MONTREAL - Former Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve said he left Quebec because of the province’s language laws, business climate and the general “morose ambiance.”

In an exclusive interview with QMI Agency, Villeneuve, who works as an F1 analyst on French and Italian television, said he “no longer felt at home” in Quebec.

He recently sold his luxurious home in one of Montreal’s wealthiest neighbourhoods and is now living in Andorra, a microstate that is known as a tax haven, located in the Pyreneese mountains between France and Spain.

“My leaving had nothing to do with taxes,” Villeneuve said. Rather, he said he didn’t appreciate Quebec’s “evolution,” which he said reminded him of France.

“Everything bad about France was transferred to Quebec,” he said. “The social ills, the student protests ... The climate is such that people hesitate before investing in Quebec.”

He blamed government regulations for scaring off investors, and said he didn’t want his three children to live in the “morose ambiance” in Quebec that “blocks its future.”

In particular, Villeneuve targeted the province’s language laws, which legislate the use of the French language. He said it’s up to parents to teach their children how to speak French.

The former F-1 driver will be in Montreal in two weeks for the Canadian Grand Prix where he’ll likely draw criticism for his recent remarks on Quebec.

Villeneuve also received the wrath from student movement leaders last spring when he invited striking students to “stop protesting and go back to school.”

jack off please
dont insult MY intelligence
you stand for absolutely nothing but greed
let me know who your sponsors are and I wont buy a single product.
let me know what exactly in Andorra makes you angry.
if you live someplace where everyone is happy and rich,
you live with fuckheads like yourself.

I have nothing against athletes or entertainers who choose not to live someplace because of a high tax rate.
but to say "its not the taxes" and live in a tax haven, then you are a human fraud.

Derek Jeter lives in low tax Florida.
a few years ago when the NY State tax authority sent him a bill for living most of the year in high tax NY,
he almost immediately paid the bill and adjusted his scheduled to prove that he now spends more than half the year outside of NY.
celebs are fleeing California for its huge tax rate for people lucky enough to make more than $1 mil a year.

the best I can get
I totally agree with CapRenault. He speaks and seems to think as a french man from France because even though he was born in St-Jean sur Richelieu, he grew up in Europe.
On another hand I totally disagree with CapRenault and with Jacques Villeneuve excuses because the social and economical situation of Québec is much brighter than the one in France. Have you been there lately...Do you listen to the news...I was there in january and I do listen to the news myself. Mr Villeneuve is a young millionaire with an unclear national identity trying to bullshit us.

Yeah, people where crazy about him because back then he was top dog for the championship... the last time i think somebody from quebec was in F1 and a top contender was his father... So of course they had to support him and when he won, people where happy and all. But like you said, he always speaked with a french accent and never felt much like a quebecois, so honestly i don't care much he want to elsewhere... Thanks to him for what he did for the quebec in F1, but i won't "miss him"

As for student protest tough, im all 100% with him... at least he had the guts to say what a lot of people wanted to say but feared it would hurt there career. So bravo for that.

I'm afraid that this is incorrect. Athletes working in the US pay taxes where they earn their income, based on the number of days a player works in a state. If he wanted to avoid paying tax on half of his income, he could have signed with the Marlins or Rays. Like all other professional ballplayers, Jeter pays state income tax to every state in which the Yankees play.

In fact, Jeter built St. Jetersburg to be near a) the water, b) the warm weather and c) the Yankees Spring Training headquarters.

I do not think all of his reasons were not false, Quebec does have a poor government for investors to come here but it is also the highest taxed place in North America I think. And the more money you have the more you want to save, who would want to give 50% away to the government but he should have been truthfull.

Rumples, Florida has no income tax. I think you are deemed a resident if you spend at least 6 months there. Jeter moved there for the reasons you mentioned, privacy, and also to reduce his level of taxation. There is also an income tax on NYC residents that he has avoided in addition to NY state income tax.

A few years ago when Eliot Spitzer was Attorney General, the States of New York and Connecticut waged a legal war over taxation of CT resident commuters who work in NYC. Here are some articles framing the issues of the commuter tax as well as the Spitzer retaliatory lawsuit over the CT sales tax rebate program:

http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/n-y-takes-conn-commuter-tax-article-1.854995
http://www.ag.ny.gov/press-release/spitzer-connecticut-play-fair-tax-rebate-program

The threat of a New York City commuter tax on CT residents is still in the news:

http://westport.patch.com/groups/announcements/p/an--proposed-nyc-commuter-tax

Connecticut is like a mini-Quebec, one of the most heavily taxed States in the USA.

