MONTREAL - A man police had been monitoring very carefully while he appeared to be making a move to take control over the Mafia in Montreal has been killed, police sources say.

Salvatore (Sal the Ironworker) Montagna, was the victim of a fatal shooting on Ile Vaudry, near Repentigny. The Repentigny police have turned over the case to the Sûreté du Québec.

Montagna was the short-lived head of the Bonnano crime family in New York until he was deported a couple of years ago. He was not a U.S. citizen and, due to a criminal record, was given a choice of returning to his native Canada — he was born in Montreal — or Italy where he grew up in Sicily. His upbringing in Sicily appeared to give Montagna old fashioned values that were welcomed by mobsters looking for leadership within the Bonnano family in New York after their leadership was decimated by the same FBI investigation in New York that also produced the arrest and conviction of Vito Rizzuto, the reputed head of the Mafia in Montreal until he was arrested and extradited to the U.S.

Police sources have said recently that Montagna appeared to be very active in assuming control over the Rizzuto Clan, following the death last year of Nicolo (Zio Cola) Rizzuto, a leader in the Montreal Mafia for decades.

Montagna was killed just two months after someone tried to kill Raynald Desjardins, a man who had close ties to Nicolo Rizzuto’s son, in Laval. Police sources have alleged that Montagna, Desjardins and Joseph (Jos) Di Maulo, another man with reputed ties to the Mafia, had spent much of 2011 trying to generate a consensus on who should take over as head of the Mafia in Montreal.
