I have just equiped my new car with winter tires from Walmart, it took a month to get my special size. Dunlop Graspics. They include a road hazard warranty. I did not buy at Canadian Tire because they no longer include road hazard warranty and change $50 to $60 more as an option.
For my second car that I plan to trade in about 2 years I looked at Kijiji and Cr. List for used winter tires with rims. I found 4 winter tires with rims for $400. ( a saving of about $300 ) There is a severe winter tire shortage in the stores, if you can not get them at the stores try Kijiji or Cr. list. Happy winter driving.

Since winter tires are now mandatory in the province of Quebec, i'm not surprised there's a shortage. It'll be worse if Ontario & other provinces follow suit.

By the way, i agree with Quebec's initiative which will save many lives in the long run (and keep insurance costs down).

Its gotten so bad people are now having their tires stolen off their cars at

night. You find yourself with a nice little surprise in the morning when you

want to go to work and you have no tires.

Have winter tires become a lucrative black market item in the province of Quebec?

Out of province?

I assume that the local constabulary will only be checking cars with Quebec plates?

It's possible the Quebec Keystone Cops (SQ) haven't yet thought of that one.

The law only applies to cars with Quebec plates and from what I've heard reported in various news outlets they will mainly be focusing on cars involved in accidents.

Merry Chistmas.

When the Police have the car stops for drinking and driving around Christmas time I will bet that they will take a look at your tires as well. I have seen cops trolling through shopping centers trying to catch people at the handicapped parking without stickers. When they are low on their quotas they will troll the shopping centers for madatory snow tires in the winter time.

Suggestion: with these nice brand spanking new snow tires, everybody should get some locking nuts! Maybe $40 and not 100% guaranteed secure but, it's not much to protect sometimes over $1000 in tires, rims and now air pressure sensors... Insurance is good but it won't get you where you want to go when you find your car on blocks! :)

Million dollar idea.

All you need is a compressor, a media blaster ( thats sort of like a sand blaster ) and some stencils. You can sand blast a serial number or identifying letters or marks into the rubber of the tire. (hidden or not hidden) Thieves prefer not to be caught with items that have identifying marks. Even if the marks are removed it will still show that it was there in the first place.

GTA, that kind of marking may make the tire weak if not done properly. Not recommended unless it's on the thread and, that would kind of defeat the purpose since it would be a never-ending job to be redone every 1000km or so.
On top of this, unless it's 1 inch marking, I don't think anybody would notice! Black on black, not that visible!

I can't figure out why the provincial gov't didn't wait a year or two before implementing this new law. It would have given quebecers & retailers a better opportunity to prepare themselves for this. Winter tires aren't exactly cheap either. If you want a good brand (such as Blizzak), you'll be spending around $1000+ on winter tires. People could have saved up in order to purchase the tires. Companies would have had a better opportunity to supply their retailers would tires. Now it's kind of chaotic & people are getting robbed of their tires by a bunch of winter tire thieves. It's also not exactly a great time to suddenly start spending on winter tires considering the economy is heading down the drain & there's a recession right around the corner.

The sooner they implented it the better

Voyageur is right they have been talking about it for a while so people should

have started to get prepared because the govt says something it happens!!

I do not agree that marking the tires on the sidewall will weaken the tires. When they make a tombstone, they use sand blasting to blast out the lettering on the stone, with a sheet of rubber to protect the areas that they do not want to mark up. Rubber is very resiliant, a light sand blasting will scuff an identification number on to the tire. You do not need one inch markings to deter the thief, all you haveto do is to let them know that it is marked. When they sell you marking at the car dealers, they make 1/2 in. letters and numbers. Even etching on the rims is better than nothing.

GTA, I didn't say it will always damage the tires, I said it could if done by somebody who doesn't know what he's doing. It's a risky business to be done by do-it-yourselfers.

On a car, how ofter are you checking the marking on tires around you? How often is that marking clear enough to be read standing-up? To have an important deterrent on thieves, it would need to be easily visible. It's still a minority of tires who are unidirectional so, all that would be required for somebody installing stolen tires is to mount them with the marking on the inside! Option is to mark both side? Easier with lock nuts! A thief looking at a car with lock nuts will prefer the other car beside who doesn't have lock nuts.