Beav, it doesn't matter where you reside, but where you earn your income. Ballplayers pay state income tax to many states. When the Yankees play the Twins on the road, their players are deemed to have earned that portion of their income in Minnesota and are responsible to that state for income earned there. When the Yankees play the Rockies on the road, their players are deemed to have earned that portion of their income in Colorado and are responsible to that state for income earned there. I doubt that many players file their own income tax returns.

Come on. Yes Villeneuve is a special guy but we have to give him credit for saying what most people think. He did the same in F1 and he was criticized but when you look back at the message he was trying to send the f1 management at the time, he was right.

He came back here in Montreal because he wanted to and decided to leave for the reasons he mentioned and if I could, I would do the same.

52% tax plus other taxes at the store. No mayors in major cities and the Charbonneau commission..... We are being robed and the gov will never give us back that money. Same for the Gommery commission.

I better stop because I will be mad all day

Anyways, Jacques is special. We like him or not but he has guts and more people should be like this instead of our Pauline Marois going out on the street with the students to get their votes and change her mind once she is elected.

I said I would stop ...

Sorry but i don't see where Villeneuve don't use diplomacy. What he say's is just the fact, like it or not.

The same people who are angry & criticize Villeneuve (Newtown) for snubbing Quebec are the same ones who adored him & hailed him as a hero back when he won the Indy 500 & later the F1 championship.

I appreciate the fact he speaks his mind. And he says is often the truth, like it or not.

The Quebec economy is in the shit hole. That's a fact. The taxes are among the highest in North America, if not the highest. This is one of the main reasons why it is so difficult to attract top-notch professional athletes to go & play there. This is also one of the reasons why Montreal lost the Expos, that's another story. There's talk about the Rays possibly relocating to Mtl one day. I hopeful, but i don't buy it since there currently no local investors willing to take the risk. One question: will they be able to attract any top talent to play there considering the current tax situation? But again, that's another debate.

The political setting throughout Quebec is in chaos & reeks corruptness. An outsider almost has a feeling that organized crime runs Montreal & some of the other smaller cities. Protests & demonstrations are now a weekly thing in Montreal. And more frequent. The roads have been among the country's worst for as long as i can remember and there is no sign(s) it will ever get better. Every year, it seems that there are more & more homeless people walking the streets. Businesses are constantly closing down. More & more people are working at minimum wage. It's no wonder why the local sex trade attracts so many people to work in it. It's also no wonder that the sex trade (along with the various festivals) has been one of the main factors responsible for boosting local tourism.

Someone may ask: "Why is it that the sex trade is such in Montreal, and no other city in Canada or North America comes close to it?" Take a look at the economy, the job situation & other factors (e.g. organized crime, political instability, etc) and you'll be able to conclude why.

Go Ti-Jacques!!!

He should come back and be involved in our politics.... We need someone like this

He'd be too honest & wouldn't kiss anybody's ass. His name alone could get him elected, but he wouldn't last long in this field since it would drive him nuts! He'd be one of the most politcally incorrect politicians this country had ever seen, and he also would likely make many ennemies within his own party because he'd likely be unwilling to play the 'political game'.

On another note, i still remember the time he won the Indy 500. This was one of the most thrilling races i had ever watched! He came back from a lap down & won the race!! What a masterful race it was & it led to being hired by Williams Racing in F1.

Unless i'm mistaken, Scott Goodyear was his teammate at the Players' Racing Team.

I was at the last F-1 race when he ran out of fuel and got pissed when he got bumped ( right in front of my bleachers ). He has a temper but entertaining to watch. Hopefully this year some asshole does not throw something on the track ( put Denika? out ). Anyways yes, he does speak his mind.

Anyone know if old Jacques still involved at Newtowns on Crescent?

If I remember correctly he was one of the original owners and the inspiration for its name ("New town" = "Ville neuve").

Guess this latest stuff can't be great for business...though judging by its location Newtown must be an Anglo joint these days.....

Nope he is not ... was his wife that took care of that but I guess it probably wasn't really profitable...
Bâton Rouge restaurants bought it !!! (in french http://fr.canoe.ca/cgi-bin/imprimer.cgi?id=456303)
According wikipedia he sold it in 2009
Jacques owned a trendy nightclub and restaurant in Montreal called Newtown, which is the English translation of his French last name ('Ville' means 'Town', and 'Neuve' means 'new'). It is located on Crescent Street. He sold it in 2009.[SUP][9][/SUP]

For a guy like Jeter, his ball salary is only part of his income. By "residing" in Florida, he shields all of his investment income, sponsorship income and other non-salary income from NY state income tax..

Jeter does get a ton of sponsorship income, especially endorsing Ford cars:

I wonder whether he actually drives a Ford Explorer?
