Do you really feel like posting on MERB anymore?

Do you really feel like posting anymore on MERB when your posts are deleted by a MOD (a more and more publicly criticized mod btw) ? Fred Zed, this is your call. I understand that less and less members are willing to exert this ungrateful mod position, but couldn't you just convince some of the great mods we had in the past to come back and fix the mayhem we are witnessing here. This situation is really getting ridiculous (save Mod8, who is doing a great job).

    Hello HFE,

No, I don't like it when my posts are deleted. But the mods have never done this to me unless they eliminated a thread that had gotten out of hand with rampant flaming and sleazy unfounded accusations by some members. That I can understand.

I also don't like it when members do the same. Recently Octavian deleted a thread on the Oil Spill. No explanation was given. I thought the thread had some good posts despite some mildly extreme statements. The thread was well-established and some of us had tried to make detailed thoughtful posts. In my view, that made the thread property of the board, not the original poster, and I thought deleting it was pretty rude and inconsiderate. I think someone just didn't like the opposing views of some. The mods should bring it back despite the wishes of the creator. It's been done before.

This is not a reference or implication toward you or any particular individual but, per se, I find deleting threads or posts of others rude and discouraging unless clearly warranted. Is that what you mean? You only referred to any deleted posts. Obviously, there are circumstances where poor judgment by the poster can warrant deletion. Just generally, of course those with the poor judgment, like shill accusers and spiteful SP bashers with a grudge, rarely think so.

If I did see the mods delete anything that was legitimate I would be discouraged, as I have been on occasion...just as I would be if many members lost the opportunity to take part in their favorite threads because a few just can't get it through their heads to behave themselves. Punishing all because of a few would be very...VERY POOR judgment.

    Cheers,

    Merlot

HFE, if the members would respect the rules and each other, there would be less moderation and less criticism.

There are many rules to follow but the main 2 for all member, no matter if the board talk about cars or escorts are as follow:

    1. Members must stay respectful. Same as any serious board you'll find on the net.
    2. Threads must stay on topic. This is the same on any serious forum you'll ever find. Turning a discussion to politics, when the original post was about finding-out what restaurants were open or closed, this is going WAY off topic. This is even worst when the turn is known to be toward such a sensitive topic that will turn into a a flame war 90% of the time. Sensitive topics are allowed but we won't allow all the threads to become time bombs.

There are other boards targeted for those who can't accept these simple prerequisites.

P.S. It makes sense the Mod who's the most active and most present would be the one who get the most criticism. By the type of job I have, I have a computer beside me almost all the time besides when I sleep or when I'm outside. The more one do, the more exposure one have.

I am not here to win a popularity contest, only to ensure the rules are followed and people who are following the guidelines can post without getting annoyed.

I always find it interesting when someone throw tomatoes but can't point to what led them to do so, besides their own agenda. Most here know if I make a mistake, I can admit it. Be my guest and tell me what I did that was not within the rules!

    .....

Ricky, active Mods are Mod 8 and Mod 11. We have the chance of having Mod 9 helping once in a while when he have a moment but he's not regular.

Mod 10 retired for personal reason. He might be back at some point.

    Hello HFE,

When threads go so far off topic that the title of the thread no longer applies to a good number of posts, those posts will be removed. We understand that people tend to respond to the last post they read and that this often leads to a thread going off. But members should learn to start a new thread when this happens instead of continuing to take the existing one into an area far removed from the original topic.

If members will learn to stay on topic, there will be no off topic posts to remove. If you want to ensure that your posts remain on the board, stay on topic or start a new thread when you see an existing one going off topic and save us the trouble of doing a cleanup. You could also notify a moderator by PM if you see a thread going seriously off topic and we will step in to get things back on track. In some cases we will also be happy to split the off topic posts into their own thread if there is any value to the community by doing so. This has been done on a number of occasions in the past.

A few years ago, there were some very attractive merbites, but they received the very long ban or even permanent ban, I found it were very pity if I were mob, I would never doing that. eg, in a cage, if you removed all the fierce and the noisy birds out, inside a cage will become very quiet and boring as on Merb we are right now.

Finally, I urge Mods of being more alert with the people who Shill.

    Thanks !

I have to agree with you here. However, if we're going to make a habit of bringing back threads there should be guidelines. Many times this board seems like it's being used by a few posters in the same way political bloggers use them all over the internet.

    Hello Clavie,

There have been very few contributing members banned permanently. Two that come to mind who will never be re-instated are Elf Gone Bad and his many personae and Oliver Kloseoff. The reason for the first should be obvious, the second was banned for his total lack of respect for moderators, members, MERB and people in general. Others have been banned for lengthy periods, such as GG for example who was banned as a result of his confrontational nature as well as the inability of other members of MERB to co-exist with him in a peaceful manner. His ban has been over for a period of months and it seems he has decided not to return. These members, as well as others banned from MERB, have gone on to post elsewhere and if you visit that board you will notice that they are about the only posters they have and that board is in a constant state of turmoil with members at each others' throats. That is exactly the type of atmosphere we do not wish to have here on MERB.

