Hotel Advice - Omni Mont-Royal...?

Hello Everyone,

In the never ending search of most value for the dollar (or in this case the loonie) in the 4* plus range I am considering the Omni for an up coming stay in Montreal. I have done the usual searches and perused the threads with info and now I am interested in your recent experiences with this hotel. The website shows some suites for pretty reasonable rates with advance special price rates. Use of their frequent stayer program makes it an intriguing option.

I went to the Omni and don't understand how it can be considered a 4 stars. I would rate it as a 3 stars.

The hotel is badly in need of renovations and has been for years. There are several nice aspects, like free wireless which is not offered at the other 4 stars, good sized rooms, phones in the bathroom (on the wall next to the toilet), loveseats, and you can park in a lot across the street on Metcalfe for a reasonable daily rate. I personally do not mind this hotel but would agree with Ariane that the rooms are not modern or renovated and for this reason are not worthy of 4 star rating at this time. That is the main problem with this hotel - the renovations are about 7 years overdue but Omni still has not made them.

One other annoying feature to the rooms is wooden shutters on the windows near the bed that do not shut out all light when closed, thus if you need a totally dark room with no light creeping in in the morning, you are shit out of luck. On the other hand, there are mirrors adjacent to the beds which can be used to maximize your viewing pleasure during sex depending on the position you choose.

If you stay there request a room on a high floor facing south, otherwise you will hear traffic noise from Sherbrooke all night.

the hotel has been for sale for a couple of years. i guess they don't think they'll get a good r.o.i. by renovating it.

I like the place for many of the reasons that EB gave. There are a few other marginal benefits that I personally like that EB didn't mention. They have wine glasses in the rooms, robes, and keys are not required to work the elevators. The work out room is about the nicest I have seen in Montreal and they have a nice pool as well.

It is a little old and could use some remodeling but it is in no way decrepit. It is also a little closer to Crescent st then some of the other hotels I tend to stay at. It is a little shorter walk to the restaurants there.

Thanks for the input so far.

So I am hearing adequate but in need of renovation; 4 star price yet 3 star appearance. Would you guys say it is comparable to say the Hyatt Regency?

I have stayed many times at the Hyatt (including last week) and many times at the Omni. The Omni has a better location and free Internet, and slightly larger rooms. It also has an excellent gym as previously noted, which includes a steam room and sauna. The Hyatt is better in all other respects. It sits over a shopping mall (and food court) and the rooms are much more modern and up to date. I don't mind the Omni but I prefer the Hyatt. As I noted elsewhere the reason the Hyatt is going more cheaply right now is due to construction in front of the hotel which is likely hurting their business.

Hello Beav,

Thanks again. Yeah I have stayed at the Hyatt so I have a good idea about it and was just trying to gauge the Omni against it.
Any thoughts or experiences with the Intercontinental or the Marriott? Anyone?

Hotel Intercontinental

The Intercontinental is superior to both the Hyatt and Omni as far as quality of the rooms. The layout of the hotel is a bit odd, and its location is not great unless you plan to spend a lot of time in Old Montreal. The Intercon also charges a whopping $14.99 per day for wireless Internet, which is a ripoff. I have also found that their cleaning staff is slow which can delay check in. I was not allowed to check in until 5 pm one time despite the 3 pm guarantee. They gave me 2 free drink coupons to appease me, which is little appeasement when all it gets you is a cup of coffee or a ginger ale. Don't even consider paying for drinks in their lounge as it is a big time, major rip off in there.

Ask Special K about the Intercon's customer service.

I prefer the Hyatt to the Intercontinental.

I've stayed at the Omni many times over the last 5 or 6 years. Mind you, FWIW, I normally stay there in a larger suite. But I have always enjoyed my stays there and consider it very good value.

Sorry for the late response Jman, I just saw this thread. I'm actually not sure what Beav's referring to, maybe you can refresh my terrible memory Beav? Did I encounter bad customer service at the Intercon and am not able to recall it?

The I-C is okay, but it's not my cup of tea. For me, location is extremely important when i go to Mtl. Which is why i prefer staying closer to downtown, such as at the Sheraton, Vogue, Omni or HDLM. The Hyatt is okay, but not my favorite mostly because of its location and the fact it's a hassle just to get to your room. I don't mind it during winter since you can stay inside and have everything you need at the nearby shopping center below the hotel. Among the first 4 i mentionned, my favorites are the Vogue & HDLM. The Omni comes next because it has the best spa in all of Mtl's hotels (supposedly) and the rooms are large and comfortable...and have a sofa, which i like. The only negative is that the furniture is a bit outdated, but it's no big deal.

On the other hand, when i'm at the Vogue or the Omni, they know my name, have a good idea what i'm up to.....and who i saw.
