I'd like to get feedback from anyone who has stayed at the Omni hotel in Mtl.

Is there an access key policy for entrance? How are the rooms, etc.

Any input is appreciated.

donnyb, as far as 4 stars go I would rate it a notch below the Vogue but definitely better than the Hilton Bonaventure. It's been a while since I stayed there but no elevator key policy was in effect. There is a Chinese restaurant on the basement level, Zen, which is very good but has a limited menu.

Rooms come with a loveseat and a telephone in the bathroom as well as a full length mirror adjacent to the bed, suitable for viewing your own activities. :)

Thanks for all your input. I was debating between the Omni and the Hilton Bonaventure for my next trip, but it sounds like I may need to wait for the renovations to be done before I should booked.

donnyb,

The Hilton Bonaventure sucks!!!!!!!! Priceline should demote it to a 2.5 star. If you enjoy being made to feel like a laboratory mouse, go ahead and book there. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Even without the needed renovations, the Omni is an easy choice over the Hilton Bonaventure.

EB is right on. The Hilton Bonaventure does suck! I hate the damn place! It feels like you're in a maze when you're in there. Actually, it is a maze!! More often than not, you'll have to walk what feels like a mile just to get to your room. The last time i went there, my back had been acting up for the past few days, and i struggled just to make it to my room each time i'd walk into the building. I finally had no choice but to ask the front desk to switch me to a closer room due to recent lower back surgery. The rooms aren't nothing special either, and have a very dark feel to them. I go limp the minute that i walk into one of those rooms!

But the hotel does have it's advantages, mostly location. It's next to the Train Station, the 'underground city', and across the street from the airport bus terminal. It's a short walking distance from the Bell Center and many swimming pool enthusiasts rave about the facilities there.

Bryson:

(1) I continually got lost walking to and from my room, felt like the mouse in "Flowers for Algernon"; (2) Rooms are dark; (3) see JaJ post. Whomever designed this building did not have a hotel in mind. The signage is poor. Just say no to this place, it ain't worth it........................

Gentlemen,

Thanks for all your input regarding the Omni and Hilton Bonaventure. I was researching for some airfare and hotel packages, and these two options intrigued me, although the Omni package was pricier by several hundred dollars.

Anyhow, as I read your input, it made me decide to stick with and book with one of my favorite 3 star hotels, the Delta Montreal, instead.

As I am awaiting for my trip in the not too distant future, I feel quite anxious and excited...as if a kid who's about to enter a candy factory again after having been deprived of his sweets for way too long.

Christmas Experience at Omni - Mont Royal

I know that this thread is a little old but I couldn't find a more appropriate thread to post my thoughts about the Hotel Omni - Mont Royal.

After checking out the rate that I could get my normal hotel for in order to see some SPs after Christmas, I decided to give Priceline a try and bid on a 4 star hotel and it was accepted by the Omni - Mont Royal.

I found the hotel to be nice but I preferred my usual hotel for personal reasons even though Priceline ranks my usual hotel as a 2.5 star and gives the Omni - Mont Royal a 4 star rating.

I stayed at one of the non-smoking rooms right in front of the elevator. In terms of size, I was satisfied with the size of my room. My room didn't have a balcony (not sure if the other rooms do since this was the first time that I was staying there).

When checking in, the front desk gives you a magnetic keycard as well as a regular key (for the minibar fridge/cooler). The first thing that I suggest to anyone checking into this hotel is to open up the minibar fridge/cooler and make sure that everything listed on the sheet of paper inside the minibar is actually there. The price of the drinks charged are outrageous (but what else is new). Just as examples: A small vodka bottle (amount of a shot) will set you back $8.75+taxes. For the price that the hotel charges you for a small bottle shot of vodka, you can go to the SAQ which is very close on Ste-Catherine and purchase a 500ml bottle of the same vodka. A Tropicana ~300ml orange juice will set you back around $4.00+taxes. For that price, going to the big drug stores (Jean Coutu or Pharmaprix) on Ste-Catherine, a 1.89 litre of cartoon of the same Tropicana orange juice can be purchased at a little more than that same price. Softdrinks in a regular can size format is around $3.00+taxes if my memory is correct (you can get a 2 litre bottle of softdrink at that price). The next thing that you should check is the snackbar which isn't locked. In my room, it was located in the television stand. Make sure that you have everything listed on the card and report any discrepancies immediately to the front desk. My issue with the minibar is that it keeps things cool but does not keep things cold.

