What is it with the Hudson?

US Airways crash landing, the AF1 fly-over, and this latest crash between helicopter and small plane

According to news reports, there is no air traffic control in effect over the Hudson which contributes to the possibility of accidents.

That's not true. There is air traffic control over 1100 feet. Below 11000 feet it is VFR=visual flight rules. These aircraft were in VFR airspace.

The pilot of the plane is being blamed, but from what I am hearing the helicopter flew into the plane pilot's blind spot. If you look at the video which is somewhat limited because you see the paths of the two aircraft only just before impact, it looks like the helicopter flew into the plane's path.

The plane pilot reacted late because the helicopter was in his blind spot until just before impact and then it was too late. But still, preliminary reports are that the plane is to blame.

The FAA has suspended two air traffic controllers at Teterboro Airport in NJ who had passed off responsibility to Newark air traffic control which does not take affirmative steps to control aircraft that are flying at VFR but as I understand it Tetereboro possibly could have given this plane some guidance. Still with the weather conditions the accident should not have happened.

    Smuler,

I heard that report, and they also suspended the supervisor who was not in the building at the time. The other suspended air traffic controller went on the phone with his girlfriend immediately after passing off responsibility for the plane to Newark's air traffic controllers.

I am surprised they have not had more crashes in that area where you have 3 major airports all in a very close geographical area, with the Hudson in the middle of all 3.

    Hey EB

Here is the article from about 10 years ago about a plane that crashed close to my house :

    :
    http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/..._in_n_j__.html

How the fuck this plane didn't hit a house was a miracle.

He landed in the middle of a residential neighborhood....

They said the last guy out of the plane was till in his seat on fire when the emergency crews arrived

    Smuler,

In the past I also lived near a small airport and also worried about crashes in the neighborhood. Pilots are trained that if they have to crash a plane, crash it in an area where there will be the least impact on the ground in terms of hitting houses or buildings. But obviously if you have a situation where a plane is corkscrewing to the ground out of control, there will be nothing the pilot can do to control where he impacts.

I just heard on the radio a little while ago that there were audio and visual signals that were missed by the air traffic controllers at Teterboro. They are claiming that they did not see/hear the warnings but apparently their instruments are telling a different story. I think that this incident is going to prove to be a HUGE wakeup call for air traffic controllers. It seems like the 2 guys at Teterboro may soon be losing their jobs based on what I heard on CBS radio 880 am just about a half hour ago.

It's gonna take a plane hitting a school, before anybody does anything about this

    Smuler-

That plane hit a tree. It was a commercial flight for Quest Diagnostics. I can't believe those guys walked away from that crash alive, although it sounds like they both were severely burned.

A few years ago in Connecticut a plane overshot the runway and hit a car on a road beyond the runway and killed a few people. I think they installed a crash fence after that. In this case there is not much that can be done to prevent this type of crash. Crashes are going to happen. You just hope you are not on the plane or in its path when it does.
