What was the hobby like in the 80s, 70s, 60s. ( 50s if there are any geezers left )

An old guy told me of times in Montreal where you could see hundreds of girls lining the streets on St. Laurent and St. Catherine looking for business. There was no such thing as massage except from guys at Vic Tannys exercise club. ( gay ) What was it like back then?

    Dr Zook,
It is partly true. Hundreds of girls seem to be a little bit too much. My recollections date back to the very late 70's to mid 80's

A thing is sure however: you could find over 50 SW each nights on the Red Light district. Each had their own spots. The girls from the USA (mostly black hookers coming on the summer time from Buffalo, New York, Toronto, etc.) were working on the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Laurent (where there was a Harvey's and a tourist room -I guess that the tourist room is still there).

On Sainte-Catherine, up to Saint-Denis you had, on both sides of the streets, hords of hookers, locals and visitors from all around the country (Maritimes, Prairies, USA, etc.). There were also a lot of hookers on all the streets in the district between Maisonneuve, Saint Laurent, Saint-Denis and Dorchester...oups René-Lévêsque.
Each night it was a night mare to drive in that district: the men hunting for hookers were circling around that quadrilateral area.

In order to minimize this problem the municipality changed the direction of the streets (one way streets) during the early 80's. Nowadays it is impossible to do it anymore.

There was a very large selection of girls: from the ugliest to the prettiest.

There was only one price: 50$ plus the room (there were a scores of tourists rooms in that area).

Briefly, during 1984 up to 1986, there were HDH hookers on Sainte-Catherine between Peel and Mansfield (or another street, my memory is failing me here). Very good looking hookers, welll dressed and most of them were Caucasian. They were hanging on Sainte-Catherine, South side of the street, in front of the arcades, the strip club, Dutchie's record cave, etc.)
There was a tourist room nearby (I think it is still there: between Sainte-Catherine and René-Lévèsque, besides a Parking lot). You could also go with the girl to an Hotel nearby (Hotel Europa). It was 100$ for an hour.

    Probably.

But it was really less expensive in stipclubs. Dances were only 5$ and they took all their clothes off.

I was young and probably handsome then because I had my modus operandi (it worked 85% of the time): invite a girl to my table pay her 3 or 4 dances, a drink, make her laugh, ask her phone number, meet her outside and bang her for free.

I probably banged for free all the Black dancers that were working between 1980 and 1987. I finally spend 25 years of my life with a dancer that I met that way in Saint-Luc.

john9075 : this is why I say that we are still getting a hell of a deal. Anyone remember when the italian mafia was running the sex trade? The Madame Claude massage parlour in Ile Perrot? Then late 1970's early 1980 only a few massage parlours if I remember well, one called Anita in Longueuil, one in BDF called L'entracte, the Anne-Marie in Repentigny, changed name after a raid and moved to Laval on st-Martin was called the Marie-Anne,it belonged to Jean(Johnny)Morin, his wife or ex opened in Dorion the MAM.In the 60's and 70's we moved from the photographers studios disguise to the tanning salon,a well known "businessman"got his start in a chain of supposetly tanning salons with rooms in the back.then in the 80's we moved to massage parlours,Laval was a mecca then,I remember a raid of over 50 of them in one day.Chinese parlour already existed with HJ at $10. or $20. depending on the clothing rules.Price for FS at the Madame Claude was $350. went down to $150 at l'entracte or $75 at really cheap places in Laval. Then in the 90's we saw the opening of the private dancers with the well known Pussycat legal battle and then Fugace also with the self service..tips were up to $60. for watching no touching.and finally in the 2000's we saw the prices drop, the agencies multiplication and the beginning of the downward spiral in service and prices, probably going hand in hand with availability of drugs and immigrants gangs....Anything else you want to know? Oh yes the streets...corner of St-Laurent/Ste-Catherine was still around $100. plus room in the 90's,the east end always was terrible, drunks, drugs, older and fucked up and really cheap.

Is the Montreal Pool room still around? I thought they were closed down for incubating nasties in their HD steamers.
