Glencross signs new deal

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=365890

Flames ink Glencross.... another free agent that wont be availavle come July 1... Not sure Calgary did a good thing here today. The $ is not out of sync for a 43 point man, (maybe a tad high but he is only 28) btw thats his best ever so far, but the no movement clause over a 4 year term is something i would of not gave to him, but kudos for Curtis for getting it. A 2.55 million cap hit for a career high 43 point man? what do you think about that?

The Flames have 3.5 mil (per capgeek.com) to spend to sign 6 players, thats not much. (but the cap has been said to be going up by about 3 million) Could they be looking to trade Iginla to rebuild and go the way like of alot of teams, with a youth movement? I doubt it, so they will be stuck with trying to sneak into the playoffs for the next few season at least. Suter did alot of damage to that orginization, i wonder if he went the the JFJ school of GM'ing?

Habs sign Emelin

Via TSN

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens announced today they have signed defenceman Alexsey Emelin to a one-year, two-way contract. A native of Togliatti, Russia, Emelin was the Canadiens' second pick (third round, 84th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but soureces tell TSN that the total compensation is $984,200 including signing bonus. There is also a provision for Emelin to play in KHL instead of AHL

"We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Alexsey Emelin," said Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier. "Alexsey is a steady, physical defenseman with strong skating ability. The experience he has acquired in the KHL over the past few years will make for a smooth transition to the NHL."

Emelin picked up 27 points in 52 games with the Kazan Ak Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) last season.

Emelin also led his team defenceman in goals with 11 - seven of which were scored on the powerplay. The 25-year-old averaged just over 21 minutes of ice time and had a plus-17 plus/minus.

In three complete seasons with the Kazan Ak Bars, the 6'2, 223 lbs defenceman totaled 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) with 200 penalty minutes in 149 games. Emelin added 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in 38 career KHL playoff games.

Emelin was part of the Russian team at the 2011 World Championship in Slovakia, and was a member of the silver medal winning Russian team at the 2010 World Championship in Cologne, Germany. He also participated in the 2007 World Championship in Moscow and was on the Russian team that won the silver medal at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Vancouver.

Leafs, MacArthur expected to resume talks

The Toronto Maple Leafs want to get left wing Clarke MacArthur locked up to a new contract, but the two sides won't pick up contract negotiations for at least two weeks.

MacArthur, 26, signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal with Toronto last summer and can become a restricted free agent on July 1.

The Leafs had opened talks during the season, prior to the trade deadline, but weren't able to agree on an extension.
Both parties are confident a deal will be agreed upon, with MacArthur's agent Don Meehan telling TFP earlier this week that negotiations should pick up "towards the end of this month."

MacArthur experienced a breakout season this past year, registering 21 goals and 41 assists for 62 points in 82 games with the Leafs.

It's believed MacArthur could ink a new multi-year deal worth around $3 million, per season.

Hal Gill re signs in Montreal

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Hal Gill has agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.25 million contract.

The Concord, Mass., native, will receive the same salary he earned with the club in each of the past two seasons.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, the 36 year-old veteran defenceman had two goals and seven assists with a minus -9 rating and 43 penalty minutes in 75 games last season.

Gill spent the past two seasons in Montreal after winning the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009.

The Canadiens will still have five other unrestricted free agent defensemen, including Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski and Roman Hamrlik.

Want to impress Brian Burke? Just blow chunks

Yes, Brian Burke is a graduate of Harvard Law and has the fancy haircut and all that, but underneath, he really is an old-school hockey grunt.

The Maple Leafs GM showed that side of his persona again on Saturday at the NHL Draft Combine.

When asked what he looks for in a prospect, other than the kid’s VO2 score or the stuff that appears on paper, Burke said he looks to see just how hard a kid is willing to push himself.

“The kid who gets off the bike and pukes, that’s more impressive to me than the kid who gets off the bike and he looks like he still has something left,” Burke said.

So there you go kids. It might be a little late, but if you want to impress Burkie, don’t be afraid to let it fly.

Burke was certainly in good form at the Toronto Congress Centre, site of this year’s draft combine. He looks fit and trim — “a little bit” he said, when asked if he’s lost weight — and he went out of his way to rag on the media or, at least, a certain member of the Toronto media, who arrived unfashionably late while Burke was giving interviews.

“You can’t show up late,” Burke snapped. “I’m done. I’m %^&*$# done here.”

Later, when approached by the same media guy for a second interview, the Leafs GM laid out one of those famous Burkesonian scowls and growled: “Now what? What the $%^& is going on now?”

And when the media guy was finally through, Burke said: “Are we done? Can I get to work now?”

