Do you have your own family dr aka GP?

Or are you included in the 32% of quebecers that also dont.

Compared to only 9% in Toronto

I don't either. It is a pain sometimes... and I am sure as I get older it will be even more so!

Can I ask why the poll?

Because of the stats that were revealed on the news today

32% of quebecers do not have a GP and wanted to see how MERB compares

to the results.

I'm part of that 32% also but luckily I rarely get sick

I had one... until he closed his practice.

I am now looking for one (it is over a year now) as I do have a chronic health condition that should be followed by doctor (oh the glories of ageing in Montreal!)

I think Montreal is worse, closer to 50% who don't have a GP! Incredible! And so many GPs who don't do family practice! Many only do walk-in! What a waste of time! Either you have nothing, and really don't need a doctor, or you have something and they're quick to send you to an Emergency!

I have one. Excellent doctor, take his time, might spend over an hour with you if there's a need for it, will actually listen to you... Problem is, appointments are on a 6 month list and, on appointment day, if you are supposed to be at 10:00, better be there at 10:00 but you might have to wait till 13:00! Knowing how good he treat his patients, the wait on appointment day isn't really an issue since you know he'll take care of you as good as the other peoples before you.

Yup, I am extremely lucky!

That is what walk-in clinics and hospital emergencies are for.

Communist? no. But we are much more socialist than some may care to admit. Personally I still think it is a better system than in the USA, where if you do not have insurance you are in deep doo-doo if you get sick. Even an throat infection can cost you easily $100 just to be diagnosed and get a prescription (not counting the cost of the antibiotics.)

Seems to me you are watching too much CNN and reading too much toilet papers such as the NY Times, LA Times, etc.... Stop it for your own sanity.

Just for the record, 90 % (+) of americans have health insurance. They don't need to wait 6 months to be diagnosed. Same day appointment is the norm. Generic antibiotics are availabe for cheap prices. You can get them at your local supermarket while shopping for groceries.

Sad to hear that the new messiah and his cronies, are mulling to change the US system and follow the Canadian Commie model of Tredau, Chretien , and Martin.

No, I live in Canada, speak from personal experience and those of a few American friends.

I have always managed to see a doctor the same day when it is urgent. I know of Canadians (some of the under 25 year old homeless I met when I made my documentary video for a class at University)with out any ID papers having been able to see a doc that same day for urgent matters.

One was a heroine addict who got hit by a train when trying to rescue his dog who ran out on to the track. No ID, no papers, he spent about 6 months in hospital before being sent to a rehab hospital. OK this is an extreme example when most of us are looking for a prescription for antibiotics! But many SW have no ID papers and still manage to get medical treatment here. People may complain about waiting a long time in a waiting room but that is based on the urgency of the matter as decided by the triage nurse.

Tell me that the 10% without insurance in the USA have it so good.

If only I knew...
We can easily presumes those who have no insurances are the ones without jobs or who simply can't afford it. The 10% figure seems very low for me... What's the current unemployment average in the USA these days? Of those who work, how many have employer-provided coverage? For those who don't have employer coverage, how many actually pay themself for insurance? What about those who can't get private insurance because of pre-existing conditions? What about those who get the surprise of seeing their "full insurances" doesn't cover for the condition they have? You have a certain cancer? They pay just a specific amount and that's it. You requires long term treatment? They pay only a fixed lenght and after, you're on your own...

This isn't the case in Canada. Everybody is treated, for as long as it takes, for the price it will cost, no matter who you are, it won't make a difference. I was stuck with a pneumonia a few years ago and, within about 1 hour, I was hospitalized. A friend of mine had an aggressive cancer. Within a few days from the diagnostic, he was starting treatment and he's now cancer-free since 10 years.
