Former Nordiques owner, mayor meet NHL commish
October 10, 2009
MONTREAL – Quebec City’s mayor and the former owner of the Quebec Nordiques met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman Friday in New York City, the French-language television network LCN has reported.
According to the report, Mayor Régis Labeaume and Marcel Aubut discussed the possibility of Quebec City getting a new NHL team.
The meeting took place as rumours are swirling about a new arena to be built to replace the old Colisée, where the Quebec Nordiques played from the time they were established in the World Hockey Association in 1972 until the franchise was sold and moved to Colorado in 1995. At the time, Aubut wanted the provincial government to chip in the funds needed to build a new arena.
When pressed by several reporters today, Labeaume said the meeting was very positive, and that he could not have expected better, but did not elaborate.
Labeaume said he would give more details in the coming days.
Bettman has said that building a new arena would be a key to establishing a new franchise in Quebec City.
LCN reported an announcement either about the arena or a new NHL franchise could come next week.
I look forward to seeing the rivalry heat up between Montreal and Quebec again.

I figure the odds of this happening are good. There presently are too many teams in the south with attendance problems: both Florida teams, Atlanta, Nashville & Phoenix. Add the Islanders to the mix. These teams will eventually either fold or have to be moved to hockey markets. Bettman's plan to commercialize the game by putting NHL franchises in non-hockey markets in order to stimulate more advertising revenue & a major tv network contract has backfired. The NHLPA has to foot the bill for those teams' money losses & they won't put up for it anymore if the league continues to be stubborn in keeping teams in money-losing markets. I see teams in places like Seattle/Portland, Winnipeg & Quebec City. Some say Kansas City is next. Possibly in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. But i don't see a team in Hamilton (too close to both Buffalo & Toronto....having a team there would severely damage the Sabres). Some say two teams in Ontario is enough (Ottawa & Toronto). However, i see Ottawa as being more part of Quebec than Ontario. It's located on the Ontario/Quebec border & less than two hours from Montreal (Ottawa is about 4-5 hours from Toronto). For example, if you're in Ottawa, you look across the Ottawa River & you can see Gatineau, Quebec. Many people working or studying in Ottawa live in Gatineau (where the cost of living is much cheaper than in Ottawa). So the geographical rivalry really is Ottawa/Mtl than Ottawa/Toronto.

I don't know amazona, some teams in the NHL invested ridiculous amounts of money for high cost players and got low performance from them ie: money is not necessarily the answer, it's 10% talent, and 90% perspiration, ie: what's important is: elan, morale, discilpline, identity, raw desire to win, a Quebec player in a Nordique uniform would have these qualities, besides Quebec has money, and is a better market than it was in the early nineties. I want to see Celine Dion do the national anthem there again.

The problem with Quebec City is that the revenue flow from the financial/corporate market is small as compared to many other NHL teams. They also don't have an arena which would be required to accomodate an NHL team, but even if they do build one, who will fill up the corporate boxes, which is how many teams make the most attendance revenue?

Very true, Quebec City is a civil servant town where the provincial government is by far the largest employer. Also, the last year the Nordiques were in town, they did sell out every night (approx. 16,000 seats) but only 3,500 were to season ticket holders.

However, the timing has never been better to try because a new facility in Quebec City will be announced shortly with 20,014 seats and 128 corporate boxes that will be paid mostly with public funds, something the public were against in the 90's. The government just helped the Molson brothers buy the Habs so again public sentiment is on any new owner's side. Several U.S. teams are in markets that will never embrace hockey and are just dieing to relocate. Betteman's dream of a big U.S. network TV contract will never happen, the current one is with Versus which most of the country can't get now that DirecTV has dumped the channel. Lastly, the recession has hit the U.S. much harder the Canada making these teams bleed even more than usual. In fact, the recession has hardly even touched Quebec City so far.

