Here's the standard Mod8 disclaimer...

Hello everyone,

I am posting this now in preparation for the upcoming season in order for members to understand the rules in this thread and to prepare themselves for a civilized, flame free discussion on the NHL season.

The rules in this thread will be as follows: NO flame posts, NO trash talk, NO insults of any kind directed at either members or teams or hockey players. Proper team names must be used in all posts, there will be no "Scabs", "Maple Laughs" or other such terms used in this thread. This thread is for serious discussion only.

Any violation of the above rules will result in an immediate 1 week suspension. This will include any posts breaking the above rules that the poster has edited to remove the offense.

This thread will be opened for posting on the day before the first game of the season. There will also be an Official pre-season thread (subject to the same rules above) created, as well as a free for all thread which will be open for more "spirited" discussions. While that thread will be moderated for extreme personal attacks and insults, I would advise any member who is thin skinned to avoid that particular thread. :D

Thank you,

Mod 8

Started this thread to talk about the upcoming season and the return of the Winnipeg JETS via Atlanta.

It's a done deal according to TSN.ca and will see the Thrashers move to Winnipeg in time for the start of the 2011-12 NHL season.

No S**T, is today the end of the world? I 100% agree with Merlot  I like, i dont, im like, i have no idea what to say.......

Hey, all i said was congrats to the Jets for getting a team back, the two SD's are trying to turn it into what they love the most, a free for all thread only... which btw we have that already. I also thought it was a little early for a 2012 NHL thread, thats why i created a offseason thread, which would suffice til October. Oh well, i guess we have alot of places to pick and choose where to talk about HOCKEY.

Huh,

This thread is laughable. The finals haven't even started for 2010-2011, and you are already starting a thread for the 2011-2012 season.

I thought I was supposed to be the "fair weather fan" around here...and you guys were the ones who knew everything and loved everything about hockey. Since you've moved on from the NHL season that hasn't ended it's gotten pretty obvious you so-called Habs and Leafs fans care little about the "beauty of the sport", but instead really only love beating each other over the head, so you start an Official NHL thread 5 months early.

Maybe the Leafs and Habs could face each other on the greens all summer so you guys can keep the real sport you love...b*tching at each other.

Unbelievable,

Coming from the guy who (rightly so) spent the last week pointing out Burke's incompetence and failures I find your post ironic but I guess since Doc's banning you felt the need to take over his strict "do as I say, not what I do policy."

Actually, i remember one of the mods last year, when he reopened one of the hockey threads that was closed a week for bad behavior, specifically said that if g1gballsyday was gonna post in any threads on Merb that were not the free for all threads, then he would need to get a new avatar, i was included in that because at the time i had a rude Yanks lil dude peeing on a red sox logo. I complied with the Mods request, and here we are months later and g1gballsyday still has the rude avatar and has posted in non free for all threads here on merb, including this one. What gives?
Hello G1G

However, having the choice of any avatar you wish and choosing one so rude may be humorous, but it sure isn't about "talking hockey". So you are much more of an example of your own intended criticism than I, given much of your record of posting on hockey. Merlot

You know what Merlot you're right I didn't read the first post stating this was to be a no fun, humorless thread. I will have no problem staying out of it after this post just as I've had no problems staying out of others like it. In fact it's my opinion that there should only be four hockey threads anyway. One for the regular season, the playoff, the off-season, each regardless of the year, and of course the one that has been described by many as MERB's greatest thread, the Maple Leafs DEATH WATCH thread to cover their annual and inevitable failure. ;)

Regarding my avatar it is simply a joke and I'm glad you see it for what it is because honestly if anyone was truly offended by it they'd have no reason participating on a message board where members routinely describe how well a girl half their age licked their taint while giving them a rusty trombone.

As for poor Ig I've got only two comments. First you've proved once again that you are without a doubt the undisputed lightweight champion of MERB :yield: and second, is there anyway possible way you could you be even more of a whiny little wuss?

Hmmmmm,

So g1ballsday gets upset cause he is better than everyone here on Merb and feels he doesnt have to play by the rules, and im whiny? ROFL! Sniffles....Grow up pal. We were both asked last year to change our avatars as both were deemed offensive and insulting to other members, per i believe it was then Mod 8... i complied, you have not, so what, i called you out, WOW, 8 months later and only when Merlot brought it up. I was just stating a FACT that is somewhere in one of the hockey threads from last year, get over it, and again, i'm whiny, lol...

PS. I am more of a middlewight, and thanks for the champonship title :thumb: Wheres my prize money? I dont need a belt, just $$$$$$ :D

Anyways, lets get back to Hockey, can we do that? Even tho this thread is quite a bit premature.

Guys, I see discussions that are far from compatible with hockey. Please stick to the topic, with due respect to the rules. I already said it once, my fuse in sport threads will be short and it's now shortened twice already...

Wow ! I get off one week from Merb leavin' you guys alone and Doc gets banned and... you get Mod11 pissed.

Impressive. I must be telepathic now !
Don't even need to post any sh*t disturbin stuff to have fun !

