Gianey will likely finish the season but I doubt he'll stay behind the bench

next year.

Who should they get?

Someone from the habs past? Roy,Savard,Demers?

Promote within? Lever,Muller,Melancon?

Former coach on the sidelines? Tortorella,Melrose,Hartley, crawford?

Top jr or ahl coach with no nhl experience?

Are you kidding?

Cross out Roy & Demers' names. Also cross out Muller & Melancon. Many claim they're a big part of the current problem with the team's woes. Muller has no experience & Melancon is a goaltending coach & many say he's not even a good one.

Tortorella & Melrose? For one, Tortorella is coaching the NY Rangers & doing a pretty good job & likely will be back next year. Melrose?? He's a joke!

You might as well throw in Scotty Bowman's name, for the matter...or Michel Bergeron's.

Your suggestions remind me of the Quebec Nordiques of 1972-73 when they named Maurice Richard as their head coach. He had no idea what he was doing & hated it, quitting after a couple of games. Later, Jacques Plante wound up behind the bench. Many ex-Nordiques still claim today that this might have been the worse decision in franchise history!

GUY CARBONNEAU !!!!!

Why? Number one, the Habs will be paying him next season anyway. So he won't cost them anything more than they're already paying him. Two, half of the players on the current roster will be gone to free agency & trades. It will be a new atmosphere & the bad apples (like Koivu) gone for good. Three, he's a very good coach & should have won the Jack Adams last season. They won't find a better coach. He's also french-canadian, speaks english fluently & he's adored by the local population & respected by the media.

If this means Gainey has to go, so be it. However, all it would take from Gainey would be a public announcement that he screwed up when he fired Carbo & everything would be forgotten.

I honestly cannot contemplate anyone else being better than Carbo. Don Lever? Come on, be serious! There's no one else. Carbo's the man. No ifs, no buts about it.

I can understand people wanting to see Carbo back, but lets face it, the coach is not the one on the ice.

Montreal needs a tough handed SOB that will rule with tyranny and fear, much like Scottie did in those famous years!

Three names come to mind: Keenan, Hitchcock, Tortorella.

How about Michel Bergeron? He wouldn't blink if he'd be offered the job.

I think Bergy is too emotional!! You need a cold hard ass!!

How about Udai Hussein? He did wonders with the Iraqi soccer team. Oh yeah, right. He's dead, i forgot. The Habs could have had some use for this prick/psycho. Keenan? Or how about Brian Sutter? I think he was a very good coach who could help quite a few teams right now.

GM is fine! We need a coach that can speak Hockey, if they want to, they can get Nadya to be the PR spokeswoman, I am sure her oral skills are up to par....

Do the canadians need a coach you bet, but they had one in Carbonneau and panic set in and they fired him. The truth off the matter is they need a whole lot more then a coach. Last year they played way over there head and came crashing back to earth getting bounced in the first round.

To see people actually buy into montreal being a legit cup contender at the start of the year was almost laughable, who the hell do they have, lets get real. Compare there lineup to a team like detroit and it is not very pretty. This team needs a complete overhaul, they are a long long way from being a true cup contender.

I rarely quote more than a few lines from a post, but i had to quote the whole thing since i couldn't have said it any better & i agree with you totally. The powerplay last year saved Montreal & when they tinkered with it by not signing Mark Streit, they were asking for trouble, even though i was the first one at the time who thought the Isles had over paid for him ($4 million +) and that the Habs did a good thing by not signing him. Streit now appears to have been a bargain for the Isles & he's played like an all-star all season long on a very bad team.

Another thing with last year's team is that the Habs won something like 8 games in a row against the Bruins. If the Bruins would have won just half of those games, the Habs would have been in pretty much the same spot they're in now.

Last year prior to the start of the season, i didn't expect much from the Habs. I figured they were worse on paper than the previous year. But they surprised the hell out of me & stood atop the standings. Well, they surprised themselves! Take away those Boston games & the high degree of success on the pp, and they might have been even worse than the team they have today.

Carbonneau is a very good coach. Last year, he overachieved with the players he had. But on top of having a great pp & quite a bit of luck (scoring tying & winning goals very late in games on a near-regular basis), he also had a rookie goalie in Carey Price who often stood on his head. But the bottom line is that Carbonneau is a very good coach who never should have been fired in the first place. Heck, even the likes of Toe Blake & Scotty Bowman would have struggled to get such a team going!

WELL not quite.....

The Habs were the Number 1 Seed in the Eastern Playoffs last year, and the Bruins (#8) pushed them to a Game 7....Habs won the 1st Rd Series 4-3.

THEN in the second round, the Habs lost to the Flyers (#6) 4 Games to 1.

I still think firing Carbo was one of the biggest mistakes Gainey made as GM. That being said, Gainey might not be around as GM if they don't make or don't do well in the playoffs. If Gainey is still here Carbo will never be back as coach ! I have heard that people would love to see Pierre McGuire as GM (actualy not a bad idea) but can he really do any better than Gainey? Attracting UFA's to a city where language is a problem for their kids who have to attend school, taxes are an issue vs everywhere else in the league and the Habs would then be in a new rebuilding phase wouldn't make the job of attracting UFA's any easier for McGuire than it was for Gainey. McGuire talks a great plan but lets face it talk is cheap.Bergy.......never ! Demers.......never! Canadiens have never recycled their coaches and I doubt they will start now. Carbo didn't have the necessary experience to handle a real rough season, it's time to give the job to a coach, not a former player. I say the Habs need to wait until the season is done, see what happens with Gainey (he may walk away) then if necessary hire a GM and let him make his choice, or if Gainey is still here (and I believe he is the best man for the job) let him make his next choice for coach.
Let's be honest about this discussion, if Gillette sells the club we may then be looking at a wholesale change of management, including Bovin.......

It's true Carbo didn't have the necessary 'coaching' experience to handle a long slump. However, that's what assistant coaches are hired for. Usually their in the 'veteran' category of coaching. Okay with Jarvis in that aspect, but i'm not so certain Muller would qualify since his only coaching experience prior to joining Carbo's team was as Queen's University hockey team coach in Kingston, Ont.

By the way, you mention it's time to give the job to a coach, not a former player. Name me 3 coaches in the NHL who weren't former hockey players?

Hitchcock, Tortorella & Clouston DID play hockey....

I like Wikipedia, but i don't rely on it for 100% accuracy of facts. Here's stuff i found during my research:

Ken Hitchcock

Ken Hitchcock was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on December 17, 1951. While growing up in western Canada, Hitchcock did as most young boys do: he played hockey. While he never excelled as a player, he found he had a mind for the game and the will to motivate players. This mind led him to coaching....

John Tortorella

He played college hockey at the University of Maine from 1978–81, along with his brother, goaltender Jim Tortorella, who now serves as head men's coach for Division III Colby College.
