Texas teacher sentenced to five years in prison for having sex with five students

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...prison-for-having-sex-with-five-students?lite

The trial began earlier this week with graphic testimony including text messages and a cell phone video that showed one of the alleged sexual incidents. The prosecution wrapped up their case Thursday before closing arguments began Friday morning.

The five victims all testified to having a sexual relationship with the married mother of three in her Arlington home between April and May of 2011. All five of the students were in Colleps' senior English class in the spring of 2011 and all of the victims were at least 18 when the incidents occurred.

Despite their age, Texas law forbids sexual relationships between teachers and students, even if the students are legal adults and consent to the relationship. Several of the victims testified Thursday to not wanting to testify in the trial with one of them saying he didn't want to press charges.

Anybody else get the feeling these five student "VICTIMS" had a lot of fun having sex and making videos with a married teacher? Five years for sex with legally responsible adult students likely enjoying everything? Why not just ban the teacher from ever working in schools again, especially since the students didn't want this?

No doubt the woman is an idiot unfit to be a teacher. If she wanted to fool around there were numerous options without abusing her position as a caretaker basically. But five years for sex with consenting adults who don't seem to have wanted to press charges. The reals victims are the husband and his children. The students are almost just as guilty of exploiting the situation in my opinion, except they weren't public servants with the responsibility of educating others.

She's a cheater, who cares how many years she is put away for. Now those poor kids will be without a mother for 5 years, and the husband will be stuck with everything.

Cheater is not a crime, if you considered cheater as an unforgivable crime and must deserve to be punished, well my friend 99% of our merbistes had already been in jail.

I have to agree that 5 years in prison is extreme since all of the "victims" were 18 or over.

However, you have to ask, why are all of these women teachers seducing their students in high school? I've seen it in the news all over the place. It's silly for them to cross that line.

What woman would not be tempted, with her husband serving oversea and surrounded by young studs all day (meaning her, not the husband). It's stupid, but passion often make us disregard consequences (that's where babies come from).

If I was a teacher and had the opportunity to have group sex with 5 hot legal-age students... Well, I'm just glad I don't have to deal with that kind of temptation.

Well good for her! Sure hope she had many fabulous orgasms. Too bad though it happened in the state of Texas. As we know it, Texas is retarded. I can't believe in this day and age that consenting adults go to jail for having sex.

Texas is not retarded. The law is an over-reaction to the number of teachers who have had sex with their students in the last 5 years. Many high school seniors turn 18 before graduating. Some are 17 when they graduate. Texas just extended the previous law until the students graduated.

FYI, many states have an age of consent of 16, except the age of consent is moved to 18 for teacher student relationships. It's just like the age of consent in Quebec. It's not 18 (isn't it 16?), except for the case of SP's, where it is 18.

I think Texas has the right to make their own laws, but I do think that the law and punishment should not be as stringent as when the "victim" is under 18. It probably should be a misdemeanor and the woman teacher should be doing probation at the most.

Also, I think the sentence was cumulative. If she had been with only one it would have been a much shorter time.

...except they weren't public servants with the responsibility of educating others.

She certainly gave those boys an education  I prefer that to teaching them creationism.

Yes,

Good point. Being of consenting age cannot excuse public servants given the trust of being caretakers and abusing their position.

There's two tragedies in my view. The woman teacher inexcusably abusing her caretaker position and destroying her family life, and the state of Texas pushing this sentence despite the wishes of the adult responsible students who neither wanted to testify nor prosecute. At least the sentence should be suspended and probation given.

I am also disgusted with the situation where these adult boys, who very likely knew the law and that the woman had a family, freely chose to ignore all of that just so they could have a notch on their penises for fucking a teacher with few personal consequences if any.

Around Montréal...
The main problem is the conflict of interest.

Did the students passed their courses with this teacher because their were having sex with?

When someone is on a position of authority on someone else, whatever the age, there is an ethic of work that's claiming to not go thru some personal limits.

That's the reason why the teachers should not go partying/clubbing/dinning or develop very personal friendship with their present students during the time of their studies, and this is the same thing in any other kind of profession where someone could decide, by example, for the promotion of a subaltern.

The fact that's a male or a female who is crossing the line does not matter.

The thing I found surprising, is to have "won 5 years of jail" for this... Ouf! Texas take it really seriously...

I am curious to know, if something like that went in Quebec province, how it would have been dealt with?

In that kind of case I think it does not matter whether the boys press charge or not. It's a breach of work and moral ethic and not just a crime against a person. What they call a public order crime or consensual crime (like prostitution in the US). Of course if they did press charge it would just add more charges.

Just wondering if the same judgement would have applied if it had been a man with 5 young girls.

No, I was just inverting genders in the same case. But the same thing applies with minors. I may be wrong, but I think we tend to apply a differential thinking on these issues. True, the lady was harshly condemned, but I think that if you switched genders in the story, the guy would have been crucified.

Hello Gugu,

Though today there is more theoretical equality, the old gender biases still persist. Male abusers are still looked at more harshly and male "victims" are still taken more lightly when it comes to sexual offenses. In fact, women and even young girls can be as abusive and despicable as any man. Yet, a guy doing the same thing as the woman subject in this thread would definitely be more offensive to the public for abusing his position with 18-year-old girls than the reverse.

The woman subject here was nuts to do this, abusing her position of trust, throwing away her career, damaging her family. But I find the blindly moralistic law and it's application that failed to account for the situation where these boys were victims only because of being under the care of a public institution the regulation around it, but in actual fact it was a mutual exploitation in my opinion, and that should have been considered regardless of the sentencing regulations.

I agree with the laws purpose to prevent abuse, but each case needs to be evaluated.

really,

If the "teacher" were having sex with 5 stranger over the age of consent, there would be no charges files.

The sentence might be considered "excessive" but the two things that may be factors may be in play in for the sentencing:
1.) This was not a one-time-deal. It was a repeat occurrence
2.) The judge may have imposed a stricter sentence to "make her an example" to discourage others teachers from engaging (or thinking about) similar encounters. Judges love to do this in high profile cases.

It's not that she shouldn't be a teacher. She is just teaching the wrong subject. Clearly, Sex Education is her forte.

If it were a male teacher with 5 female students, he would have gotten 10-15 years. Reverse double standard. Young women are generally considered more "vulnerable". Based on merb... I'm NOT so sure
