Mayweather vs Pacquiao ... fight was 10 years too late

I didn't see the fight but from the description and news accounts, it wasn't much of a fight. Mayweather pretty much used his height advantage to stifle Pacquiao and Pacquiao never was able to sustain a long flurry of punches which he is so noted for doing.

So I sort of think that the fight was really 10 years overdue. It would have been a much livelier fight 10 years ago when Mayweather was 28 and Pacquiao was 26. Fans paid lots of $ to see 2 great fighters, but past their primes. Mayweather will get $180 million and Pacquiao $100 million. Yeah, they are laughing to the bank. I suppose Floyd will make a video of counting $10 million in cash in his bed next month.

Since Mayweather is 38 and Pacquiao is 36, if there is going to be a rematch it will have to be soon.

For you who saw the fight, what is your opinion? For you who did not, would you pay $ to see a rematch?

The purse was actually $180M and $120M, respectively, between Money and Manny, but what's another $20M to soon-to-be-braindead fighters?

It was a shitty fight. Mayweather was his usual technical self - clearly out-boxed Manny, but it was a boring-as-hell strategy. Welterweight / lightweight fights should feature flurries of punches and multiple exchanges of back-and-forth. Never happened last night. Manny got us excited in the 4th round (I think, or was it the 5th), but then Money took back control the very next round. Pacquiao was never able to establish sustained aggression, and never looked dangerous the rest of the fight.

Because of his defensive posture, Mayweather will never be looked upon in history as one of the greatest. He's a shrewd businessman, and technically outstanding, but an entertainer, he is not. Oh, and anyone who has Justin Bieber as part of his entourage should be mocked forever after. Mayweather has the Burger King King and Biebs behind him in the walk to the ring. Manny had an equally idiotic entourage with Jimmy Kimmel bobbing and weaving behind him in his walk. Ridiculous...

wat a let down

i seen it at a bar (cost me $40 in drinks and food) and coudnt hear all the color comentatary with all noise and reluctants of bar to raise volume mabe because broadcast was in english but i was rooting for manny.

i found mayweather did a lot of holding and clinching and the ref didnt do anything about it. to make fight more exciting should have penalize him a point early on to make him stop but referee is nown to favor mayweather (see http://www.cbssports.com/general/ey...la-hoya-kenny-bayless-favors-floyd-mayweather) not only was mayweather holding but he also headlock chock pacman a few times in the holding. wen maywather wasnt holding and clinching he was running.

both fighters barly had any bruises and blood on their face.

boring fight.

i was suprise that mayweather was so fast and think packman was aslo suprised.

mayweather had 2 advantages over packman. reach and size. both had the speed. packman had more power i think even tho part of fight wen packman hit mayweather few times and mayweather shook head like is that all you got? if mayweather got hit with same type of hit that mosley layd on him, he would have been a goner.

the cotto martinez fight was a good fight...

hope next superfight will be grate if stevenson isnt too chicken to fight the russian kovalev or if someone top like cotto isnt too chicken to fight tripel g golovkin.

if theirs a rematch betwen mayweather and packman, if i do see it live gain, it will be at a bar again but will not be a months plan event like it was for this fight but might be last minute week thing.

Investing money in a fight is the worst rip-off in sports. I wouldn't dream of going near it or watching it. Many years ago I was enthusiastic about the sport until it became a mess of competing phony organizations. The extremely questionable and sometimes downright nonsense/joke of refereeing and decisions was bad enough, but the worst thing about it is how often the fight was a total let down and/or a sudden ending. You pay a hundred dollars for what, big names well past their prime, a lot of waltzing, the possibility of a sudden end and the whole thing is not about earning your way to greatness it's about matching up "POP" figures who the public will pay the most money to see. I haven't been much interested since Leonard-Hagler.

