Montreal Restaurant Thread

A few months ago, I deleted about 1,000 posts and received a large number of complaints, by PM, about the deletion of the Montreal Restaurant Thread which I had started. Due to the outcry, I have decided to start a new Montreal Restaurant Thread, with my most recent culinary experiences in Montreal. Here goes:

CHAO PHRAYA: (50 Laurier west, near St-Laurent) : This new and trendy Thai restaurant was my greatest new find. Unfortunately, it’s way outside of the downtown core, located near what I understand to be the Hasidic Jewish sector of the city. My date and I went by taxi, and ordered a number of dishes, the most satisfying of which were the Thai dumplings with peanut sauce, Beef and Shallots in chili sauce, Fried Tofu with peanut sauce, Duck salad and tapioca pudding. Prices were reasonable for this level of Thai cuisine. I highly recommend.

RUBY ROUGE (1008 Clark, Chinatown) : I first ate at this dim sum restaurant well over 2 years ago. I noticed that they are still in business, always a good sign in the ever competitive Montreal restaurant market. The dim sum was pretty good, although I had a problem with the dumpling casings falling off as I tried to dip them in my favorite sauces, which is very frustrating and irritating if you are eating with chopsticks.

REUBENS (1116 St. Catherine Street): I previously had eaten a good breakfast here so I went back to try Stripper Lover’s acclaimed Montreal bagels with cream cheese and lox. The Montreal bagel I got here was like the other disappointing bagels I have had elsewhere in Montreal - small, dense, and seemingly not up for the task. I was reminded of the old Wendy’s commercial slogan, “Where’s the beef?”

RESTAURANT LO STIVALE (Rue de la Montagne, near Katsura): This classy looking Italian restaurant has a very nice and romantic ambience, but the food is average at best. I took a date here and when all was said and done, with tax, paid $135. That is totally unacceptable for average food.

MIKASA (Peel, between Sherbrooke and de Maissoneuve): I have been here many times, but I have learned that you only go here to eat the sushi. All of the traditional Japanese dishes on the menu are mediocre, but they do a very nice job with the sushi.

KOJAX (Complex Desjardins): No trip to Montreal is really complete unless you have been Kojaxed. To get Kojaxed, order the souvlaki sandwich with extra tzaziki sauce, with raw onions and tomatoes, but never get Kojaxed within the 24 hours preceding a date.

As a Chinese food lover, I will second the reco on Ruby Rouge.

Another Chinese restaurant that Chinese people really like is Restaurant Beijing, at 92 La Gauchetiere West, 514-861-2003. Beijing is open until 3:00 AM and the prices are reasonable. The owner and his wife are originally from HK. Even though I only visit Montréal 3x / year, they always recognize me.

For fairly authentic Japanese food, the Sakura Garden Restaurant at 2114 de la Montagne, 514-288-9122, is quite nice. They could use some renovations but it's got something great going for it: the waitresses are mostly older Japanese women, very courteous and polite in the old school way. I've been looking for a restaurant with ambiance like this in a lot of cities in North America and Sakura Garden is the only one.

For French food, Laloux at 250 des Pins Ave East, 514-287-9127, is a wonderful 4-5 star restaurant with affordable prices. If this place were in New York City the cost would be triple and people would rave about it. Maybe for Montréal it's just average, but I love it.

EB - I haven't enjoyed Reubens since they renovated back a couple of years ago.

I third the comments on Ruby Rouge.

I did not eat there this year but I enjoyed Restaurant Bis which I believe is on de la Montagne.

This year we ate at a steakhouse that is south of the Hotel Europa ( will have to come back with the name). Very good for beef.

Lawless,

If Reubens is for tourists why don't they serve New York style bagels so I can have myself a true breakfast?

Slickrick,

I have been to Ristorante Bis but not since summer 2002 and at that time they were serving very good pasta dishes. I found it to be reasonably priced for the level of cuisine that was being served.

LE JARDIN DE PANOS (on Duluth): It is a Greek restaurant. The food is great and the price too. It has received good reviews also throughout the years.