The big challenge will be to see how long people will support a team which will likely never win (we're not Toronto :D) since they will have to maintain one of the smaller budgets in the league. The current league salary average is $54.4 million US with 10 teams under that amount ranging from $40.5 - $50.3 million. (NAS, NYI, PHX, CLB, DAL, TB, LA, COL, ATL,FLA) If you look at them none will be winning anything any time soon. The new team would have to sell 128 corporate boxes at $75,000 each and 18,000 seats at an average of $60 to generate just about $55 million CDN or approx $50 million U.S at current exchange just to be in Florida Panther territory. Then you cross your fingers and hope the dollar doesn't go back down 35% to 1990's levels. Again a very daunting task.

That being said, If we do get another team I will support it just like I did the Nords by buying a pair of season tickets and will enjoy seeing the greatest franchise in hockey history visit my town 3 or 4 times a year. :D

Me also, and not just the rivalry but i personally would love a good excuse to go back to Quebec City, i fell in love with that place when i was going there on weekends, so much culture with a unbelievable european flare..... i miss it, and going to a Hockey game would be my excuse to go back ...... GO NORDS GO!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhh so much nicer ring to it than the other team in quebec.....(go remparts go) :D

they do need a new home before anything else tho, the Colisee' is horribly old and not up to standards of todays NHL Arenas.......

http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/2010wintergames/Quebec+Charest+believes/2325127/story.html

Montrealgazette said:
QUEBEC CITY — Quebec Premier Jean Charest said he is confident a NHL team will return to Quebec City after discussing the matter with Gary Bettman.
Charest told newspaper Le Journal de Quebec during a mission in Moscow, Russia, he found the NHL commissioner "sincere" when he spoke with him last Friday during a special hockey game for the Montreal Canadiens' centenary.
"I talked to him about the possibility of getting a team in Quebec City and I found his reaction very encouraging. He seemed very open," Charest noted.
The premier stressed "the planets are aligned" to make such a move profitable.
"It is going to happen," he said of a franchise return to replace the Nordiques — 15 years after they left the city.
Charest told Bettman Quebec City is likely to get a new NHL-sized arena to replace the current and obsolete Colisee.
He added the move of luring back a NHL team is part of a broader plan to bring the Winter Olympics to Quebec City.
The only two problems here is that the actors involved are Bettman and Charest, if it were anyone else, then yes, the Nordiques are coming with 100% certainty.

I can't see this happening anytime soon, until an arena is built. Even though it would be the logical move, Quebec getting a relocated team would be the answer. At least ten current franchises are struggling with attendance. Last night, i was watching the Edmonton/Tampa game & the arena was empty. Hockey simply isn't a sport that's going to thrive in Florida! The same goes with most of the other sun belt teams. It's like we'd be starting a beach volleyball league in the arctic!! Do you think anyone will bother going?

But the NHL rarely does the rational thing. Right now, it figures it'll make a fortune by expanding instead of relocating. Hundreds of millions of $$ are awaiting them in places such as southern Ontario, QC & possibly Winnipeg. Maybe Seattle/Portland, who knows. By relocating, they'd be turning their backs on those potential revenues gained from granting new franchises. What will happen with the current struggling franchises? Who knows. The NHL keeps lying about attendance figures & the state of the economy for most of these franchises. It's a huge mess, and it will get bigger.

As for Quebec City, i'm not sure the city is big enough and/or has the corporate financing available to support an NHL team. Will they be able to sell most of their private boxes? I hope so, but doubt it. Considering today's economic state, will the arena be able to reach its full capacity in attendance on a regular basis?

I hope that the Quebec City rumor becomes a realization

I think the Islanders will move to KC.. to pair in the new arena with an NBA franchise ?

Why Portland/ Seattle doesn;t have a franchise is beyond me

This is great news; Quebec can easily support 2 losing teams...

At least there's still the Ottawa/Gatineau Senators, which i consider as much a Quebec-based team as one from Ontario.

L'annee du centennaire a ete un veritable desastre!

I wonder what Quebec's team will be named (if they ever wind up with one)? Les Nordiques? Here's my choice: Le National de Quebec!