I neglected to verify the items and was overcharged on the "incidentals" when I checked out. I had used 2 of the vodka bottles but they also charged me for something else that I didn't use and the SPs that I saw didn't use. I had used the orange juice during my encounter but replaced it immediately after my date ended so the person that counts the items in the minibar every afternoon did not have a chance to notice. I complained about the extra charge when I arrived back home and they issued me a credit for the charge that I disputed (I only agreed with the 2 vodka charges since the orange juice was replaced within 1 hour after the SP left in the evening so only the SP and I knew that we used the orange juice). They informed me that the extra charge was for a 1 litre bottle of water which I never used and didn't have a clue about. The only thing that I did notice was that when the person came in the afternoon to check the items in the snackbar and minibar, besides replacing the 2 small vodka bottle shots, he also placed a 1 litre bottle of water inside the television stand which wasn't there when I had checked in.

The room that I was staying in had some issues which I didn't notice until later in the evening. The first thing was that there was not enough power outlets near the table adjacent to the television set. In order to plug in my laptop, I had to either remove the television plug or the desklamp plug. Another thing regarding my room is that 50% of the electrical outlet inputs were broken or it wasn't the correct size. I noticed this in the evening when I wanted to charge a few items. When I plugged in my cellphone charger to an electrical outlet, my cellphone charger plug would fall out of the outlet. There was nothing wrong with my cellphone charger plug because I've used it and never had any issues with it slipping or falling out of the electrical outlet. Also, when I swapped the power cables into the different outlets (like moving the night-stand radio cable from the top outlet to the bottom outlet, it would also fall out).

In the bathroom, the items not found in most of the other hotels that I've stayed at included a bathroom scale, a bathrobe, a magnifying face mirror, and a special red light with timer.

The gym facilities are the best gym facilities in a hotel that I've stayed at. They have about 6 treadmills, a few cross trainers, a few stairmasters, free weights, etc. They also had a heated outdoor swimming pool that people were actually using in December. Another thing that they had was a heated whirlpool which felt very nice.

I'm not crazy about their parking where I believe that it is around $25 some odd dollars per day for valet parking (doesn't include tipping the valet driver when he brings your car) which allows for multiple in/out throughout the day or $17 per day for self parking indoor/underground parking about a block away which does not allow for multiple ins/outs.

They have free unencrypted wireless internet so absolutely no hassles in trying to connect (with having to worry about usernames and passwords and encryption keys). The only thing to worry about with unencrypted wireless internet in terms of the user is that people monitoring the network can see what you are doing (i.e. what webpage you're going to, what passwords you're entering if not going through https, etc.). The speed/connection/strength was consistantly very good although they blocked me from connecting directly to my home network but I've noticed a few hotels are doing this now. I found a way around it by first connecting to the VPN at work and while connected to the VPN at work to then tunnel into my home network.

The Hilton Bonaventure is labyrinth-like with long dark corridors. Also, there is way too much noise from the corridors which enters the rooms.

My routine there is to let her in, close the door behind her and then open the closet door to add another layer between the room door and the inner room.

The one good thing about it is she needn't go through a central lobby to access the rooms. She steps out of the elevator and can come directly to your room.

Also, that outdoor heated pool is a novelty. It can be below freezing and you can be outside in the water.

The Omni requires that she go in through the main lobby to access the elevators.

I saw someone there once (someone I'd seen numerous times). She wasn't in a hurry to go anywhere afterwards, suggested we have a drink at the bar so we get dressed. take the elevator downstairs and have a drink. It was a nice touch to cap off a really amazing session.

They DO lock the door to the Omni bar late at night. I'm not sure when it is.

Other than that, the Omni is my first choice due to the fact that Internet is free.

A minor complaint: the location is a tiny bit out of the way, but the Peel Metro is nearby.

Yes but the location of the front desk and/or check in/out desk is quite a few metres away from the front door where the doorman stands. When the SP walks straight through the front door. on her left is the lobby where people check in/out. If she keeps heading straight, the elevators are just ahead. At the distance that the check-in/front desk is from the front door, no one working at the front desk will get a good look at the SP. The only person who probably gets a good look at the SP is the doorman.