Lawless,

If you took some of those bagels down to Carnegie Deli in New York City they would throw you out on your ass through the front door while yelling "get dat shit outtttta here!" You would be treated like Kramer was by the Soup Nazi! No bagels for you!

I've never had the opportunity to taste NY bagels but if your in Montreal you should give Fairmount Bagel and St-Viateur bagel a try. Located on Villeneuve St between St-laurent and Parc Ave, Fairmount Bagel is opened 24 hours

Hey EB, watch your saying. Kramer was always well taking care off by Soup Nazi!

As for the "real" Montreal bagel it has a reputation that you would never be able to destroy my friend.

Beauty's is a jetset spot. You can meet stars there from the english world. And it's also very popular among the jewish community.

***************

You have old fashion SMOKE MEAT and commercial style out there.

SCHWARTZ old fashion SM is the one with the reputation but I don't like it because it's to salty.

I prefer the old fashion one from MAIN STEAK HOUSE accross the street on st-laurent, very cheap dinning and everything is on charcoal. This joint looks like a cafeteria, so if your looking to impress your guest, forget about it. You also got to try their charcoal steak.

and the old fashion one from LESTERS on bernard avenue.

It's noon and I'm going for a smoke meat sandwich right now!

Smoked Meat

I previously told the story about my experience with smoked meat at Schwartz's. The manager overheard me say it tasted like corned beef and got very upset by this comment, which was not intended by me to be overheard. I received a stern lecture on the differences between corned beef and smoked meat. I am not a big fan of this genre of meat, but I will say that if you are into corned beef, which I am not, smoked meat tastes like a very lean, very tender version of corned beef.

As for Schwartz's, I would not repeat, although I am glad I at least tried it. I believe in trying everything at least once.

Stripperlover: I'm going to try not to start insulting you with coarse language (you know how I fuse when I read stupid stuff). But what the fuck are you talking about?

You just made a complete fool of yourself in saying such a stupid statement without any knowledge.

You have no clue what so ever about main steak house and their smoke meat sandwich. This is very insulting for their business that someone like you makes such a false comment on this board where many believe what they read.

If you do a little research, you can see that DISCOVERY CHANNEL (dayli planet had a show about their establishement a few years back with a vanier college teacher) and how they make their smoke meat on the second floor (just like swchartz).

Again this is very insulting for MAIN STEAK HOUSE!

Did you have a bad experience there? Is it that time of the month for ya? PLease don't comment unless you really know something!

SL,

If AllOverHer is correct, your post would be a serious defamation of MAIN STEAK HOUSE.

I am not going to take sides on this issue because I don't know who is right or wrong, but I would caution all posters that it is one thing to say so and so's food sucks, which is merely an opinion, and it is quite another to say so and so injects their foods with chemicals which, if untrue, would be an actionable false statement of fact.

I have to agree with StripperLover. Anyone local would know about the difference between Schwartz and the Main. (Discovery channel couldn't get to the back of Schwartz disallowed them)
One more thing, only tourists who think they are smart would come to a smoke meat joint like Schwartz and order it lean! It's like going to Ruth's steak house and order a well done! Of course it's tasteless.

Misquoted, Misconstrued!

I NEVER said I ordered smoked meat lean at Schwartz's. I said it TASTED lean and tender, as opposed to fatty and tough. I did not request that it be served in any particular manner and why would I since I had never had smoked meat previously, and would not even know that it could be ordered cooked in certain ways.

By the ways, the manager at Scvhwartz's who lectured me on how superior smoked meat is to corned beef is obsessed with Carnegie's Deli in NYC. He told my companion that Schwartz's had issued a "smoked meat taste challenge" to the legendary Carnegie's Deli, which allegedly refused the challenge. This may have been puffery/bullshit directed at two obvious American tourists and I interpreted it as such.

These incidents occurred about 2 years ago.

back to food,

Rib 'n Reef on Decarie - I had one of the best prime rib dinners there, and as a plus they also make their Caesar salad fresh at your table
