A friend who knows I visit Montreal (but doesn't know why) told me he is taking a GF on a romantic weekend and asked for hotel recommendations...nice and romantic without being absurdly expensive. Any ideas? I mean, I told him the Vogue, but surely there are more romantic places.

Le Nelligan, Le Place d'Armes Hotel & Suites in Old Montreal (both offer suites with jacuzzi tubs. L'Hôtel Le Crystal Montréal in the downtown area and offers fantastic views and lovely accommodations. Depending on the weekend dates you can usually book at reduced rates. Lately all have been rather "proud" of their rooms, but tourist season is winding down and deals are more prevalent as we enter winter. There are a few others I am aware of in Old Montreal...but cannot offer first hand knowledge of the properties.

Have fun,

Jman

I've stayed at Hotel St-Sulpice many times & it's similar to the hotels mentionned above. It's also located in Old Mtl, very close to Hotel Nelligan. The rooms are suites (and junior suites) and have a fireplace in the rooms. I've always had a separate bedroom when i stayed there. One thing about staying in Old Mtl during the colder months is that i've found it fairly deserted. Which is the main reason why i'd rather stay downtown from now on when i travel during the fall-winter months.

Thanks, Doc. I know some people might find this an odd question, but I think of a romantic location and a "pooning" location as two different things.

I find the Hotel St Sulpice to be one of the best hotels I've every stayed in while in montreal.

I don't consider it a "pooning" hotel.

Last time I checked in was one of the top 10 hotels in Montreal on tripadvisor. The fireplace in the suites are electric, and the location is on the same block as Notre Dame Cathedral.

BUT I think they had to relocate their Gym and Sauna, as they were located in the building next door which was sold earlier this year. When I was last there this summer (2010) they offered the use of a Guy a few blocks away. Not sure if that has since changed.

Parking is a bit expensive if you use the hotel's valet but you can also park down by the water area where the old docks are, where those museums are for pretty cheap and it's only about 3 block walk from the hotel.

It's also pretty close to Palace de Congress, and Chinatown.

Thanks so much for all the input on what I feared would be derided as a stupid question. He wound up going with L'Place.
