's club" which remains down in the Combat Zone. I'm just not into "gentlemen's clubs".

So what remains in Boston of the strip club scene is out in the 'burbs: Alex's in Stoughton, The Squire in Revere, the Golden Banana and Cabaret in Peabody. That is it.

Yes, it's true that Rhode Island has similar laws to Canada, in that indoors prostitution is not illegal. In fact, IIRC, there isn't even a "bawdy house" law in Rhode Island.

    BUT

    a) The authorities are aware of the loopholes, and have been using the state legislature to try to change the laws. They have not been successful yet, but you never know.

    b) Different culture.
