From TSN:

The Montreal Canadiens have called a news conference for 4pm et/1pm pt where president Pierre Boivin will make 'an important announcement regarding the club's hockey management.

Is this the end of Gainey and if so who will replace him? Or will they announce a contract extension for Boring Bob?

Title changed.

Latest reports are that Gainey has resigned and will be replaced by Pierre Gauthier as interim GM.

classy all the way

Bob has had a tough couple of years in dealing with personal events outside of the game – I can’t imagine. I hope its not a health issue either. All the best Bob!

In Bob we trust, always

Will the leafs get lucky again? They got lucky the first time when Komi went out for the season. If Burkie left, they'd REALLY hit the jackpot - only problem for leaf fans is that Burkie doesn't have the balls to leave.

Gainey quits on sad-sack Habs team

Even 'Boring' Bob Gainey had enough!! He's quit as Habs GM (or pretended to be) and has been replaced by another "life-of-the-party", the very dull Pierre Gauthier, who was fired in Anaheim & Ottawa. According to all sources close to both men, Gauthier is even more boring than Bob Gainey, which is extremely difficult to believe. As one Mtl media personality said tonight "unfortunately, we're not getting a Brian Burke, we're getting an even less charismatic GM than even Bob Gainey ever was."

According to Gainey, he had been planning his exit since last December. Gainey should be ashamed of himself, quitting on the team he had a large hand in destroying, right in the middle of this awful season.

Word around Mtl tonight is that Gainey's illegitimate son, Carey Price, was so saddened by the news that he headed to the CN station near the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, jumped in front of an oncoming train, but unfortunately for him, the train went right between his legs, meaning that he'll likely be expected to be between the pipes for the team's next game. Sometimes, nothing seems to go right!

HABS REALLY SUCK !!!

more irrelevant drivel from ass clown #1

A lot of chirping from bitter Leaf fans while their sad sack franchise sits in 29th place in the league, has missed the playoffs in four straight seasons and hasn’t had so much as a sniff of the Stanley Cup finals in 43 years. Toronto has had 43 seasons to turn it around – how has that worked out for you so far? Win a few cups them come back here and tell me how good your team is – better yet, just make the playoffs, once …

The firing is far too late. Gainey has crippled the team for years to come in donating great, large contracts for mediocre, small athletes.

Hard to disagree with you. I compare Gainey's reign in Montreal similar to the John Ferguson Jr. reign in Toronto. The damages they've done to those two historical franchises will be comparable to one another for years to come.

Gainey's time in Mtl was an absolute bust. Sadly for the Mtl franchise, i don't see Pierre Gauthier turning out any better since he was also behind many of the questionable moves Gainey has been held responsible for over the past couple of years.

You forgot to add our scapegoat teams:

San Jose: 59 games played, 87 points, 39-11-9 record, 1st in the Western Conference, 8-1-1 in their last 10.
Detroit: 58 games played, 64 points, 27-21-10 record, 9th in the Western Conference, 3-5-2 in their last 10.

Go Sharks!! :D

Maybe...or maybe not. I've heard several respected professional hockey analysts express the opinion that Gainey's exit was a classy one well-timed to protect his working associates. Choose your own opinion, but there are at least two possible interpretations..

Again, a misuse of "scapegoat". And, for what it's worth, I always root for the Wings, who have not yet been eliminated from playoff contention..unlike another team I can think of. Meanwhile, I don't care about the Sharks one way or another (although it WOULD be really cool to see them finally win a Cup after ditching that obnoxious loser Ron Wilson). But I say..."Go Canes Go" and "Go Oilers Go"...put those leafs RIGHT in the cellar where they belong!

Very amusing Doc - well done! Now, just to clarify, would that be the SAME Carey Price that you recently hoped would be going to Toronto? Or, would it be the SAME Carey Price that earlier this season you were saying was singlehandedly winning games for the habs when they were constantly being outplayed by "better" (ha ha) teams such as the leafs?

Well yes maybe Brian Burke is "charismatic" - that IS, if we define "charismatic" as "loud, rude, arrogant and obnoxious".

sounds more like you Ms. Cairo, but you forgot a few things, so add to that, puppet, lame, clueless, dense, blowhard, and most importantly one who has less hockey sense than Bob Gainey did, now thats bad my man.,, really bad , HA!

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! Excellent post Doc! ... Cairos real team just lost their GM and will be lucky to even make the playoffs, and as anon_vlad points out, the scabs are crippled for the next several years by the salary cap, but hey, Mrs. C still has his "other" team ....wink wink

again, "as usual" you have no idea what your talking about, you have a scapegoat team for fear of cheering for the scabs as they have sucked horribly when so much hype was for them to be cup winners within the last 6 years of a 5 yr plan, you dont fool anyone but maybe yourself, and since the "dead things" wont win jack this year, are you gonna follow your brothers in here and continue being a bandwagon fan by hiding when the scabs lose? real fans cheer for one team, win or lose and DO NOT HIDE when they lose, unlike the majority of scab fans , including you......try this for size since the "dead things" wont be winning the cup this year, GO CAPS GO!!!! cmon, i know you can root for them, afterall it is so easy to do right? BWHAHAHHA!
