Hello all,

Mods, same rules as a memorial thread. No ugliness or flaming of the subject (the victims) allowed.

Congresswoman Giffords, others shot in Ariz.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40978517/ns/politics/?gt1=43001

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday and an aide and federal judge were killed when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store as the Democratic lawmaker met with constituents, officials said.

A 9-year-old child (girl) also was killed, authorities said.

C.J. Karamargin, a spokesman for Giffords, said the congresswoman was in surgery as of 1 p.m. local time and that an unspecified number of Giffords staff members were injured in the shooting. Karamargin said he had no other information on the conditions of the injured or on the circumstances of the shooting.

In latest details, a Tuscon surgeon said he was "very optimistic" that Giffords would recover from the shooting.

Federal officials told NBC News that U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll was among those who had died from injuries suffered in the shooting. He was the chief judge in Arizona, appointed in 1991 by the first President Bush. He became chief judge in 2006.

Congressional officials said an aide to Giffords also was killed, and unknown number of others were injured, including staffers to the lawmaker.
Gabrielle Giffords

President Barack Obama called the shooting "an unspeakable tragedy" and that such "a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society."

U.S. Capitol police say the 22-year-old shooter was in custody as one official said he carried out the attack with a pistol.

People familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that the gunman had been identified as Jared Laughner.

The officials who described the events did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not permitted to comment publicly.

'Senseless attack'
"I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff," newly elected House Speaker John Boehner said. "An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country."

Three hours after the shooting, the L-shaped shopping center in Tucson was blocked off by police and had fire trucks and other vehicles in its parking lot that blocked the view of the store's front door. No shell casing could be seen from the area 500 yards from the store where reporters and photographers were kept.

Giffords, 40, was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.

Giffords tweeted shortly before the shooting, saying: "My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later."

Giffords is married to astronaut Mark E. Kelly, who has piloted space shuttles Endeavour and Discovery. The two met in China in 2003 while they were serving on a committee there, and were married in January 2007.

Giffords was first elected to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in the 2006 election, and she won a narrow victory against a tea party favorite in the 2010 election.

She has been mentioned as a possible Democratic nominee in 2012 for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Jon Kyl, who has not said whether he'll run again, or for the governor's office in 2014.

The shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers but nothing that reached the point of actual violence.

A San Francisco man upset with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's support of health care reform pleaded guilty to threatening the Democratic congresswoman and her family, calling her directly on March 25 and threatening to destroy her Northern California home if she voted for health care reform.
Video: Rep. Giffords target of harassment, threats (on this page)

In July, a California man known for his anger over left-leaning politics engaged in a shootout with highway patrol officers after planning an attack on the ACLU and another nonprofit group. The man said he wanted to "start a revolution" by killing people at the ACLU and the Tides Foundation.

Giffords herself has drawn the ire of the right, especially for her support of the health care bill from politicians like Sarah Palin.

Her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote to approve the health care law in March, with someone either kicking or shooting out a glass door and window.

Despite the animosity she has generated from the right, Giffords describes herself as a former Republican and current Blue Dog Democrat.

"You know, actually as a former Republican, you know, I consider myself someone who is pretty in the middle, I'm a blue dog Democrat, and one that is interested in making sure that our country maintains our prosperity and frankly, our superiority over other countries and that's where we look at these threat, obviously our defense budget, our level of education," she said in an interview with Fox this week.

Law makers urged to take precaution
Officers with the Capitol Police force advised members of the House and their aides to "take reasonable and prudent precautions" about their own security in the wake of the shooting.

In an e-mail obtained by The Associated Press, the Capitol Police say they were directly involved in the investigation of the shooting in Tuscon.

This is a breaking news story, check back for details. The Associated Press and NBC News contributed to this report.

UPDATE: CNN is reporting 6 dead, 12 wounded.

She was one of the Democrats on Sarah Palin's infamous "Hit List" a few months ago. Don't be too surprised if you hear that the shooter is one of Ms. Palin's followers......

Considering the joke that is the gun control laws in most of the States, i'm actually surprised we don't hear this kind of stuff happening on a weekly basis.

Palin's hit list map

Hello Doc,

I hadn't known about the details of this "Hit List". I thought it was just some loose campaign talk to psyche up followers. While I am sure today's events are not what Palin intended, the trouble with using the type of hyper-demagoguery, along with inflammatory and suggestive hate terminology among bitterly motivated activists like the Tea-Partiers (per se), is some senseless true believing psychos may either think shooting somebody is a logical expansion of the goals, or thinks they will be heroes through their barbarism. Shooting an elected official is not only attempted murder it is a precise act of tyranny against the democratic voice of the majority. It's a conspiracy against democratic principles no matter who does it.

Let's also not forget the others who were injured or killed. While this wanna-be assassin may have thought he was shooting someone he thought was depriving him of his rights, in so doing he has deprived others of their right to life, including that of a 9 year-old girl... to live her life.

I can't blame Palin directly for what has happened, but if she and those like her don't come out directly and strongly against such acts they become de facto promoters of it. I commend Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner for his very pointed total condemnation of the shooting as a heinous act, an attack on all who serve in government. Now, what about Palin?

