Mine is all in the family. There was only one Archie Bunker. He was my all time favorite tv character. I still watch the re-runs and find him as funny as ever.

It's so difficult to pick just one.

M*A*S*H was certainly one of the best. I also love Seinfeld, and Family Guy.

Fawlty Towers. Nothing else even comes close....

What ? no sexy girls ?

AH well... thanks for letting us know about it though !

But since you guys come up with old ones...
I'd say Three's company (with the sexiest brunette), Duke of hazard, Charlie's angels, Wonder woman, etc...

Since then... Charmed, Desperate housechicks, etc...

As long as there a cute face and a nice a*s... otherwise why spending time on tv ? :)

Growing up, it was 'Gilligan's Island'. I must have watched every single episode over 50 times!

My all-time favorite tv sitcom has since become 'Seinfeld'.

Honorable mentions: 'Three's Company' & 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

Like most said, it is hard to pick only one. But M*A*S*H would probably get the top vote if I have to pick just one. Comedy, humanity, horror of war, hope, everything was in there.

Runner ups would include: All in the Family, which is the kind that grows on you with the years and 2nd vewings; Three's Company, Barney Miller if anyone remembers this one, and it would not be complete without Happy Days!

Gotta go with Hillstreet Blues for drama and don't laugh, Dukes of Hazard for comedy.

Though I would not categorize Hill Street... and Dukes... as sitcoms, I was a particular fan of Hill Street Blues. They touched on some poignant themes and will always remember Michael Conrad's "Hey... let's be careful out there..."

My top 5 in order would be

no.1 all in the family

no.2 Seinfeld

no.3 mash

no.4 cheers

no.5 get smart

There were so many other great sitcoms in the 60,s and 70's such as beverly hillbillies, Mary tyler Moore, barney Miller, night court, Gilligan's island, wkrp in cincinnati, the Munsters, Newhart, Taxi, Hogans heroes, threes company, a show i was only luke warm on but many people liked and several people have mentioned curb your enthusiasm and to be quite honest i have never heard of that show until i read it in this thread. It just seems to me that the new sitcoms suck compared to what we used to have. Seinfeld to me was the last really good sitcom that was on tv.

If I have to choose just one series, it has to be this one, SOAP . Filled with lunatic characters (on what other show would you get a super-sarcastic ventriloquist's dummy named Bob? or Burt the invisible impotent man, Billy Crystal the openly gay old jewish man, and on and on?) EVERYBODY on this show was crazy!!) They sent up all these story staples from regular soap operas , but jacked them up with super steroids- from a regular murder-mystery, to a mafia kidnapping, then to a latin american revolution, to an alien abduction---not too many other shows that are as diverse)

Seinfeld is a personal close second, but SOAP is the man...

And by the way, for the guys who keep submitting shows like Hill Street Blues and Dukes of Hazzard, you boys really need to look up the definition of what a SITCOM is...

I was going to say Two and a Half Men, but from reading some of the posts in the SPs think we're losers thread, I think that show qualifies as more of a documentary than a sitcom. LOL

By the way, All in the Family and Three's Company are both based on Britcoms. Till Death Us Do Part and Man About the House respectively. Both of which surpass their American counterparts by a huge margin. I've always found British sitcoms to be hugely superiour to American shows as they don't cater to the lowest common denominator like the US shows, with some exceptions, tend to do.

My fave American sitcoms are in no particular order: Taxi, Barney Miller, SOAP, WKRP in Cincinnati, All in the Family and Night Court. Cheers is just behind followed by Seinfeld and the underrated Wings. Special mention to the original Bob Newhart Show and his followup Newhart, which had the best ending of any television show, comedy or drama, in TV history. Current shows I watch on a regular basis are Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.

One show that didn't last long but was worth a watch was Stacked, staring Pamela Anderson. Well worth hunting down for a few laughs.

Finally, a show that had a great first season before being castrated by the network it was on: The John Larroquette Show. John Larroquette starred as a night manager of a bus station who was a recovering alcoholic. One of the main supporting characters was a gorgeous hooker. The first season was a great example of dark humour. In the second season they reformed the hooker into a bar manager, moved the series to the day shift and ceased all mention of the manager being a alcoholic. This led to many instances of an elephant walking through scenes as a protest to the changes. It still managed to last into it's fourth season before being cancelled. A real shame that it wasn't allowed to continue in it's original concept.

Didn't bother since we already have threads made for both tv shows an sitcoms.
