A few years ago in Connecticut a coyote attached a customer at one of the McDonald's on I-95. It turned out that employees of that McDonald's had been regularly feeding the coyote, and it lost its fear of humans. After an investigation, McDonald's later fired those employees. The attacked customer survived with minor bite wounds, and had to get a rabies shot although I don't believe the coyote turned out to be rabid. It was aggressive and had lost its fear of humans.

Poor coyote! Imagine having to spend an entire day attached to a McDonald's restaurant, having to eat that crap all day long!

Seriously, though...i've had coyotes near my backyard for the past couple of years & never imagined that they actually attacked people. Now i'll be more vigilant.

If only I knew...
Coyotes are wild animals. Even if they look like dogs, they are not so, if somebody start teasing them, threaten them or push them in a corner, they'll react like a coyote, not like a dog.

Doc, I don't think you'll have problems, as long as nobody start considering them domesticated. If you have kids, ensure they know wild animals aren't pets or toys.

Nobody will ever know what triggered the attack on that poor girl. Maybe she tried to attract them because "they were so cute"? Maybe she surprised them? Maybe they just figured she looked appetizing...

Or maybe they thought she was a road runner?

A couple years a go, a girl jogging (in a provincial park I think) up north in Quebec was killed by a bear.

After the investigation apparently there was no reason from the bear to attack her in the way it did other than because she was in her 'period' and the bear could smell her as being an animal 'wounded'.

The best advice I had from park rangers is like Kepler said... never ever go hiking alone.

I met a guy once who told me that in the states they had (they might still have) a big problem with dogs that people bring to the woods to get rid of them. If you meet them, they still look like dogs but they've become wild and dangerous and often they'll be in groups but unlike the wolves; they will attack no matter what since they don't know how to feed themselves like wolves do.

Hello all,

Coyotes kill woman on hike in Canadian park

Two coyotes attacked a promising young musician as she was hiking alone in a national park in eastern Canada, and authorities said she died Wednesday of her injuries.

The victim was identified as Taylor Mitchell, 19, a singer-songwriter from Toronto who was touring to promote her new album on the East Coast.

She was hiking solo on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia on Tuesday when the attack occurred. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Coyotes, which also are known as prairie wolves, are found from Central America to the United States and Canada.

Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said coyote attacks are extremely rare because the animals are usually shy.

We get to feeling so comfortable in the modern world at times, despite all the crime, that we forget there are still "wild things"...dangerous wild animals out there. I saw this story in the Boston Herald yesterday morning. Of all possibilities we probably feel as safe from wild animals as any other possibility. Something like this seems so primitive and removed from out times, like being thrown back to the pioneer days in the wilderness or the Middle Ages. How tragic for any person to die like this. We should all be reminded that nature is alive, well, and still a threat in such ways...and always trying to replace us as quickly as we have sought to dominate it.

Sympathies,

Merlot

I remember reading about that attack. The girl was actually training for the Canadian Olympic team and had headphones on and did not hear the bear coming, but it attacked her from behind, grabbed her by the neck and snapped it. The bear may have been attracted by the menstrual odor (I have read women are more likely to be attacked by sharks smelling blood as well), she never heard it coming because she was jogging and listening to music, plus it came from behind, so she never saw it either.