:(

Check out what Gifford's opponent Jesse Kelly (fully endorsed by Sarah Palin) had on his agenda:

"Palin's map doesn't seem to be the only example of inferred gun violence directed at Giffords. A Daily Kos commenter reports another disturbing set of images from the campaign of Giffords's opponent in the last Congressional race. A rally for Kelly featured an event where supporters could shoot M16s with the candidate at a rifle range. It includes the unfortunate message "help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office."

Giffords had also been the victim of vandalism due to her support of health-care reform. According to The New York Times, the windows of Giffords's Tucson office were either broken or shot out immediately after the bill passed in the House."

(If this isn't encouraging the murder of a politician, what is?)

Also...........why are those types of crimes ALWAYS committed by nuts from the Right?

Hello Doc,

"Get on Target for November Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly"

That's exactly how it looks with no punctuation and capital letters emphasizing certain key words for effect. This is exactly what I meant by using specific highly inflammatory term combinations that can lead others into believing there is at least tacit permission to go further. I agree this is suggestive of violence, especially for those so predisposed. But I have the feeling it's a legal dead end and would not be found to be an invitation to violence by a jury trying to determine it's intent by the legal standard of..."beyond a reasonable doubt". Defenders would say the Right to Bear Arms is not suggestive of anything but that right.

However, for myself it is indicative of the worst sort of conservative extremism suggesting a permissiveness of violence as a solution. In my view, anyone who would campaign in this way is just plain contemptible and unworthy of public office..if not a threat.

disgusting,

Merlot

the 9 year old girl who got killed,Christina Taylor Green, was born on .....

September 11th 2001 .... 9-11

http://www.allvoices.com/contribute...reen-born-on-911-died-today-by-a-gunmans-hand

un-fucking-believable

A neighbor was going to the event and invited Christina along because she thought she would enjoy it, said her uncle, Greg Segalini.
Christina had just been elected to the student council at her school.
The event was an opportunity for constituents to meet Giffords and talk about any concerns they had related to the federal government.

You bet Sarah Palin has blood on her hands!

Giffords had warned previously that the heated political rhetoric had prompted violent threats against her and vandalism at her office.

In an interview last year with the MSNBC television network, Giffords cited a map of electoral targets put out by former Alaska Republican Governor and prominent conservative Sarah Palin, each marked by the cross hairs of a rifle sight.

“When people do that, they’ve got to realize that there’s consequences to that action,” Giffords told MSNBC.

Saturday, Palin had removed the graphic from her website and offered her condolences on a posting on Facebook.

“We all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice,” Palin said, speaking of Saturday’s shooting.

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2011/01/08/16812071.html

p.s. What Sarah Palin & Jesse Kelly did is as bad as that male nurse who convinced a girl to commit suicide, which he's since been convicted for. The first time i heard about Palin's map was on Bill Maher's tv show last summer where he warned that this kind of stuff would likely happen. Palin's rallies (and the Tea Party's) often tended to incite violence & attract the fringe of amercian society. Not only against fellow politicians, but against the President of the United States himself. One aspect of Palin's personality that's been promoted by her handlers is the fact that she enjoyes using guns & loves to use them....especially on many different animals. Now she even has her own tv show where hunting is a big part of the show. We actually see her killing (and attempting to....she's a lousy shot, by the way) animals in my installments. Kind of sick if you ask me!

It's very sad that an innocent nine year old girl would lose her life possibly because of the carelessness of some politicians. Very, very sad.

Get real the shooter is a left winger.

It's irrelevant where on the political spectrum the shooter is located. He's obviously mentally ill & people like him (hundreds of thousands are as crazy as he is & currently walking out streets) are easily influensable by what our leaders & politicans say or write. People saying & writing things like what Palin & Kelly have been saying or posting need to take responsibility for their actions. I'd also go as far as saying that Sarah Palin & Jesse Kelly should currently be held on accessory-to-murder charges until they can be exhonorated.

So are you saying that you are against the "freedom of speech"?

It`s none of your business what i`m for & what i`m against.

What i`m getting from your idiotic posts is that you condone what Palin & Kelly did. Let`s open your eyes for a minute. Let`s say a merbite makes a post saying he`s putting a bounty on other merbites. Let`s say he posts that if someone harms one of those of those merbites, he`ll get a free hour with the sp of his choice. Then, next thing you know, we find out that some harm has come to one of the merbites & the person arrested states that he did so because of what he seen the post made by the merbite who put the bounty on this site. Now how would you feel about that? Freedom of speech?

You know, "GUIDO", maybe you`d be better off taking your 18 posts & staying out of this thread altogether. Doing so might prevent you from sticking your foot in your mouth & looking ridiculous. It`s rather obvious to most of us that you do not possess the intellectual capacity to post rationally in such threads. You should maybe stick to other threads where you don`t have to use the few brain cells you have left.

I`d suggest that you stick to the reviews section where you seem to have mastered the art of one-line reviews. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freedom of speech, à la Ernst Zündel ?

So are you saying that you are against the "freedom of speech"?
Most civilized countries have some kind of Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and promote free speech.

At the same time, excesses that may lead to endangering people's lives, dangerous lies (denying the Holocaust for one) and incitements to violence are still illegal in most of these same places.

Ironic that a finger is being pointed at a "left-winger" by a poster who then claims "free speech" to be stifled when the US right is responsible for the Patriot Act, the largest assault on individual freedom to hit the US in eons.

See this article on Ernst Zündel about balancing free speech and dangerous speech.
