I finally picked myself up a Blu-ray home theater setup and I was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions of must have movies on Blu-ray? I'm looking for movies that really show the difference between BR and regular DVD, not really concerned if the movie is a work of art or not. I have borrowed a number of movies from a friend including the two latest Batman movies...the Dark Knight is great on BR, especially the sections shot in IMAX..., both Fantastic Four, both Hellboy flicks and a few others that I'm working my way through.

They have the James Bond sets on special at Futureshop and I'll probably pick up a couple of them just because I love old Bond movies but it pisses me off that they don't have a set of just the Connery films.

If anyone has some suggestions they would really be appreciated!

I've been weary of being one of these. I'm afraid that once i start watching movies in blu-ray, i'll want to throw away my 1000+ dvd collection.

I don't see any reason to replace most of the movies in my collection because the blu-ray player does a great job of upscaling. But I'm watching Hellboy right now and it's incredible the difference between DVD and Blu-ray and for some favorite movies, I might just upgrade if the difference is worth it or a BR version is on sale for a great price. Not to mention that the Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD surround sound are amazing and I can't wait for Almost Famous to be released on BR! My neighbours are really going to hate me soon. :p

But I've bought my last standard DVD other than the odd boxset that will most likely never be transferred to BR, like Babylon 5 that is on sale for 19.95 a season at Best Buy right now.

Trust me Doc, if you're a movie fan and you have a high def television you owe it to yourself to pick up a Blu-ray player.

I can't wait for Almost Famous to be released on BR!

Techman this title was released on Blu-ray in 2008 and has since been discontinued from production. If you want it though Amazon.com still has 4 new copies (Extended Edition) available from associated sellers.

http://www.amazon.com/Almost-Famous...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262098203&sr=8-1

I've never seen this film but ordered one on December 21 for $35.06 US shipped after you and Jessy recommended it in another thread. I expect to receive it this week and will watch it over the weekend if I do, and will come back here to let you know how it looks and sounds.

Techman,
You are reminding me how I should jump into that badwagon asap.
I still have the old dvds:eek:
The thing is also to think about upgrading the TV too (I have an old non HDTV one) to an HDTV one so that the whole kit is fully digitalized:D
Best wishes to you and yours!

Thanks for the info G1G! I never realized it had already been released and then discontinued. I think you'll really enjoy the movie and can't wait to see what you thought of it!

Monk, I bought a 50" Samsung Plasma about two months ago and that's what pushed me into the Blu-ray arena. Once you go digital you'll wonder why it took you so long to make the jump. I picked up a LG Blu-ray home theater in a box...basically an all in one surround sound system and blu-ray player...and it's just amazing. I did a lot of research on the net before making my choices and I'm really satisfied with the units I purchased. My home theater also connects directly to the net and I can access Youtube and watch the videos on my plasma. It's a blast. I would recommend moving up to any movie fan, especially those who like to watch the bonus features.

Hey Techie, I was thinking a bit about the choice of Blu-Ray for a player...If you are to purchase films that take full advantage of HD quality, then you really should pick some films that have a large-scale vision to them. What I mean is, to me it feels like a waste of money if you buy Blu-Ray versions of, say, Woody Allen films, or Sandra Bullock rom-coms.

Selections such as the recent King Kong, the original Planet of the Apes, The original Godfather, Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (in fact, most of James Cameron's films), Superman:the Movie, and others of that ilk are more taylor-made for the advantages of Blu-Ray (amazing visuals and sounds, and if we're lucky an outstanding soundtrack a la John Williams' Superman score).

Hey Shijak! I agree with you for the most part. In the last few days I've watched The Dark Knight, Fantastic 4, Superman Returns, Ironman and Hellboy. The only one that failed to impress was Superman which I found to be little better than an upscaled DVD. Hellboy was amazing quality followed closely by Dark Knight and the other movies. I'm just about to hit Futureshop to pick up a couple of James Bond sets on sale and see what else I can find.