I think I'll go off for another week to see who's gonna get banned

As for this thread... here's a point to have fun with :
Some parts of the US can't afford NHL teams anymore.

Why are certain guys disturbed by the pre-mature nature of the thread?! Thought those boys would've been accustomed to pre-mature by now.

Anyway, read in slow-mo... might help the e-x-p-l-a-n-a-t-i-o-n sink in ... Atlanta will be moved to Winnipeg (aka the other armpit of Canada... Hamilton being the other) for the start of the 2011-12 season. Yes, u read correctly... the same 2011-12 season content this thread is meant to house.

BTW, i personally don't think Winnipeg will get access to the Jets name since PHX owns it. Read a great suggestion that the relocated Atlanta team should be called the Winnipeg Phoenix!

This will be the best year to watch our Habs, in fact this will be the best year as a Canadian to watch hockey, why? The Canucks are arguably the best team in hockey right now who probably will win the cup, The Jets are coming back with players desperate to produce and could make it to the cup finals, the Habs have young players who had to play due to injuries from the veterans, they now have experience and will up their play a notch or two enough to win a cup. The Nordiques....oh yes, I predict that Quebec will announce their return. The Leafs, at long last it's their time to return to the playoffs, with a bit of luck they could win it.

Wow, not sure where all this is coming from but, ok. LOL.......

Good to see you posting btw, Gotsome. Lets share opinions w/o the insults and have a great season in here. Now, my opinions are that the Jets will be lucky to make the playoffs, period. Same with the Sens and Flames. The Canucks did not improve but took a small step backwords by losing Erhoff and Raffi Torres (2 players who played key roles during the season) not to mention having a sometimes very shaky Roberto Luongo another year older. The Leafs i totally agree with you that they will return to the playoffs and could surprise a few once they make it there. The Habs???? Honestly, i think they are the Canadian team with the most question marks by far. Ottawa and Calgary are likely to be bad this season, the Jets just ok, the Nucks easily make the playoffs and the Leafs should make it by taking 6th 7th or 8th spot to make it in as well.

The habs could be many things, either bad if Price gets hurt or does not steal 15 games again like he did last year, or good enuf to take 8th place, but i do not see them being a dominant team and this is coming from a Hockey fan. (putting aside my devotion to the Leafs for a second) But if they do sneak into the playoffs, then all bets are off as any team once they are "IN" can win it all. Gonna be a spectactular season tho for both Tor and Mtl fan bases, that is one thing we can agree on! I hope you continue to post Gotsome.

Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette says the NHL must ban fighting

http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Jack+Todd+must+fighting/5353724/story.html

One would think since he writes for the Montreal Gazette, the #1 reason why he wants fighting banned would be because Montreal is not a fighting team and are a small team as well, right? I am sure thats part of the montreal bias he has, but then i decided to look at who jack todd was and discovered another "reason" why.

Personally i like fighting in the game, it adds to the excitement. I have sat in MANY Nhl arenas and especially at the Bell Centre, when a fight breaks out, the roar is as loud or louder than a habs goal...... keep "dodging" jack

To be totally honest, you're entitled to your opinion, but i totally disagree that there's a link between someone who says fighting should be banned from hockey & the fact he once was a draft dodger. Those are two totally different matters. If someone is anti-war or doesn't want to be sent to battle to fight another country's war (sent by a bunch of millionaire politicians who refuse to send their own kids to battle), this is more of a political stand & personal belief and totally unrelated to the game of hockey. As a matter-of-fact, i'd bet that draft dodgers like Dick Cheney absolutely would love to keep fighting in hockey. Not only that, but they'd probably love to waterboard referees they'd deem to be incompetent had they blown a call against their own team. Okay, i'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point.

Personally, there's nothing that i like more than a good fight in a hockey game. However, upon further thought, fighting in hockey is really stupid. It's not allowed in international play & as we've seen in past Olympics, World Championships & Canada Cups, we've experienced the most exciting hockey ever without a single fight.

There's also the fact that most of these enforcers are pill-popping, steroid-abusing goons....and some of them can barely skate. Take George Laraque, for example. The guy was a joke on skates when he played in the NHL. Heck, he looked much better on skates when he competed on "Battle of the Blades". What i'm saying is that it's wrong that a goon who's there simply to fight takes away the job of a kid who can shoot & skate.

And finally, the NHL is doing its best to cope with the increase in head injuries.....most of them caused by head shots. The best player on the planet, Sidney Crosby, might not play hockey again because of post-concussion problems. Yet, the NHL still allows two goons to bash one another on the head? I saw Colton Orr take a couple of huge shots to the head last year, and i cringed when i saw it. He was hurt! As a matter-of-fact, he got clobbered by a George Parros punch & still hasnt' played a hockey game, battling post-concussion problems for the last half of this past season. Did the Leafs miss him? No. They actually played much better without him. Will he play again? Who knows? I say that it's likely, but is he one punch away from retirement? Will someone like him, who's had all those unnecessary concussions throughout their career, wind up in a mental institute in his 60's because of alzheimer's?

Like i said, i'm on the fence when it comes to fighting in the game of hockey. I love a good fight as much as anyone else. But is it morally right to keep it in the game?
