Hello hockey fans.

I have been watching the Official NHL thread and as everyone has been posting in a respectful fashion, for the most part - lol, so I have decided to bring back the free for all thread as a Christmas present for all of you. Instead of re-opening the old thread I have decided to start fresh so that old fights can be forgotten and this thread can begin with a clean slate.

As before I am asking members to refrain from direct, over the top, personal attacks and insults, whether directed at other members or players. This thread is for heated discussions and other posts that are too hot for the Official thread but do not start making posts that will create bad blood that will carry over into other threads or discussions.

The usual disclaimer applies: If you have thin skin. do NOT post in this thread.

And IF or at ANY time you think your "rumple standings" mean anything, you will be your own TOP fan. :thumb: Tell me Oh master hockey mind, what will the "rumple standings" mean come April 7? (no rumps, thats not the day baseball season begins, it is the last day of the NHL season), and "rumple standings" mean nothing then just as they do now, but you provide us all with a good laugh at your silliness, as always.

PS. Thanks Mod8 for opening the thread again, i think debating the "rumple standings" is better off here than in the "Official" thread. Merry Christmas!

Defacto - Smacto bwhahahahaahahahahaahahahahaahahaha!

Here's the latest. I've included the top 12 teams, just to give an indication of just how close it is between number 6 and 11. IfInumber 11, Ottawa, had played one fewer game or had one more point, they'd be in 8th place, just behind the sinking Maple Leafs. Anyof these teams could easily be in 6th or 11th place this time next week.

Actually, Mr. Genius, the Defacto standings take into account the number of games played and adjust the standings to reflect the number of points a team earns per game played. As of April 7, every team will have played the same number of games and the Defacto standings will be meaningless. Duh.

Actually, a decent signing, but where is the money gonna be for price and subban, AND signing key free agents next summer to actually compete next season?
Maybe by placing a large bet on the Maple Leafs to miss the playoffs.

They are meaningless and I will take Bettmans (look it up, rump) league rules over "rumps rules" any day, week, month, year, leap year, and even any day ending in a Y. Defact-O Smact-O, Rump-O.
Not to those with the "tools" to understand them.

Yeah I'm laughing too, he just doesn't understand it. Not everyone went to university.

This made my day! He obivously didn't understand the system otherwise he wouldnt have asked what the system would mean on April 7thlol. GOLD RUMPLE! You are wasting your time arguing with someone who isn't very mentally equipped.

The defacto standings adjust for the discrepancy in number of games played by each team. On april 7, this discrepancy will no longer exist since every team would have played the same number of games. So what is a more accurate representation of what the standings will be like on April 7th, a system that makes adjustments and takes into account the different number of games played or a system that shows us standings based on different number of games played? It's like adjusting entries in the accounting industry, where companies have to make adjustments to expenses, sales, amortization, IPO, shareholder's equity, litigations, interest rates, debt, inflation, etc on their financial statements even though none of these events have even taken place yet BUT are highly likely to take place in the future. The reason they do this is so that when the shareholders and the public view these financial statements and decide to invest in the company, they will not be misled by dramatic changes in the near future that can have a material effect on the company's bottom line. In other words, by making adjustments, the financial statements are a more faithful representation of the company's actual financial position is. Some companies will even show a specific lawsuit on their their expense account, they will immediately expense it, since the odds of them losing that lawsuit are high in the near future. By doing this, investors will not be fooled if a lawsuit loss takes place in the future! So don't invest in the NHL's standings, they are not a faithful representation of the future. Invest in Rumple's defacto standings, so you can make a good return on your future bets lol. Like Rumple said, Duh!

Decent signing? They're giving this bum nearly $4 million per season for the next 6 years!!!! Josh Gorges is NOT a $4 million per year defenceman! The Ghost has not learned from his mistakes!!!

And you're quite correct, once again (9 times out of 10, you're always right when it comes to hockey)....where will The Ghost find money to sign both Carey & P.K.? Ooops!! I should correct myself & say instead "where will Mr. Patrick Roy find money to sign those two players?"

Hello Lovemaker,

A university education...what for? No one needs anything but logic to see that Rumples' "De facto Standings" are simply a tool to adjust any imbalanced of games played for comparisons. No one needs anything but observation to see Rumples system predicted the Leafs would SINK... and so they have. Viola!!! DS is valid. End of story. It's a simple trend indication system. There's no sense for anyone to get emotional about it because one doesn't like it's truth.

It's too bad hockey snobbery from Toronto has to make this simple point an issue. Pffffsssst. But then constantly losing gives so little joy that they must be compensated elsewhere.

Cheers,

Merlot

Look who's talking about not getting emotional & people who don't like the truth! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. I'm always amazed at how cocky new hockey fans are when they've just begun to watch hockey since their local team started playing well. LOL!!!

Cmon Doc, they are paying Gill 2.5 or something a year so Georges is worth 3.9... ok maybe the term is 2 years to long but he would likely not sign for less than 5 or 6 yrs and would of walked and they had no one else as good so there you have it. The habs are screwed to sign both price and suban and STILL be able to make their team better with free agents, unless they trade someone if thats even possible, or bury gomez in hamilton, not likely tho, and it is sooooooooooooooooooo nice to see!

Poor Geoff Molson! He's already stuck paying Jacques Martin, Guy Carbonneau & Claude Julien....poor sap just gave Martin $3 million to stay home. I doubt he'll put up with paying Scotty Gomez $5.5 million to play for the Bulldogs! LOL!!!!

So i agreed.... hey, he is trying, thats all we can ask, right?

I didn't mention names. However, to be fair to Merlot, he did tell me the other day over a round of drinks at Cleo's that he thought Don Cherry was still the Bruins coach & that Harry Sinden was the GM. So i guess he might have been a fan of the Bruins back in the 70's & then stopped watching hockey (like a friend of ours, remember?) until the Bruins made the playoffs. Mister 69, i think we should help fellow Merbites understand the great game of hockey & not ridicule them for their lack of knowledge. Oui, oui?

Wow, i am impressed. You went to Cleos? Last time i mentioned that you said "that dump, screw that!" Ok, Merlot, no matter when you started to post about your team, even tho they were winning, it is never a bad time to become a fan of the great game this thread is based on, good stuff and keep learning, you will love it the more you watch and grow as a fan :thumb:

Watching you post in Hockey threads reminds me of this "rumps"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpFjDJEEy_g

Btw, "rumps", who is your favorite NHL team? And no the Providence Bruins are not a NHL team, neither are the Burlington Bears, the Maine Moose or the New Hampshire Ice Caps.

Truth of the matter is, with the Leafs being within a couple points of the playoffs on this date, they are right where many thought they would be and they have actually surpassed many other so called "experts" predictions. They are well known for very strong second halfs which if that holds true this season, they will make the playoffs which is the goal this season. They have come a long long way since Brain, i mean Brian Burke arrived and are young and hungry.

It was pointed out earlier in the season, when the Leafs still had their fans fooled into thinking that they might be a playoff team, that their negative goals for/goals against was a clear sign of a mirage. Now 38 games into the season, the Leafs have won 18 games and lost 20, their GF/GA ratio is 118/125. What goes around, comes around. (I should add that their record now is still probably just a bit better than it should be.)
