Want to buy a new laptop - any suggestions?

Hey guys

Figuring that many of you have good laptops you are happy with, so any suggestions in terms of brand or model?

I will use it mainly for leisure (net, chat, e-mail) and maybe if I decide to take some classes in University

I would always reccomend a Dell laptop if your looking for something inexpensive and reliable. I have owned several Dell laptops and they have all performed great. You should be able to get what your looking for under $600.

I'd say wait till your a student...

I'd say wait till your a student to get the student discount, and I'd go with a Macbook.

I bought my first Mac G3/400 Pismo Powerbook in 1998, and it still running along nicely.

I purchased a Compak Presario A900 from Future Shop last February and I have no complaints but this model may not be the rigth choice for you. I noticed that batteries only last a few hours before they need to be charged. This is not an inconvenience for me because I only use my portable at home.

My only suggestion to you is to pay attention to the power pack (batteries) included with your portable.

Reppy, I would stick with a Windows machine as software is much more 'readily available' for one thing. Much cheaper for another.

My preference goes towards Toshiba right now followed by HP/compaq. Acer are very cheap machines and we have had a lot of problems with them and only sell them as a last resort to people who are just looking for a low price. Dell are not bad but I'm really not crazy about them. I would also avoid any system that is loaded with Windows Vista Basic. That is a sure sign that it is an underpowered machine.

That's pretty much par for the course for battery time. You can't expect to run a laptop for 8 hours on battery power.

That might have been true when the Mac launched in 1986, but right now there are tens of thousands of pieces of software.

the Macbook has both iLife and iWork packages available which work beautifully.

There is no windows system that comes close to matching MacOSX for ease of use, security, and grace.

Go up to the Apple store and take in their free workshops to see what Mac is all about. I finally moved over to Mac a few months ago and it's great to not have to do deal with freezes, lock ups, crashes, and all the other good stuff that usually come with PCs.

Tangentially, do you happen to know what 100% of all university graduates in India have done? They all have passed strenuous English language literacy tests.

Unfortunately the fact that they are literate does not make them any easier to understand for the average person who would have trouble with a native English speaker giving them instructions on how to fix their problem.

And this has nothing to do with being racist, it's just a fact. I have dealt with so many outsourced telephone tech support staff from various companies, including Dell and MS, whose accent made comprehension next to impossible.

Agreed. The guy can be the most competent person in the world, if you can't understand him, he's useless. I had to deal with some British the other day and it was difficult so, Indian guys...