As for shills, we do our best to find and expose them. This cannot be done on suspicion alone, we require proof of a connection between the suspected shill and the SP or agency they are assumed to be shilling for. Without that proof, we can do nothing. Some are quite obvious and we believe that members here are intelligent enough to make their own decisions on which reviews to believe and trust. I would also advise you not to put any faith in shill accusations posted elsewhere by a former member with an axe to grind against MERB and agencies which have banned him.

    HFE,

I don't know if you are referring to the posts by you and Mazingerz in the thread I started on July 1/Moving Day. That thread was supposed to be about what restaurants were open on July 1. You and Mazingerz then intervened in the thread with some commentary on the political background to the holiday. I did not complain about your posts and while one post by both of you was sufficient to give the background, which I gathered from Google Translator since neither of you had the courtesy to post them in English (despite both of you having the ability to do so - another big surprise), you then proceeded to hijack my thread. I still did not complain to the Mods about the hijacking of my thread, but I did post in there to say that tourists do not really care about local politics, they don't have a vote and when they come to Jazz Festival they want to know if certain restaurants will be closed. At some point Mod 11, acting on his own initiative or perhaps on the complaints of others, then deleted your posts and those of Mazingerz. From my perspective the only relevance of any of those posts to my thread was to point out the political background on this holiday that is called Canada Day. I understand that some background may be relevant and admittedly I don't know too much about the reasons for this holiday. But this was not an opportunity to start a debate in my thread about these local political issues that do not concern me or any other tourists.

You and Mazingerz are free to start another thread on that topic, and you could have done so. I believe that Mod 11 acted appropriately in this particular case.

And by the ways neither you nor Mazingerz bothered to make a single contribution to the thread as far as giving info on whether particular restaurants are opened or not. Which is very consistent with the posting history both of you have shown on this Board, which is largely agenda driven, totally disrespectful, often presumptuous in your case, and having nothing at all to do with sharing relevant information. Both of you have been consistent non-contributors (except Mazingerz has contributed to the notion that separatist revolution can be fomented through MERB), so it should not come as any surprise when your non-contributory posts are deleted. The question should not be whether the two of you feel like posting on MERB, but whether MERB should feel like having the two of you around to engage in self-indulgent posting that does not really benefit the community at large. I will let the Mods resolve that one.

Used to like EGB even if it was difficult to follow his post.
He used to make me laugh a lot.
Same with GG and even Olie who used to inflame threads.

Used to read 98% of the time and post only facts and info.

Got off the board for a long time. Had to choose another name then I found out back less than a year ago that people found Merb starting to be boring and many going on to the blue one.

So I started to do like EGB and even the ones saying they would not answer started to answer.
This off course brought some demagogy and frankly it's fun to see people wanting to screw your head off by always saying the opposite of the last post or the ones starting the thread.

Usually it brings a lot of infos from others who wants to moderate.
They don't like me barging in and saying stupid things but hey I didn't care.

So I just had to take for Mtrl (since it's a board for Mtrl and those who pay for advertising are to get people in Mtrl to make more money), take for Quebec vs. Canada to get a lot more reaction since the majority posting does in english.

Then you had some comments on USA both good and bad and you get reaction from both side of the borders.
Once in a while you trash gov. no matter which one and throw in a small racist, feminist and or left wing post and there you go.

I stick to Lounge and sport since I didn't want to disrupt the other sections which has to do with really what this forum is about.

So I'll let you guys alone for a while and you'll probably find it more fun to post.

BTW I like EB, Techman, Kepler, Protagoras, etc... I've been reading your post (for some) since a long time ago, so it was fun to throw sh*t at you guys and getting your reaction.

I totally support the Moderator on this issue. First there are some business rules which are normal for the board to get funds and survive. Second if we want to have a board with free speech where everyone can express his opinion, right or false, we need some respect and politness the ones toward the others. Without the Mods this board would be hijacked by a couple of bullies (we regularly have the demonstration of this lol).

Personnally I really appreciate the balance on this board where we can get a certain level of bitterness sometimes (which make the debates human and interesting) but no one can use anymous posts to flame others without consequences.

Last thing, Mods are just human (like soccer refs lol) and they have to make decisions which are sometimes borderline... It is very easy to be the one always unhappy and never deciding anything himself. Their job is not easy, and I think they do it great.

PS: As promised I hope that I will get some Chloe's free tickets for this white knight post in favor of the Mods Mods send me the tickets where you know lol

This is the second or third thread along this subject line so it cannot be just discounted out of hand. There is a fine line between maintaining decorum and over-moderating. Put me down as someone who thinks the line has been crossed many times in the last year here but that is my opinion. For what its worth, yes it does have a direct impact on how often I bother logging on here. There are still the same number of snide remarks as in the old days. The only difference is they are now coming from handles with numbers.

You have to keep in mind that as in general society members here have different tastes, goals, and sensitivities, and they all have the right to be here and participate within their own "comfort" so to speak. Some just want to exchange information and maybe socialize quietly, others also want to stir things up and "throw sh*t" as you say. That's all fine within some real limits, as long as it doesn't come to the point where positively contributing members are leaving, and that was the real problem with some who have been banned.