Maybe 5 to 7 years ago this pairing would have been a great combination despite all of the problems with the "sport". No surprise the reports from viewers seem like they feel cheated...and the fighters walk away with at least $120 million for less than two hours.

pfffsssssst,

i woud not spend money at a gate for a fight. i woud never pay pay per vu for a fight either.

wen pay per vu ofen are over $50 per fight, i would feel like it was $50 down drain if i pad to see tyson-spinks. imagine $50 to see less then 3 minutes. i think back then it was $50 for pay per vu. even if i had to pay $50 (it was more) to see cotto and martinez wich is a fight i think was good, i still wouldnt.

much better to see fights either free or pay per vu events at a bar if the bar charges regular prices and dont have entrance/gate fee. my $40 at the bar would have cost me the same $40 any other night at the same bar and spendt time with friends at same time.

I saw both figures. $120 million and $100 million to Pacquiao. Either is a large chunk of change. Another couple fights with Mayweather and he could buy his home country of the Philippines outright.

I also saw a report that Pacquiao injured his right shoulder in training and was denied an anti-inflammatory shot before the fight by the Nevada Boxing Commission, which had verbally said he could earlier. Is this a seed being planted for a rematch?

I saw the fight via ppv and like all overhyped fights, it was somewhat of a letdown. But the fight had its moments.

Mayweather was on his bicycle all night long. Pacquiao tried to take the fight to him for pretty much the entire evening, but Mayweather kept retreating, playing rope-a-dope or clinching. The referee didn't appear to be on his game last night. He was constantly late intervening during Mayweather's constant clinching.

The crowd was overwhelmingly cheering for Pacquiao and would get excited every time he'd land punches or go on the attack, which may have contributed to Pacquiao thinking he had the fight won. But who knows what his manager was telling him. Maybe his manager felt the same way and told him to relax in the final two rounds or so. Most of the tv coverage between rounds occurred in Mayweather's corner where his trainer, his own father, kept admonsishing him and basically telling him he sucked.

For me, one of the best moments of the evening was seeing Jimmy Kimmel standing right behind Pacquiao during his entrance to the ring. Kimmel was part of his entourage, as he had begged him to on his tv show last week! Bieber was once again in Mayweather's entourage prior to the fight and i must admit that he hasn't looked better. He was in a nice suit and looked very classy. Kudos to the Biebs!

It's all a big show. Sports entertainment. No different than other sports such as hockey where the coaches overreact during their press conferences in order to fire up the troups and hopefully get a bit of controversy going in order to get the media pressure off the players. The players act like gladiators on the ice and hammer their opponents like arch-ennemies, only to kiss and make up once the series is over and praise one another. It's all a bit circus act, nothing more, nothing less. Why do you think they have Ginette Reno singing the national anthem? It's certainly not for her singing skills.....CHRIST SHE SUCKS!!!! They should get that bimbo that sang the national anthem earlier in the season....Briana Donolo.....the one who wound up on TMZ for her looks.

Pacquiao did admit after the fight that he had an injured shoulder & added that the Nevada Commisson refused to allow him to have an injection prior to the fight. Since it's clearly a health-related issue, i wouldn't have had a problem with it. But that's boxing for you.

I doubt we'll have a rematch. I can't see Pacquiao doing anything more than he did. The fight should have been held 5 years ago, but the revenue wouldn't have been as huge as last night. Mayweather's gamble seems to have paid off. I also believe there will not be a rematch since Mayweather has been firm in his statements that his next fight (in September) will be his last one and then he'll retire for good.

I forgot about the 'Burger King' guy. lol

I'll have to watch the pvr again to have a better look at what happened to him.

p.s. When i saw Pacquiao stop and take a selfie with Jimmy Kimmel, i told a friend of mine: "If Pacquiao isn't more focused than that, it doesn't look very good for him."

I saw the fight. Very surprised at PacMan's comments following the fight. He said "I thought I won the fight," was he actually in the same fight that everyone watched because, if so, there's no way he won that fight!! I also lost some respect for him for pulling out the injury excuse. If you're not 100% then postpone it but don't use f'n excuses.