A few hotels have the front desk right at the entrance of the hotel. Any person going to the elevators must walk past the front desk. An example of a hotel like this is the Hotel Du Fort. I've never stayed there but I've walked by quite a few times.

If you check out the Omni's web site, there is an excellent virtual reality photo, which shows you the layout of the lobby.

Taking Lives (2004) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364045/goofs

- and here are some goofs from IMDB:

# Errors in geography: When Scott is eating breakfast in the restaurant with the other detectives, a French-style police siren can be heard in the background. Canadian police sirens sound just like their American counterparts.

# Factual errors: The three lead police investigators all speak with Parisian French accents. Quebec French is as distinct from Parisian French as British English is distinct from North American English.

# On the way to Mont Laurier from St-Jovite, Matt tells Martin that he's going to Seattle. Matt would have had to go towards Montreal in order to go to Seattle by bus - Mont Laurier is in the opposite direction

# Errors in geography: Although the movie is supposed to be taking place in Montreal, a police officer is wearing a "Ville du Quebec" uniform while Chateau Frontenac (also Quebec City) is shown in the background.

# Errors in geography: The police helicopters landing at the Moncton (New Brunswick) train station are Sûreté du Québec (Quebec provincial police) helicopters. Even if the SQ were authorized to carry out an intervention in New Brunswick, Moncton is over 200 kilometres from the Quebec border - there's no way those helicopters could have gotten there in the 20 minutes the police said they had.

# Errors in geography: While the movie is set in Montreal, Quebec, several scenes were filmed in Quebec City some 150 miles north east from Montreal. The bridge scene and Le chateau Frontenac are in Quebec city not Montreal

# Factual errors: After Duval is killed in the gallery he is referred to as "Agent Duval". Canadian law enforcement does not have an "Agency".

Angelina Jolie stayed there a few years back when she was shooting a movie in town, back when she was married to Billy Ray Thornton and wore a vial of his blood as a necklace

One night when she was staying there (Norman Jewison & David Peterson were also there that night...worked out with them in the gym at the same time),I mistakenly got the fire alarm to come on in my room & a minute or two later,it triggered off the main fire alarm in the building, likely waking up everyone who had been in bed since 11pm. I wonder if Angelina has stayed there since that infamous night? :D

I also bumped into Andre Agassi several times a year-and-a-half ago during the Rogers Cup which is usually held in August. He cracked a joke one evening when we were going up the elevator....when it stopped at a floor on our way up, we could hear a baby crying. As the elevator door shut, he looked at me and said: "Boy, someone's sure having a bad day." Boy did i have a good laugh! :D

By the way, the Omni is the proud owner of possibly the worse looking bedspread in the entire city. I can't stand that greenish color & i usually try to hid it under the bed when i'm awaiting a female guest!

I like the red light in the bathroom. It creates a sauna-like effect that keeps you warm as you get out of the shower.

I, for one, actually don't like the phone in the bathroom. I'd be somewhat concerned about SPs making all kinds of phone calls with that.

felt out of place at the omni in montreal. service was good. felt like everyone needed a tip tho. i don't like snacks left in the room either. nothing like a box of crap to try to keep from eating. nice view of mt royal and magil u. got bitched at by a women in an elevator for taking her room. don't want to say that everyone staying in the hotel was a jerk. she was for sure tho.

liked the douch potty in my room. never saw one before. the bathrooms are cool.

Yeah... I forgot about the Omni Mont Royal having a phone in the bathroom in my evaluation between the hotel bathrooms that I've normally stayed in and the Omni's bathroom. Of course the Omni bathroom also has a hair dryer but almost all the hotels that I've stayed at have a hair dryer.

I didn't think about SPs making calls in the bathroom... good point. Although most polite SPs would ask before doing anything like using the phone (or smoking). I also think that SPs would much rather use their own cellphones (which they carry with them) as opposed to secretly using the phone in the washroom since when you check out of the hotel, you get a print-out of all the outgoing calls that were made in your hotelroom... and most SPs probably don't want you to know who they are calling.
