Bill 14 is just the PQ playing politics to bash the Anglos to please the separatist. In the short run it will make it look like the PQ are doing something, in the long run it will force Anglos an Allos to speak more french, become more bilingual and open up more opportunities for these people in the future and take away opportunities from unilingual francophone.

What is new about Bill 14 that has not already been done?

Very well said Zatara!!!

In the long run unilingual francophones are the ones being hurt here as they will be limited in their opportunities.

Immigrants who are forced into french schools will only be better off in the long run as they will be able to speak 2 sometimes 3 languages namely french, their mother tongue, and english.

This Bill is another reason why Quebec is the most taxed and most in debt province....

Completely out of context with this thread but I would like to add that Quebec is also very corrupt. With these very high taxes Quebec's infrastructure is crumbling, we are still using the original metros from the 1960's making it the oldest subway in operation, etc.. This province makes no sense at all.

WE pay high taxes and the politicians waste it on things like Bill 14 to show the separatist that that are there for them. Thank God there are very few separatist around these days. Generally when I meet them, they are of the lower class hoping to have a better life on the backs of the tête carrée. Since the election of the PQ, I just had one encounter with one of these idiots that thought that their day has arrived where they are in control again and they will be Maîtres chez nous in Quebec.

Which is ironic because the politicians they are counting on to give them a "better life", send their kids to private ENGLISH schools to give THEM more opportunities while making it impossible for the average French Quebecois to send their kids to English public schools to give them the same opportunities to work in any other language other than French.

It just seems that the PQ is spending more time and money strengthing language laws than doing anything to strengthen the economy.

It just gets discouraging hearing the PQ beat it's drum with their nonsense and this just keeps Quebec from reaching it's true potention.

Hey just a few random bits and questions from an outsider. I am in no way trying to start anything, I just have a slightly better sense of history than the average dolt and I am very curious to hear some Canadian opinions on a topic that I know very little about.

1. What do you call the French and Indian Wars? Does it depend on what part of Canada you are from?
2. I LOVE the song "Acadian Driftwood" by the band.... The Band. Really a bittersweet song about having to relocate because "of what went down on the Plains of Abraham."
3. The French lost that war like 250 years ago. They know that right? Has any other losing side ever resisted assimilation for that long while being completely surrounded by a not-too-hostile opposing culture?
4. Just so, I am clear, has English speaking Canada ever done anything truly malicious to French-speaking Quebecers like Australia with the aborigines, Irag and Turkey with Kurds, U.S with Natives and slaves, Japan in China? Am I missing some big Canadian genocide, or are the slights more about language, culture, independence, and (I'm sure) money?
5. I saw that movie Mesrine, and I had no idea that there were machine gun toting french radicals running around in the 70s! they never get to that in American High school. How accurate was that movie? Were most groups just opportunistic thugs and criminals or was there really armed conflict?
6. all the comments here pretty much imply that separatist rhetoric basically just gets people elected and riles the base. Is that pretty much the consensus view from the English-speaking side?

Hey thanks in advance for any clarity. I must admit, question 1 has been on my mind since discovered this board
.. well at least on the small part of mind not occupied by the other "issues" of the site!
