Did anyone watch the fight tonight? Do you agree that Bute won fairly or do you think that Andrade should have won by a KO in the 12th?

Bute was strong right up until the 9th when he lost it a little and Andrade won that round. After which, Bute pretty much dominated the fight but he turns to jello in the 12th and could barely stand up! The ref begins the count, turns to clear Andrade aside and comes back to finish the count? In all fairness to Andrade, I think Bute was a KO win for him. Now don't get me wrong, I was cheering for Bute to win all the way. Yes he did win but I think it's a controversial win... no?

I was shocked!

BUTE WAS SAVED BY THE REF

Andrade should call Bret Hart, another montreal screw job.

I heard the fight was fixed, Bute was out on his feet in the 12th round only to be given extra time by the referee because he could hardly stand up, Andrade should be champion today and not Bute, a black eye for boxing in Montreal.

I wasn't able to catch the fight last night but it sounds like the decision was a travesty. That's really too bad because it will make it difficult to convince top level fighters to come here for a championship fight. Hopefully I will find the fight on torrent today and watch it tonight to be able to give a first hand opinion. In the meantime here's an article from a respected boxing site and it seems they were not impressed at all:

I have a feeling that this will be referree Marlon B. Wright's last championship fight.

Sorry Honey,

But I was there. Bute took 8 of the 12 rounds. Its so easy to speculate write comments based on earsay.
As a matter of fact, its the referee that made a mistake at the end of the last round.
However Bute had the match and he played it right into Andrate's hands by going at it toe to toe with him in the 12 round.
Bute showed a lot of courage.

He is a deserving Champion.

Did you read Techmans article?, here is a sample video of the 12th round, read what most of the posters are saying along with the showtime commentators who were at ringside and do this for a living.

Actually I heard that he took 11 of the 12 rounds but I will let you in on a little secret and that is what ever happens in the 12th round counts no matter what you did in the previous 11 rounds, that's how boxing is scored bottom line.

From all reports, Bute fought an excellent fight. If anything he and his corner made a tactical error in continuing to go for it in the twelfth round instead of just staying away and winning easily on points.

Whatever the reason, the final decision on the count had nothing to do with Bute and was solely the error of the referee.

But I really miss the days when a championship was decided in 15 rounds, not 12. That's when fighters really had to dig down for that last gasp of strength to show that they really were a champion.

Thanks for the Youtube link Joe. From the ref's point of view, he said he had to tell Andrade to go back to his corner before he could finish his count. He basically said, if Andrade had gone back to his corner, he would have finished the count and Bute would have lost by a KO. Is this legit in doing the count?

Very valid points here Techman,

The score cards indicates that the bout was his ( Bute )

Mickey Vann from the United Kingdom : 115 -110
Benoit Roussel Montreal : 117 - 109
Alex Lavine USA : 115 - 111

It was unanimous.

Bute elected to disregard Larouche recommendation to stay away from
Andrate during the last round. Instead he went in and fight. I give Bute
credit for that, however it could of cost him his Belt !

Someone fill me in on the way a count is done.

From what I can see on the tape from the moment when Bute was down until he stood up, it took around 8-9 secondes. I thought that once up on your feet the count stops.

I believe that you need to get on your feet and need to be alert. The final decision on the count is up to the ref. If he thinks that you're already space out but still standing and could cause injury to continue fighting then he will end the fight. What I'm not clear about is that he started the count, showed a 6 count, turns around and spends 5-6 seconds telling Andrade to get back to his corner, comes back, starts counting from 5 again...

I think this 24 sec count thing is irrelevant. Regardless of the ref's antics and whether he was right or wrong in stopping the count and then wasting time telling Andrade to get back to his corner, the facts are as follows:

Bute got knocked down with 3-4 sec left.
If you count from that point on, he still gets up at 8 or 9. So he still beats the "real" count (if there had been one).
Fight's over.

However, it was clear that, with about 15 sec left in the round, Bute wasn't throwing punches, he wasn't defending himself, and he could barely stand up. The ref could, at that point, have stopped the fight or given Bute a standing 8 count. If he had done the former, some would have argued that you can't do that in a championship fight with 15 sec left in the last round. If he had done the later, some would argued that a standing 8 count favored Bute because it gave him time to recover.
