Hello all,

I've been dreading doing this. I really, really, REALLY don't want to. But I think for "someone's" sake (you know who I mean) we need to have an answer to the question for the ages.

So who is the most famous Quebecer WORLDWIDE?

If you were born on this planet YOU are qualified to vote (members, mods, escorts, agency owners, second generation extra-terrestrials).

VOTING FOR EITHER DOES NOT MEAN YOU LIKE THAT PERSON.

God help us.

pfffsssst,

Merlot

Since the poll is public I will NOT cast my vote fearing some may think I like her.

It should be obvious that any merb poll is not representative of a world wide view. It's not even representative of the population of Montreal because we are a very small, particular demographic.

Not only would a merb poll be pointless because of demographic issues but the poll is worded wrongly.

We want to know who is the best known, not who people think is the best known. I'd guess if you ask which person you have heard of and how well you know them you would get near 100% results on both. You want to ask an international balanced and large group that question. Do you know A, do you know B and a lot, a little, not at all.

Anything else is just peanut butter jelly time.

find me a forum with members mostly from Alaska or mongolian and ill stick a poll in there, anytime! :D

So an Alaskan, a Mongolian and a Pole walk into a bar. They walk up to the barkeep, buy some drinks, talk to some hotties and had a good time?

Ha ha ha ha ! this one is so good !

Looks like EB gets his 'world' vibes on Merb.

Oye ! Oye ! Oye ! Now hear this ! If it's on Merb than it means the whole world !

For the love of God I couldn't even write this in Big Bold red letters... ha ha ha !
You could even put it on the New York Times and it would still be futile !

But hey ! have fun getting all upset over freakin Dion ! Mwouhahahahahaha !!!!!

Well thanks EB. I had my good laugh today !

Keep it up Merlot !
Forgot to thank you too, while choking on my beer !

Sh!t, we should have done this for Mitt vs Obama 2.

Wow! The nerds and the trekkies (Shatner's fans) against the schmaltzy Dion's fans!

Even if I really don't like her, I'll cast my vote for Céline...

(Techman, speaking of guitar players, do you know Sonny Greenwich? He was considered by the jazz aficionados to be one of the best guitar player coming from Montreal. In my youth I used to hang out with him at the legendary Nelson Simon (another guitar legend) Jazzbar - which was located on Ontario street).

(Another great jazz guitar player associated with Montreal was the Belgian René Thomas who lived in Montréal during the late 50's and parts of the 60's, during the era of hardbop)

I am not even going to vote because Shatner has no shot in this poll. French canadians identify a lot more with Celine then they do with Shatner so therefore a poll done on a montreal board is worthless. If you ask quebecers who the most famous french canadian is Celine will win in a landslide ask this same question in other parts of the world and in my opinion Shatner wins.

Bingo, nothing more needs to be said. I already said this about a thousand times in the other thread.

Like every polls it is totally representative of the 21 persons who will vote

I don't know how to vote because I am uncertain how you define famous here. Is it the one that is the most known and recognized by everyone (Celine), or is it the one with the most actual fans (probably Celine)? Or the one most likely to still have fans in the year 324521 (Celine).

I think I pick Celine and I am being totally impartial here.

BTW there is something weird: before I voted, I could see peoples names in the votes, but after voting myself I can't see them anymore!

As expected,

You shout about the firm accuracy of a guitar poll that serves a narrowly defined niche, much narrower than the population of a province, a niche that cannot possibly represent the overall population, then shout down a poll which might have lesser flaws. As Alyssa indicated, you pick and choose without standards.

As for this board poll encompassing French Canadians and the theory that will bias the vote for Celine, Techman as an example of others is French Canadian and he voted otherwise. Alyssa is German and doesn't like Celine but recognizes the size of her fame. Some are Canadian from outside Quebec like Iggy who voted for Celine, many are Americans like me.

Frankly the messages in your view of French Canadians, in general insinuating some distasteful prejudices, show you have your own. If that is not the case then your view of credibility is self-serving.

In any case, you never made a poll because you were worried of anything, credible or not, that would contradict your desired outcome. It was not because your wanted to stick to standards avoiding bias, because you have sought those out and approved them when they serve your goal.

I'm voting for Celine because her talent (which is her fame), however you like it, is far more her own. Shatner's popularity depended much more on the efforts in writing, production, directing, acting support, brand branches, and marketing range of so many others. There's far more much product support for Shatner than one person who in the end has her voice to rely on.

truly,

Merlot

A narrowly defined niche? We have members who are young teens, college students, university students, members of the military, lawyers, teachers, truckers, computer techs, right up to rock stars, you name it, from all over the world on that board. People from all walks of life play guitar, there are close to 200 million guitar players in the world. That's hardly a narrow demographic.