I'm still curious about what a dramatic film will be like on blu-ray, especially the Coppola restoration of the Godfather but it was out of stock at all the stores I tried yesterday. I also want to check out a couple of films like After the Sunset with Salma Hayek and Into the Blue with Jessica Alba to check out the beautiful 'scenery' :p

I recently purchased a classic in Blue Ray, "The Warriors". The thing that amazed me was the film was shot in the 70's (I think, if not early 80's) but you could really see all of the details that normal dvd's leave out. It made their trip bopping home from the Bronx that much more enjoyable. As for recent films, you can't go wrong with the new Transformer movie, that was top notch. Also, for you animal lovers try watching the Planet Earth series, unbelievable.

Welcome to Blu-land. I love this format. Just be warned that there is a bad trend with some disc producers who apply DVNR (Digital Video Noise Reduction) in a stupid attempt to eradicate film grain from transfers, and these discs look terrible and have no high frequency detail. The worst offenders to date are Patton, Dark City and Good The Bad and The Ugly. A good place to check out a transfer before you buy is www.blu-ray.com . Their reviews feature screen grabs that let you see what a transfer looks like.

If your buying the Bonds, wait until you see how terrific Dr No looks. Better than any print that I have seen anywhere.

Well I just picked up Bond sets 1 and 2 for 24.99 each, regular price is 61.99 so it was a good deal. Also grabbed Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 for 6.99 each and Basic Instinct for 7.99. Tons of extras on the Bond sets so that should keep me busy for a while.

My favourite site for DVD or Blu-ray reviews is www.thedigitalbits.com which is one of the oldest and most respected review sites on the web for anything to do with home video.

Now I'm off to meet a gf and see Sherlock Holmes.

Paul Verhoeven films are also a "must get" as far as Blu-Ray goes: Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers contain some serious visual "bang" for your buck.

In fact, collecting DVDs by director is a tactic I sometimes use to fill out a collection: select a personal favorite director, scan IMDB for outstanding and most-desired films, then zip out to store and buy,buy,buy...
I did this years ago for Quentin Tarantino (sadly, I don't think I'll get inglorious bastards), Frank Darabont (all is go for Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile, ixnay on the Mist and The Majestic).

You might want to at least have a look at this, but for their recent Blu-Ray release, the original Star Trek series got a massive facelift, where all space shots and many FX shots were completely redone with modern computer CGI, and amped up the colour and brightness on all character shots. They only have expensive box sets for now, but there are SOME favorite episodes whose FX shots that I've seen on Youtube that are pretty amazing. If you're any kind of aficionado, you might want to borrow a few discs and catch a look.

I was thinking of the Star Trek Original series but the prices are insane. It has to be the highest priced per season box set on the market and there's no way I'll spend that kind of money on it. That one will just be a download for me like most television series. I downloaded the entire Babylon 5 series and now that it's on sale for a reasonable $19.95/season I will be buying them.

You didn't like the Mist? It wasn't too bad if you ignore the stupid ending that was changed from the original story. Other than that, it was much better than I expected. I'm surprised that you didn't like Basterds either as it's probably the only Tarantino film that I've really liked.

Star Trek, like StarWars are pretty much the only 2 movie intellectual properties that have a sufficient rabid fan base willing to gobble up most anything offered up on the market (I know a few of these "fans"), so the studios are completely secure at keeping their prices up at insane levels...Fortunately, the Remastered Star Trek series IS playing on the SPACE channel in mid-afternoons so you don't have to pay those prices to catch some of those episodes. While the vast majority of the 1960's series had very few outerspace FX shots, my favorite episode ever (the Doomsday Machine) had quite a few of them and I watched it recently and it looks GREAAAAT!

Didn't say I didn't like the Mist, nor Inglorious Basterds (I found Mist to be just OK), I've seen each once but didn't like them enough to get me to buy them on DVD for repeated viewings.