Many real gentlemen, good businessmen and hard working guys who contributed many honest reviews and just wanted respect for their efforts, and who never got involved in the flame games you like, were attacked and unwillingly thrown into the muck. They were and are real gentlemen who were well liked and wanted. They never did or said a poor thing to anyone. A few that I know had no wish to endure the circus element and left because of it. Now, though they continue to hobby, their further contributions are gone and they refuse to review or post anything largely because of those who like to "throw sh*t".

You can point out that all have a right to be here and be themselves without being forced to be what others want. But there are limits and like going to the ballgame, even though you have paid for your seat, if you abuse your right to be here you can get tossed out. This board is a business after all that has chosen a certain philosophy for success. What would you do with those who refuse to cooperate within your defined boundaries and cost your board contributions and business?

Still, I have to agree that at times there has been some heavy-handedness. Maybe this is effective in displaying the message that there will be no toleration for abuse, but some of what appears to be almost a gang beat down in marginal abuse cases has been unsettling. In some cases even a mild infraction has been beaten down beyond the need to do so. Strict firmness has it's benefits, but if and when that starts to become a compulsive habit then it will hurt more than help. Hopefully the mods will remember to be more judicious rather than overdoing firmness at times.

    Cheers,

    Merlot

Sometimes, when we repeat the same thing over and over, things that are known or should be known by anybody before they post, we do get annoyed and it is sometime very hard to keep a cool head. Are we going too heavy sometime? Maybe. Does it get the message across to other? Usually it does... For a few days... You guys can believe me, sometime the suspension imposed is way less than what we impulsively would like to give. When somebody can show us we went too hard, it's a fact things can be discussed, it's been done.

    ---

Clavie and JH, the noisy birds are now on an "interesting" board who have a lot less post than MERB have and a noticeable part of these post are MERB bashing or total bullshit that give no value whatsoever and are done by a few members who contribute only controversy.

Just do the experience: log to MERB, click "new posts" on top. This will show how many threads have new posts, not how many new posts (vBulletin way of doing thing). Read them all or mark them all as read, then go log to the blue board and do the same. Wait 24 hours and repeat the same process and compare the "new post" count.

You'll see the "Jerry Springer show" is fun to watch for a while but people visit boards to get some info they can use, not only for the show. Watching Jerry Sprigner one hour a day is one thing, watching ONLY Jerry Springer to get all your info isn't a good idea and most people realize this, that's why MERB is still strong.

First off I have to apologize to EB for being one of the posters who took his thread off topic. It really wasn't my intention but when I see Mazingerz start up with his racist BS I can't sit on the sidelines. I don't think it's a coincidence that he picked this time of the year to make his return. That being said, I have no problem with my posts that were removed. They were off topic and didn't belong in the thread.

As for the mods being too heavy handed, well sometimes I agree with this statement like with the total ban on tech threads. But when I think of the behaviour of many of us in those threads I understand why it was done. I guess we get what we deserve sometimes.

Merlot, I have to take exception with one of your statements..."You can point out that all have a right to be here and be themselves without being forced to be what others want". None of us have the right to be here. We are here, and this board exists, because of Fred Zed. None of us, other than the very few supporting members and advertisers pay to be here. We have no 'right' to be here. Internet boards aren't democracies, they are privately owned and controlled and we're their guests. If we don't behave they have the right to toss us out, just as we have the right to throw someone out of our own house if they don't follow our rules.

Both Merlot and myself were members of a committee on the other board and we saw from the inside how easily and quickly a poorly run board can fall apart. I've seen what poor moderation by moderators who have no real power can do to a board. I'd much rather be part of a board where the mods go a bit overboard on the rare occasion than one where everything is allowed to be posted as long as you don't criticize that particular board. Those posts as well as the posters who make them seem to vanish without a trace over there.

Possum Trot, yeah, there've been a few threads on this subject over the last couple of years or so. For some reason they always seem to be started by the person who was part of the problem. And even then, these threads aren't closed or deleted but left open for all of us to comment on the situation. I take that as a good sign, not a bad one. We are allowed to complain and sometimes these complaints have led to changes. Look at the changes made to the no review policy. Everyone complained about that and changes were made. When was the last time a no review was granted to an escort? But do we ever see anyone congratulating the mods on these changes? No, we don't.

So I'd like to thank the mods for giving their time and trying their best to control all of us different personalities. I know that I for one don't make it easy for them sometimes. We should be happy that MERB exists. The only alternatives are one blue board that's totally in chaos and another blue board where the english language is banned from use. Trust me, things could be much worse than they are here. Could they be better, sure, we could HAVE SOME NEW SMILIES for one thingbut overall I'm happy to be here.

Oh yeah... JH Fan...one day I'll figure you out. I'm still trying to figure out some of your posts but I guess I'm missing the magic decoder ring or something. We get in some heated discussions sometimes but I enjoy them.
