With all the hoopla around Patrick Roy, I thought I'd ask you guys whether you think Jersey #33 should be retired.

Is there a way to turn this into a poll?

1. No way, Habs should NEVER retire the number of a bum like him, especially after Dec 5th, 2002 (correct date?)

2. Absolutely, Roy was a hero for the habs for several great seasons, he is getting his due.

3. Yes, they should retire his number but should have waited several more years.

I'll answer first...

I don't think #33 should be retired EVER.

Patrick is/was one of the greatest goalies to ever put on a habs uniform; and to play the game for that matter. For that, he should be front and center in the HOCKEY hall of Fame.
But to have your jersey retired by one team, it should mean that you have shown the ultimate dedication and loyalty to that team and have acted in a way (as an ambassador for that team) that should be displayed for all to see for ever and ever.
While Roy is doing all his interviews this week, he's using examples of situations he encountered in Denver!

I personally think it takes more than just putting up great statistics and winning two cups to warrant retiring a jersey...it takes a true commitment to that team over a career.

Koivu, while he hasn't been the impact player Roy was on the ice, has contributed far more to Montreal Canadiens lore (overall) than Roy could ever hope to do.

So by that logic, Gretzky's #99 would never have been retired in Edmonton much less across the whole league. ;)

#33 should be retired, though I am not so sure it should be done just yet.

When he was with the Canadians he was a great ambassador for the team, his dedication to spending time with patients at the Children's and Ste-Justine's hospitals at Christmas time meant a lot to his fans; and even those kids who did not know who he was still got visits during a very lonely time to be sick and in hospital.

I know this because a friend of mine's kid got to meet in this way.

On a side note I have been hospitalized during the holiday season as a kid (respiratory infection, asthma, bronchitis.) and I got to meet Guy Lafleur!!! He gave me a monopoly game that I still have to this day. It really is a crap time to be in the hospital and while it has been a tradition for the team to go visit sick kids, it is completely voluntary and not all the players "do the rounds" so to speak. I know it meant a lot to me just to have some company on Christmas day.

Hey G1...I get what you're saying...but "the great one" is exactly that and (IMHO) deserved to have his # retired by ALL teams. There will likely never be another player who can earn 220+ points in one season...talk about an exception.

btw...thanks mod!

just food for thought during this important historical event for Montreal sports.

Cheers!

I think he deserves to have his sweater retired. The only problem I have with it is that it's being done on Grey Cup weekend. The game is being played in Montreal and the Als are in the final. This weekend should belong to them.

This shows you what a joke of an organization Toronto is – they “honour” Clark on the same night as the glorious Habs retire Patrick’s #33. Clark was nothing more than a cement headed player known more for his fighting abilities - who will never be in the hall of fame - unlike St. Patrick. Didn't Toronto have a similar ceremony honouring Tie Domi? Typical Toronto Maple Laffs, trying to upstage Montréal - loser organization, loser team, loser fans!

Roy left the team in disgrace

He is in NO way the best goalie of all time. In a league of 30 teams with loads of talentless players, how can you rate him to be one of the best??? Sorry, it does not compute. Another thing, someone who's Jersey deserves to be retired would be someone who contributed to the TEAM throughout his career with a team. He obviously thought only of himself and NOT the TEAM when he left like the crybaby he is. The guy was completely unprofessional in asking for a trade, and showed his true colors in sending his thug son out on ice to beat someone who was not willing to fight back... I think it is a huge mistake by the Canadiens as an organization to retire such a despicable person's jersey. He has no class, he beat his wife, he raised a son to be a goon... Hell, lets also give him praise for all that too. He was a fierce competitor, I give you that, but good enough to have his Jersey retired, I think not... Best goalie of all time? Sorry, I have to go with Ken Dryden who won more cups in a shorter career and left in his prime. Roy is a joke who at best should be begging Montreal for forgiveness for his disgusting behavior and showing kids it is ok to be a fucking selfish crybaby when playing a TEAM sport. Disagree as you wish, but I am one who will never recognize this Hack as a deserving member of Canadiens Hockey Royalty...
CA OUT!!!

Look at the kind of player and Dryden had in front of him hard not to come up with great number with the big 3 three in front of you with Lafleur and Lemaire in front scoring goal 3 différent era it cant be comparaison is not fair Take Roy number versus Brodeur, Belfour, goaler of today not from the pass

I think that 10 straight overtime playoff wins qualifies him to have his sweater retired no matter what else happened. I doubt that anyone will ever beat that record.

Actually Larry Robinson was "doing the rounds" at the hospital that same year. I remember laughing (and coughing, that is what happens when you laugh too hard and cannot breath properly) at the idea that if we married I would be called Ronnie Robinson (nice ring to it eh?)

It's hard to disagree with you. A case could also be made that his best seasons were as a member of the Colorado Avalanche & if it wasn't for his forced trade to Colorado, that his career might have taken a different path. However, even though he's an arrogant jerk-of-a-prick who beat his wife & has a very bad temper.....who embarrassed the whole organization & reversed its progress dramatically by forcing the team to trade him....he did indeed have a HOF career & his number being retired one day by the Habs was no-brainer. However, i still think it's too early....people haven't forgot what happened back in 1995-96.

I also do agree that he's not the Habs' best goalie ever. My vote goes to Jacques Plante, with Ken Dryden a close second.

Jacques Plante's and Ken Dryden's are both already retired.

I voted for it, and at the time he won the 10 straight OT games I was a Bruins fan and hated his guts for doing it. But I have since seen the light and am now a faithful Habs fan.:D

And tonight's ceremony was just another example of how the Canadiens are the classiest organization in sports and how Habs fans are still the best fans too!
