Perception of Value

The Perception of Value concept is quite interesting in its applications in all realms, INCLUDING ESCORTING. To start this thread, I'm quoting an article on Lightspeed Venture Partner's Blog dated January 29, 2008:

A recent study by Stanford and Caltech found that increasing the perceived price of a bottle of wine increased the ACTUAL and perceived enjoyment that tasters derived from drinking the wine:

According to researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the California Institute of Technology, if a person is told he or she is tasting two different wines—and that one costs $5 and the other $45 when they are, in fact, the same wine—the part of the brain that experiences pleasure will become more active when the drinker thinks he or she is enjoying the more expensive vintage…

The study

The researchers recruited 11 male Caltech graduate students who said they liked and occasionally drank red wine. The subjects were told that they would be trying five different Cabernet Sauvignons, identified by price, to study the effect of sampling time on flavor. In fact, only three wines were used—two were given twice. The first wine was identified by its real bottle price of $5 and by a fake $45 price tag. The second wine was marked with its actual $90 price and by a fictitious $10 tag. The third wine, which was used to distract the participants, was marked with its correct $35 price. A tasteless water was also given in between wine samples to rinse the subjects’ mouths. The wines were given in random order, and the students were asked to focus on flavor and how much they enjoyed each sample.

Results

The participants said they could taste five different wines, even though there were only three, and added that the wines identified as more expensive tasted better. The researchers found that an increase in the perceived price of a wine did lead to increased activity in the mOFC because of an associated increase in taste expectation.

Hello CS,

While I understand the premise of the study...a fair test of "the wine" would have been a blind taste test.

What the study proves is something that I believe most of us already know...the majority of people are frankly, superficial. It is a sad statement, but true. If it costs more, it MUST be better...RIGHT? WRONG! I always believed that value, like beauty is in the eye (or mind) of the beholder. Each consumer makes a "value judgement" based on quality of the item or service, price, ability to pay and willingness to part with the cash.

To me, the only thing that is proven by someone who persistently and consistently insists that the most expensive is the best or that they always have to have the most expensive is either:
a. They have so much money that they don't give a shit.
b. They are superficial and shallow.
c. They are an idiot.
d. All of the above.

Relative to the hobby...well there in addition to the "servces" that are being paid for and hence judged for value - you also have to factor in the intangible and often immeasurable "human" traits. That enters an entirely different set of variables into the "value judgement" ;). Add to that the interaction that takes place between 2 "humans" plus timing and the always changing personal environmental factors and the results when one or the other partner changes are endless.

Interesting topic.

Have fun,

Jman

Jman47,

As usual, a well crafted and intuitive answer. I'm not arguing any of your points, but I read an interesting statistical study pointing to a new "breakdown" of your points. I'm "engaged" tonight, but I'll post the article tomorrow.

Note: A little higher brain function is needed to get our focus out of looking in the sewer for the last several weeks.

Respectfully,
CS

If you give me a $300/hr. escort and a $150/hr. escort (all things being equal), my mind is going to perceive that I got twice the screwing at the higher price (a literal screwing plus a figurative screwing). Saving me money increases my actual and perceived enjoyment.

It never ceases to amaze me when people say "you get what you pay for". Sure, charge them double and they know they are getting something twice as good.
Once tried an unscientific wine experiment with a snobby lady, replacing the cheaper wine into the more expensive bottle and she never noticed.

For me its the experience, I had a $300 SP that looked fantastic, but up close I could smell her BO and cigarette stink. When she bent over I could tell that she was not a wiper. So I had better experiences with $100 indies.

JMan47,

I realize I owe you a article quote on this thread. I've been trying to find the magazine I read on the concept without luck. Damn, getting so old I can’t remember which magazine or book I just read….anyways…..

The essence that I gathered from this article was there has been a subtle change in demographics to a new generation of called "the NEO Buyer" or the "New Economic Order". The NEO buyer is all about spending their money on something that connects with them on a personal level. For example it's the NEO buyers who are purchasing the iPhone and iPad because these are the things that are different and appeal to their senses!

The NEO buyers are willing to buy a Luxury items, even in a down market, and able to purchase other goods/services with little regard to prices. Some entities are marketing themselves on with this more tech savvy and intuned bunch as a new marketing niche!

The other market is more of a traditional buyer looking for value, features, and the best price.

The "Neo-Buyer", or something close to this concept, now makes up about 28% of the consumers out there. These "Neo-Buyers" make up a minority, but typically upperscale buyer that tends to be a more style & presentation intensive customer vs. the "post-WWII" or “traditional consumers” (about 51%) who look at straight value, features, price & dependability.

With regards to its application in the Montreal Escort Market, a few have tried with some success, examples: FKS, Aleeva & Friends.....while others simply have "poked at it", without a clear marketing plan or good presentation/follow-up.

This says a lot about the structure of the human mind

No, this says a lot about the dumb students in California! A true wine connisseur would never fall for that BS.

And if they can use YMMV on us, how about we say YPMV (your payment may vary)!

At bit off subject, but I have no problem with the YMMV concept. What many on this board fail to understand is if they're simply up front with the expectations, then they won't be disappointed. In the first few minutes of the appt. make it clear what you want. If the SP cannot deliver, then say thank you very much with a $20, assuming she's not a fraud or it's not a BS operation. In the case of the later, just get her out the door.

I have never been into BBWs, but for those that are they may consider a BBW experience to be good value while others like myself may not.

I would say there is a treshold where it is true it doesn't make a difference, let's say between a 200$ pair of shoes and a 300$ pair,it is only clever marketing but if you look at a 50$ pair and the said 200$, yes there is a difference,it's called quality...and the same apply to SP services...you do get what you pay for:a girl who offer 15 min session n (!) is not in the same league as the hour service...and it would be hypocrical to expect the same..hum...quality.

Loll and I laugh also when I read:no rush services and than rates for 15min,30 min,60 min ...it is hard not to feel rushed while a eggtimer is ticking loll... ah well it makes for smiles in the morning...
