As they say on the radio: It's hard to beat Pete's meat.

The first time I heard that I cracked up. Poor Pete - if he never gets his meat beaten.

If you find yourself on the south shore, the best smoked meat I've found is at Teddys in St.Hubert on Cousineau. It's right off the 116 and they have decent fries and good prices. They are known for their half-mile high smoked meat sandwich. Must have a web site but I couldn't find it. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

Found the site for Smokemeat Pete though! Really have to check them out one day. Anyone up for a smoked meat GT?

Reuben's Deli

Everyone knows my favorite place to eat....Reuben's Deli. It's also my favorite smoked meat, although i'll admit i've never been at Schwartz (i can't stand lineups!). Queen Elizabeth II herself asked to eat at the famous Reuben's during one of her visit to Montreal.

Smoke meat place suggestion. I go to a place on St. Laurent blvd near Pine. It is a small charcuterie called Slovainias. The place sells could cuts by the kg. but they also have a few stools and you could eat there or take out a smoked meat sandwich. For $3.50 you get a stack of smoke meat on rye bread about 4 inches high.

Reuben or Schwarts

I have to go with either Reuben or Schwarts to be the best.
I find the Pete's is sometime too greasy.

But I long for the days of Adam's Restaurant on Bld Lasalle near Shevchenko, that was the best place.

Some of teh La Belle Province style chain restos make a good smoked meat sandwhich, but it depends entirely on who you get behind the coounter on any given day. Some of them know how to slice em up and some don't. If you want lean, you should get lean, etc. The good slicers know how to serve em up.

Had one there yesterday. Not bad but no comparison to any of the real specialists. The worst thing about it was that it was sliced way too thick. I mean the slices were almost a quarter inch thick and I really prefer my smoked meat sliced very thin, I find it makes a big difference in the taste. Next time I'll just stick to a couple of dogs and a poutine. ;)

Oh man!!! Now you're bringing back some memories! Adam's was on the corner of 6th and Lasalle if I remember correctly and I lived not too far from there on 1st. They had fantastic smoked meat and great fries and tangy gravy to go with them. Haven't thought about that place in years and now I can almost taste it!!

Where I belong.
I'm all about Schwartz's, though I'll happily cross the street to The Main rather than wait in line. I do like the ambiance in The Main. No matter what time of day it is, the crowd in there always looks like it's three in the morning.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Lester's. I've been by there a number of times, but it seems it's always with the same friend and she doesn't like smoked meat so we've never gone in.

Schwartz's

My vote goes to Schwartz's smoked meat. None finer.
The original recipe is from Romanian Jews who emigrated to Montreal way back.

Abe's on St.Jean in the West Island is pretty decent, I believe the owners were formerly at Schwartz's, similar style recipe and cut.

I checked: smoked meat is NOT diet food. :eek:But you can always go into denial when smoke meat withdrawl hits!:D

Abe's is owned and run by the other son, Pete's brother, Main Deli family.

Like many on this board I like Reuben's and Schwartz.

I'm suprised to see that nobody mentioned Ben's. Oups...it doesn't exist anymore.

Don't know if Wilensky (34 Av Fairmount) is still open.

Nobody mentioned Jarry Smoked Meat, 6544 Jarry.

Smoked meat to die for

A juicy hot smoked meat sandwich, kosher pickle, greasy fries and a cherry coke.....best in the west end is Abie`s on St.Jean Rd .
It`ll kill you .....but its to die for.
