Sunday, I was downtown and realised that I had lost yet another poppy from my jacket. As I was putting my donation in the collection can for another one, I was verbally accosted by some stupid jerk off, cock sucking motherfucker telling me that what I was doing was supporting the murder of innocent civillians in an unjust war. I told him that I was showing respect for the men and women who risked their lives so that he could have the freedom to be the fucking idiot he is.

I have never been as completely outraged and close to beating a complete stranger as right then. The crowded sidewalk made me think otherwise though.

My request is this: If you have this same experience, please have the courage that I didn't...and beat the living shit out of this douchebag!

He has the right to express his opinion in a public venue.

You have the right to out-shout him, or ignore him.

Whoever brings up violence first, is the lesser man.

mtwallet, what you did was perfect. There's no reason for violence and it really wouldn't make any difference in that guy's way of thinking. Some people are just idiots and can't be helped. It isn't our fault if the guy is so ignorant that has no idea of the significance of the poppy.

Hello MT,

Lack of control over violence is the stuff of children and animals. Adoration of violence is the shame of thugs. Have pride in yourself that you did not behave like any of these. All that guy did was embarrass himself with ignorance and arrogance.

Cheers,

Merlot

Thank you for the kind words. While I know you are right that violence would get me nowhere, I just can't help but get very angry at the ingrates in this world. I myself have never served in the military, but my grandfathers and great grandfathers all served in WW2 and WW1, and that is something I am proud of them for. One of my grandfathers lost his fingers on one hand during the war, and had an extremely hard time finding work when he came home, since he was a machinist. He did find work though, and managed to raise a family. That's why when I hear some (probably) silver spoon fed, know-nothing kid spewing garbage, I get pissed. I'll quit typing before I work myself up. Again.

What don't you believe Mike?

violence the stuff of children and animals can sometimes feel good like frequenting sp's can

there is still place in society for a good knock to the head

but in this situation ignorance is lack of education [not his fault}

he is angry because he beleives people are paying respect and support to war itself

his intentions are good

for this reason violence would be very unjustified in this situation

consider the fact violence is what he is protesting

Bombing the crap out of goatherders in mesopotamia is not making this place safer, they're there for safegarding U.S. economic interests. No poppy for me thanks

The money from poppy sales doesn't go to the military establishment to fund war. Besides helping veterans, the funds go to medical research, scholarships, athletics, the Scouts, etc.

Many of veterans who need help were injured in United Nations peacekeeping roles and rescue missions. Some who didn't fought in "good" wars, such as WWII and the Korean. Even if you don't approve of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan, I don't see why one would want to withhold aid from some kid who signed up for the Canadian army with its reputation for peacekeeping and rescue operations and got shipped to Afghanistan.

Re "Mesopotamia", Canada refrained from participation in the Iraqi war.

anon_vlad, don't bother trying to explain to some people. They just have no idea of the concept of thanking those who are responsible for them having the freedom to be ungrateful and selfish. :(

Servicemen (generically speaking) of all nations who venture to war torn areas on peacekeeping missions generally should expect our support and appreciation of their efforts.
