    Montreal Bar Thread

There is a restaurant thread on MERB: New Montreal Restaurant Thread (https://merb.cc/vbulletin//showthrea...ght=restaurant). However, there does not seem to be a similar thread discussing Montreal bars, although there are multiple threads on individual bars in Montreal. (Message to Mods: If there is already a Montreal bar thread please merge this posting with the latter).

    Piranha Bar, 680, Ste-Catherine West

This place is located on Ste-Catherine in the same block as, and just east of SuperSex. They play live music in a relaxed atmosphere. I wandered in a couple of times during the Jazz Festival and they had a band playing Blues the first night I was there, and most recently a Jazz band. There is no cover and the prices are quite reasonable. One of the things I like about this place is the accessibility. There is no brass door, no doorman, no bouncer, nobody to show you where to sit and then wait for a tip. Rather, the door opens onto the street, and you can just wander in and sit where you want. If want you want a drink right away you can order one at the bar. Otherwise, you can check the place out first and eventually the bartender will come around and take you order (l usually like to order my drinks from an attractive waitress rather than a bartender, but in this case, given the other advantages of this place, I am willing to make an exception).

I would be interested if anyone knows of bars in Montreal which offer advantages similar to that that of the Piranha Bar: -ie. live band, no cover, no doorman, reasonable prices, relaxed atmosphere, easy accessibility.

During the Jazz Festival of 2008, an American friend of mine who is in his mid 50s and I were at Thursdays and he was literally attacked by a drunken Cougar whom I would estimate was in her late 40s or so, wearing clothing that was far too revealing for what it was revealing (if you know what I mean). My friend is too polite a man to openly reject a Cougar in some distress, so he communicated with his eyes to me (one of those "please get rid of her" looks). I then manufactured the necessary excuse that enabled us to leave, thus rescuing him from the clutches of her Cougar paws.

There is no question he could have fucked her if he wanted to, but he didn't. She made a beeline for him as soon as we entered the bar.

    Thursdays Terrace

The upper terrace at Thursdays is now exclusively open only to those who order food with their drinks. If you just want to drink beer, you have to head downstairs to drink with the peons. Company policy.

That's not new. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. The terasse belongs to the restaurant, not the bar.
And the Lord said unto John, "Come forth and receive eternal life." But John came fifth and won a toaster.

You're probably right, but I went there with a friend who seemed upset by this policy, so I figured I would mention it.

It should be noted that I have sat on the upper terrace at Winnies, ordered drinks and have not been asked to leave. Maybe the policy changes when the weather is really good and demand for the upper terrace tables is high.

Also I should mention that the people watching at Thursdays is GREAT. Late Friday afternoon I saw the most beautiful black girl (about 23 years old) seated at the bar and waiting for a table on the terrace. She was with a tall, very good looking white guy. This was probably the most attractive interracial couple I have ever seen. Both of them looked like they could be models, but I was obviously focused on the black girl. She was drinking red wine, he was drinking beer. I really envy that guy.

What is the best (English speaking) pub to sit at the bar, have a beer, and watch the game? (Bonus points if they have good bar food)

My experience with the joints previously mentioned is that they tend to be jam packed pick-up places.

    Hi Rusty,

I recommend McKibbins Irish Pub; they have 3 locations: One on Bishop, St.Laurent blvd, or in the West Island Pointe-Claire off the hwy 40 west. http://www.mckibbinsirishpub.com/

The bartenders are english speaking, as are the owners, they have great Irish pub food, from burgers to Prime Rib, and a huge selection of imported draft beer and/or Scotch.
It's not much of a pick up joint but very relaxing and very friendly staff.

    Hope this info helps you!

    Take care,
    Sandy
    xoxo

I've been to Hurlies a few dozen times. However, i don't recall it as being a place to go & watch a game. I don't even recall ever seeing a tv set in the there.
