Angry Bloc head refuses Canadian flags to vets

o.k. I know the separatists hate Canada, but is it too much to ask to hand out flags to veterans for rememberance day, these guys fought for your freedom (including dumb asses like this Bellavance guy )

Has it been the tradition for the local MP to give a new flag to the local legion for the holiday? Is this usually a new flag provided at government expense thru the MP's office? It seems to me that this guy is trying to make a political point by being a jackass. But I am curious about what the usual custom is. I don't know if our local VFW or American Legion get complimentary flags from our government or if they usually buy them themselves. A yearly gift flag from ones federal representative is a nice tradition and a good use of government money. Its terribly rude to veterans in general and quite mean spirited to the very old ones who are still with us who saw real combat in WW2. We have a huge parade here every November 11th and its really a special moment for the most elderly veterans.

    Fucking disgrace is right.

Not too mention pathetic if I might add.

I heard on the news just the other day that there's more talk about Quebec seperating from Canada.

But I'm not sure it will ever happen as Quebec & the Bloc needs our (Canada's) money.

Does anyone else think that seperation may actually happen?

If it does I know my father & I will move to Toronto not Ottawa.

Some ppl I've spoken to feel that Ottawa is also being heavily populated with seperatists.

YES, there has been a precedence and tradition of providing Canadian flags to veterans for Remembrance Day. The story I saw on the news mentioned something about the previous m.p.’s from this riding always giving flags to this legion for Remembrance day, this asshole Bellavance is just being a prick about it.

Ah, the Separatist issue has finally reared its ugly head on this Board!

As an American, this issue was never on the radar screen of the reality that is my life until some years ago when I was a guest at the Club Med in Turks & Caicos and a fight broke out at the dinner table between a group from Montreal and a group from Toronto in which there was such vitriol that some left the dinner table not to come back.

I think most Americans I have spoken to are troubled by the prospect of separatism because of the perception that it would somehow impact negatively on tourism and make Montreal less tourist friendly especially for Americans.

I have spoken to a French-Canadian SP in Montreal who told me she is for separatism because the Anglo-Canadian politicians have passed laws deliberately watering down and dissipating French Canadian culture.

I have spoken to an Anglo-Canadian SP in Montreal who told me that if separatism ever happened, she would move away from Canada the very next day and go to California.

From all of this I have gathered that at it skeletal core, separatism is really a French v. Anglo thing and a rejection of cosmopolitanism and the evolution of Montreal into a modern, multicultural, multiethnic society. But perhaps I am a mere uninformed American who has missed something. If so I am sure you will let me know.

If quebec does separate, you can be sure at least 1/4 of the population will leave, me included.

And Yes, its a disgrace what they have done towards our veterans... insulting.

    Cop Out

    Elvis,

With due respect your post is a total cop out. You are saying that Americans can discuss their own politics calmly and rationally, but Canadians cannot? Do you really believe this?

I want to hear some discussion from the Canadian posters on these issues. You have been amused by our debates, now it is our turn to be entertained and hopefully educated as to what the issues are and what the correct positions are.

    just a quick comment:

the canadians who fought in WWII did it under a different flag.....the actual canadian flag was adopted in 1964.....

other thing: the federal government refuse to distribute any Quebec flag, refering to the Ministere des Relations avec les Citoyens du Quebec. What the MP of the Bloc did, was to refer those men to Heritage Canada.

I am surprise to see how it is "normal the stand for the honor of Canada and for its conviction" when you are federalist and how it is "disgrace from separatists to stand for Independance of Quebec and its conviction"

There is a little problem of mind-openess and freedom of speech here....

    EB.... It's quite simple.

Some people are so hard pressed with their arguments, that they don't even remember what they are arguing about. They are die hard with their views... but aren't sure why. Hate is a terrible thing. This province is filled with it. Nobody is sure why there is so much hate, but there is. The problem is that most people here are like a horse on a horse-drawn buggy. They have those little covers on their eyes to make them see straight. They cannot see what goes on around them. I'm sure if the majority of the people in this province would spend some time in lovely places such as the former soviet union, the congo, iraq even... they would realize that unity is a good thing, and that, in reality, we have NOTHING to complain about.

This is a forum based around sex. HOWEVER... if we can talk about the red sox (yay), restaurants, hockey, hotels, cabinet making, ac milan vs inter (go reggina), bush (the george w kind), avatars, gmail, and so on... then we can discuss politics too. To avoid the subject is wrong.

If the perception of the world by Canadians is as indicated in the last paragraph, then the perception is not in line with reality. The reality is that all of the Arab countries in the Middle East are failures politically, economically, militarily, socially, culturally, artistically, and educationally and these failures pre-existed ANY U.S. policy in the region such as we know it. These failures have permitted and precipitated the rise of Islamofascism and terrorism, just as Germany's post WW I failures precipitated and permitted the rise of Nazism and modern fascism and totalitarianism.

The poll should have asked the following question: where would you feel safest walking down the street without fear of being kidnapped and having your head cut off for absolutely no reason: any State in the USA, or any Arab State?

The way I see this whole issue of not giving flags to veterans for Remembrance Day is this:

It shouldn’t be an english / french issue , it shouldn't have anything to do with quebec / canada or federalism / sovereignty, it's about way more than that, it's about RESPECT, of which the malcontents from the Bloc have little or none of.

And thanks for the interesting article Capt.