Seriously?!?!? WTF? You just publicly gave props to 'The Biebs'?!? How fucked up is that? :p You can't be a sports-loving man and give props to Biebs at a FRICKIN' BOXING MATCH!!!! Any remnants of respect... out the window! :D ;)

PPV was $100 in the US. Makes no sense if by yourself, but it's a great excuse to catch up with friends. With food and drinks, it was a cheap $20 night. At least it went the full 12 rounds. I've paid for heavyweight bouts that ended in the 1st round.

Rematch in September. :D

Agreed with SK, it was pretty bush league of Pacquiao to bring up the injury after the fight. I'm sure Mayweather was a dick in the business deal, but still, no excuses once you get into the ring. Money, unfortunately, was clearly the better boxer.

I agree that people who can't afford to pay $100 for a PPV fight should not purchase it & instead should mooch on other people. Hey Wolfie, ever hang out at Cleo's?? They sell cheap beer there!

Love the Biebs! They should have got him to sing the national anthem instead of Jamie Foxx. He would have been 100 times better if you ask me! :thumb:

Doesn't Beibieboy being there save time looking for a little pussy after the fight. :D OH COME ON MERLOT!!! That's so catty and cheap. ;)

A lot of guys feel ripped off about this fight...on WEEI, people I spoke to. The basic complaint was the slowness and rarity of good action. Then there's the references to the "wife beater". According to several people a lot of what looked like good shots was exposed on replay as ducking and missing. Was it good counter-boxing? Sure. Still I wonder how much of it was connected to a guaranteed rematch. You are going to make at least $100 million for the fight, and next time who knows. Are you going to go out and give your all for what could be a real beating? Risk being seriously damaged? Risk the next mega payday and/or the health to enjoy it? There's far too much guaranteed money available for what the players know ahead regarding the typical promotional sequences of these fights when your names are big enough to be very profitable.

LOL... I guess I didn't make a clear statement, but it takes a complete CHEAPO to interpret what I wrote the way you did... Hahahaha... Wow, the thought didn't even occur to interpret the way you interpreted. :nono:

Nobody mooched. You get together 15 friends and order food for the group, and split the bill, $7 for the PPV and $13 for the food, it works out to be pretty cheap entertainment. No need to sit in a loud bar. Full volume to hear the fight commentary and good company. And if you're the host, you can safely pass out in your own bed.

LMAO. Sad... (And no, I think I've made clear in other threads what I think about Montreal SCs, especially Cleo's... I would expect it to be more your style. Or lack thereof...)

Guys,

It was a shitty fight. Mayweather was his usual technical self - clearly out-boxed Manny, but it was a boring-as-hell strategy.

I didn't know anything about how Mayweather fought. I've read a lot lately and you are right about his style. That's why I don't understand why any fan who has been following him can be disappointed. Fans of his knew who he is and what his fight would be like. Those fans who paid $100 for this "fight" got exactly what they had seen before...a boring strategy. Now there are tons of articles claiming the fight was a big waste of money. Again, why? Everyone got what they paid for. Mayweather being boring-as-hell Mayweather for $200 million.

Will he make $250 million from the same disappointed fans next time? I'd bet on it.

I don't think anyone roots for Mayweather. I'm not a huge boxing fan, so I'm sure there are fans of his technical abilities. But among my circle of casual boxing fans / hardcore sports fans, I have never met anyone who is a Mayweather fan, ever. The hate for Money Mayweather is unanimous. How can anyone be a fan of a despicable woman-beating human being like him? Everyone pays for that ever-so-slight but absolutely delicious possibility Mayweather's opponent sneaks through his defenses and knocks that stupid grin off his face. (The man can actually take a punch, too. Full props are due...) If and when someone finally does knock him out, $100 will be a price happily paid to see it live.