But it was all in good fun. Old Burkie seems pretty content these days. And he has reason to be. His young team came on strong in the second half of the 2010-11 season, and he has two firsts and one second round pick in this year’s draft. And while none of those picks are in the top 20, at least it gives the Leafs’ GM a chance to look for a diamond or two in the rough, or even use the picks to trade up in the draft.

“We’re going to try to move up, but you’re not going to get a top-10 pick with the picks we have,” he said. “If we can trade up into the teens using one of those firsts and 39, which is our second round pick, that’s what we’re trying to do. But right now, I’d say it’s probably unlikely (to trade up), and we’re going pick three times. And we’re fine with that.”

As for the other questions about his team, Burke said he hasn’t ruled out a place on the roster next season for goaltender J.S. Giguere, who becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Giguere underwent surgery for a sports hernia a few weeks ago and is said to be recovering well, though, with younger goaltenders James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson under contract, Giguere’s spot with the Leafs is undetermined at this point.

“We’re going to wait and see. He had surgery, he thinks it went well and we haven’t ruled out a role for him,” said Burke, who values Giguere’s willingness to be a mentor for younger goaltenders in the organization. “He’s the hardest working goalie I’ve ever had, he’s a character guy, we’ll have to see if there’s something there.”

As for restricted free agent forward Clarke MacArthur, who is coming off a career season, Burke said he has had one meeting with the MacArthur’s agent, but hasn’t began negotiating a new contract as of yet. Nor would he comment on reports that the Leafs are one of the teams considered in the running to bag free agent centre Brad Richards.

Burke’s priority at this time is the draft, which will be held later this month in St. Paul, Minn. And one the toughest parts of the draft is getting a psychological read on the prospects — even though the teams sit down and interview kids at the combine. The problem, said Burke, is that the prospects are often coached by their agents on what to say when they’re asked specific questions.

“And so, you get cookie cutter answers, you get stock answers,” Burke said. “Like, we ask, ‘Who’s your favorite player?’ It’s never Eddie Shack, or a colorful guy. They’re going to say Sidney Crosby or someone that we respect and we hope that they will emulate. They’re never going to say a flake. So, some of it’s coached.”

“But it all has value,” Burke added of the combine.

All except, perhaps, the media part, though Burke did seem to enjoy that part of it on Saturday.

Burke trying to package off his 1st n 2nd rounder to land a top 3-5 pick in the Draft. I would think by now, other GMs have just stopped talking to Burke and realize if they dont do the deal with Burke theyre better off.

If Chicago had NOT dealt their 1999 3rd overall pick to Burke n his Nucks, Henrik Sedin would be a Hawk. And what did Chicago get from Vancouver, McCabe and 2000 1st rder Pavel Vorobiev. Of course Vorobiev (11th overall) was Chicago's own fault, as was Mikhail Yakubov who they took 10th overall. All hindsight, not really... a bunch of dummies were actually paid by Chicago to be Scouts, including a Director of Scouting n Player Devel.

Note to all NHL GMs with top picks, avoid Burke and hang onto ur pick.

There is no way Burke can land a 3-5 pick by dealing "JUST" a late 1st and early 2nd... He is hoping to move up into the teens but to get a 3-5 would cost ALOT more.

Coyotes deal goalie Bryzgalov's rights to Flyers

Tight cap in Philly n Ilya apparently wants highend player, top tier money, not just highend for the goalie position.

He must be smoking the same stuff as... errrr, wont go there... as Jose Reyes!

Flyers will be scrary if they find a way to sign Bryzy... theyd definitely have to clear $6mill off their books to do it. Lets see, move Pronger to longterm IR, a couple of old deadweight contracts about to fall off the books, plus move a 2 million dollar guy ... presto! They can do it.

Really like Holmgren for going after exclusive negotiating rights to UFAs yr after yr. Shows he’s got brass stones.

I do love that Mark Messier Award. Mess gets to select the finalists and pick the Winner himself. Chara, Doan n Lidstrom r the 3 finalists this yr.

Well deserved for Lidstrom. A great leader and one of the top 3 defencemen of all time (after Orr and Harvey).

Flyers will need to free up cap room to sign him... rumor has Jeff Carter on his way out of Philly... but again, just a rumor.

They should move or buy out 6 overpaid guys instead of moving Jeff Carter.
The likes of Meszaros 4M , Matt Carle 3.8M , Zherdev 2M, Leighton 1.5M , Boucher 0.925 , Briere 7M (yikes) dont justify their pay-cheques!

But if Philly had to move Carter, I would love to see him join Tampa Bay! Someone will have to replace Lecavalier soon or later... crap, even Jeff landing in Toronto would be nice to see. Carter + Kessel... hmmmmmmm...