You are voting for Celine because she has more talent, sorry that's for another debate. Your poll question was, who is the most famous quebecer not who has the most talent. The most famous quebecer world wide is in my opinion Shatner.

In my youth I used to hang out with him at the legendary Nelson Simon (another guitar legend) Jazzbar - which was located on Ontario street

That brings back memories. The Simon brothers! I used to go there too in the late seventies. I also liked Emery chez Dumas not far on Saint-Denis. But I was, over all, a Rising Sun aficionado. I remember Doudou was slack with us on the second set cover charge to keep some guys in. Joe Pass used to come once in while to give solo performances on week days. Mc Coy Tyner came a few times. So did Elvin Jones and Yusef Lateef. Also saw Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy, Big Mama, Art Blakey and many others. Boy, I would trade any Celine ticket for a night at the Rising Sun back in time.

What a silly and pathetic battle: Céline or William Shatner? Who gives a shit about that.

As you said Gugu I would also trade any Céline ticket for a night when the jazz scene was thriving in Montreal.
How many nights I spent at The Rising Sun! I still have vivid recollections of that jazz Mecca: Elvin Jones quartet, Sonny Stitt, Bill Evans, AACM, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, Art Pepper, Phil Woods,Sonny Fortune, etc.
When Doudou Boicel moved to another location - which was called the Rockhead Paradise on St-Antoine Street - I remember a night when Dizz was playing in Montreal. Between the sets Dizz, told us that whe should spend some money on the booze in order to help Doudou because, as Dizz added, « Ya know Doudou pays weekly....very weakly!»

The best concerts I saw at the Jazz bar: Pepper Adams; and a gig where Tal Farlow played a magical rendition of Django Reinhardt's Nuage. All the guitar players or aficionados were listening speechless...

LOL! funny thing is everyone saying Celine is the more famous Quebecor also say they like "Shatzy" better!

Yes simply because he's funny. Dion isn't.
Also it was not really expected this guy who was taking his acting role so seriously in Star Trek to take on funny roles.
His life also is touching. He has done so much good too.

It's easy to like Shatner.

But hey it's not who is more 'popular' it's who is the most famous !

And this is where guys like EB, Techman, etc... don't get it !
They simply can't understand one of the many concept of fame like fame by association once again.

Going back during Star Trek for instance.
Shatner (Capt. Kirk) became famous because of Spock who with his pointed ears got world wide fame for Star Trek.
And still even by association the name Spock coming from a world wide known Doctor Spock helped gather fame thru all levels of people even those who didn't give a sh!t about this kind of subject.

Right smack out of the Arms race and the race to the moon, Star Trek got world wide fame for which Capt. Kirk and Spock characters were surely known to everybody on this earth apart some tribes living in Amazonia or Africa....

But once again as close minded people do.... they simply forget to take into account how earth's population evolved since and how today's fame isn't the one back 20, 30 or even 40 years ago.

You could have a Million follower on Twiter and be on a lot of tv shows, radio whatever or even getting your own app with Apple.
And you simply can't compete with fame thru music, concert and tv shows put together specially when it's targeting a lot bigger range of audience and their respective ages.

Sit down with any old lady in Seoul today and ask her if she knows the name Celine Dion once she listen to her music.
Then show her the picture of Shatner or even Capt. Kirk and she will seriously ask herself who the f*ck is this guy.

Same for kids.
Do you know how many kids don't even know and never saw the original cast of Star Wars ?
Ask them about E.T. (at the time - the most known movie in the world).

Billions were not even born when Star Wars was a world phenomen let alone Star Trek.

Go in Nigeria, Turkey, Poland, or South Africa... play the song and ask if they recognize Dion ?
Then play a Star Trek and see if you get the same result.

The median age in the developing world was about 25 years in 2000 (12 years ago), while for the developed world it was 37 years.

Do you know how many 30 years and less don't even know about the disco era or the 'heavy metal' ?
Do you actually believe that they know about Star Trek instead the Transformers, Avatar or even the Matrix ?

How many of you guys were able to bring your girlfriend to see a Star Trek movie vs. how many of your girlfriend made you listen to Dion or even brought you to see the damn Titanic movie because it was the movie of the year ?

So yeah Shatner is more fun but he isn't more famous.
