where on this list have you lived? care to compare them? i'll start:

grew up in #3, san francisco. the best combination for all around long term living: food, weather, cultural & intellectual diversity, goods & services, entertainment.

lived in # 4, london, for 2 years. great place w/ high energy. the 'city' has everything, but food quality & value sucks.

lived in # 6, new york, for 2 years. has everything of everything... 'worst to world class quality' of food/goods & services/culture/entertainment.

lived in #8, hong kong, for 2.5 years. pure energy, but lacking in diversity of culture & thought. great strategic location for traveling around the 'left' side of the world.

currently in #20, montreal, for 2.5 years & counting. love the easy going euro pace & attitude. not crowded (compared to the others). bottom line? it's all about the girls.

obligatory hypothetical ?'n... if i had to live in one of them for the rest of my life how would i rank them?

1. san francsico
2. montreal
3. new york
4. london
5. hong kong

and then there are those cities you keep going back to for vacations, but that's another story entirely.

Pardon my francais, but what the %^%$% was the criteria in the selection?

Looks to me that the writer just phone the list in w/o any research.

Any list must include cities where sex (that's what really men care about) is readily available- therefore I would cross out all the yanke doodle cities.

Where is Rio, Sao Paolo, Banckok, Amsterdam,Dubai, etc..... ?

It is all subjective; these kinds of things always are.

Only YOU can know what is the best city for YOU. Sex is important to you, as for many of us; but also to consider are taxes, real estate value, crime rates, education, jobs, etc.

And even then, most people don't stray from their hometown, and if they do, it's for work, and they don't have much choice as to where they go.

If you are very rich, or have skills that are universally in demand, or just plain lucky, you can go globe-trotting and experience each city.

Everyone else can only judge according to stereotypes, and limited recreational visits.

if you bothered to read the front page you would know. of course there's no perfect criteria, but you're asking a ?'n that has been answered by the article.

the travel bug in me is fueled by a t-shirt i bought a long time ago: "walking a million miles to undiscover the known." to me that means move your ass over there for a couple of years and experience what it's really like. i've stayed in quite a few other cities for 6+ months at a time, but i think you need to live in a place for at least 2 years to understand it like a native. more time is needed if a job gets in the way... :p

exactly.
